Woken with horrendous vertigo

Typing this on my phone in bed, woken up this morning with the most horrendous vertigo. I can't move without feeling like I'm going to vomit.

Have had to crawl on my hands and knees to get to the toilet just so I could change my tampon . Now back in bed trying my hardest not to move but feeling so sick .

My sisters are up for the wknd so they are taking ds out for the day and dh is off to the chemist to see if he can get something over the counter for the sickness. Can anyone recommend anything?

There is no way I'm going to be able to get to the walk in centre today.

Have suffered periods of mild vertigo in the past but nothing like this.

labyrinthitis? Sorry - I don't know, but that's one option.

You should ring the OOH and ask their advice - they might be able to prescribe you something.

You should feel less horrible as long as you don't change position or move your head to much.
Contact OOH, they can see you at home if you are unable to get up safely.

My huge sympathies. I have had this and it is awful. DH called doctor out to me onone occasion (he was at work and I was with the children) and the doctor gave me some antisickness pills. They didnt help very much.

If, as it sounds, this is labyrinthitis, its likely that this terrible nausea and vertigo will subside within a couple of hours. Just stay as still as you possibly can meanwhile. It is so horrible that I think you should feel willing to call on all the help that you need, inluding NHS direct if you are worried

Btw ask chemist for prochlorperazine - I think that is stemetil? I had it when I was pg. You can take it as a suppository (nice)

I've had this & couldn't get out of bed for a week.

Get your GP to come round & give you a prescription ASAP.

I was given prochlorperazine and it was brilliant!

It may well take you a while to get steady on your feet again but you'll feel so much more able to cope when the nausea subsides.

Thank you. I'm finding keeping still is helping. If I turn my head slightly I feel a whole lot worse. It's the most debilitating thing, bloody awful. Really hope it doesn't last too long I've got tons to do .

Forget about doing anything - just concentrate on getting better.

Lie still and try to focus your eyes, if you can.

Breathe.

Relax as much as possible.

I had this a few months ago, have you had a cold recently? It could be your inner ear causing it.
Look up 'epley manoeuvre' on YouTube, that fixed me almost instantly, although I almost vomited doing it!

Oh I'm so glad there is an effective drug, Catelyn. I'm going to try and get some to have it ready in the house in case this happens to me again.

Ds is being lovely, he's just recovered from a 24 hr bug so at least he's well, now it's my turn.

No I've not had a cold. Was perfectly fine when I went to bed last night although I've had this before but never so bad as I felt like throwing up.

Dh has just gone to speak to the pharmacist.

Just looked at epley manoeuvre , not sure I could attempt that at the minute but interesting. I def think its my ears. It's a lot worse if I turn over onto my left side.

Best thing is to sleep it off. Good you have your sisters & dh at home to sort everything out.

Epley Manoeuvre is good for Benign Positional Vertigo - seeing that you woke up with this problem only time will tell whether it's acute labyrinthitis which will settle with time or BPV.

Pharmacist has given dh Buccastem which is anti sickness tablets apparently. Have to stick one to my gum and let it dissolve over an hour or two. Said it sounds like labyrinthitis.

I get this, take sudafed, feel better within hours. Is inner ear blocked with me, bit like glue ear apparently. Can get it after a cold or sometimes with no warning whatsoever.

Buccastem = Stemetil
It's a tablet you let dissolve between your cheek and you gums IYKWIM - it works really well because it does not have to go in to your upset stomach.

I am wondering if the virus ds had two days ago has triggered this off. He slept with me for two nights.

You poor, poor thing. I had this last year, someone called an ambulance as I was taken ill so suddenly, lurching about and so dizzy and sick I couldn't stand up. Thought I'd had a stroke. Labyrinthitis diagnosed. Prescribed Buccastem and Stemetil which may have helped a little but to be honest the only things that really worked were resting it out (for quite a few days.) Completely disabling while it was at its worst.

I had to crawl to the loo on hands and knees too. I kept a walking stick by the bed to lean on and take little steps when I was recovering, this helped.

It was one of the most horrible and incapacitating things I've ever had. It did return, I'm afraid, diminishing in ferocity, twice before September last year, but since then I haven't had it again.

Wishing you all the best. Honestly nothing much you can do but lie still and try not to bring on the worst nausea and spinning with sudden head movements.

oh really feel for you op, I had this last year, on the morning we were due to go on holiday!!!

I've learned not to turn to my left in bed as this triggers it off, although when you wake up with it nothing helps but trying to do nothing all day

hope it eases soon, I got stemital from out of hours gp, didnt help too much I feel , wonder if prochlorperazine is better?
