Have to have a scan on my leg tomorrow for ?deep vein thrombosis :-(

I've had a pain in my right calf muscle for nearly two weeks now. I went to the GP a week and a half ago and he told me that as it had only been a few days to go home and take Ibuprofen and paracetamol. If these didn't help I was to go back and see him.
I went back to the GP this afternoon as the pain was still there. They ended up sending me to the local hospital to the DVT (deep vein thrombosis) clinic as a precaution.
I had to have a blood test taken (this was at 4.30pm) and was told to go back at 6pm for the results. They thought it was unlikely that it would be a clot as I didn't have any other symptoms.
Went back at 6pm and was told that the results were slightly abnormal and that they would like to do a scan tomorrow (if an appointment is available). I had to have an injection in my stomach to stop my blood clotting. They are going to phone me tomorrow to let me know if there is a scan appointment available. If there isn't then I will have to go back in tomorrow for another injection in my stomach in the hope that they will get me in for a scan on Friday.
I am so worried. I can't believe all this has happened so quickly today.
It's been a bad, bad day today. DD1 was off school having been sick three times this morning. Washing machine packed up. I have a swollen left eye due to a sty which doctor has given me eye drops for. [sad}
Sat here munching on a box of roses which I bought myself for being brave with the injection.

Dh keeps telling me everything is going to be ok, he's normally right.
It was just a huge shock that I need a scan. I really thought they would tell me the blood test was normal and that I could go home and it would all be sorted.

hope you get the scan done tomorrow and all is ok.... fingers crossed and enjoy the choccies!

sparkler1 · 12/07/2006 21:16

I hope so JF. I'm feeling so tearful this evening.

sparkler1 -what a crappy day !
They are probably just doing a scan to cover all bases so to speak, and even if they did find something then they can treat it .
Please try not to worry (i know it is easy to say)
Get stuck into those roses and cuddle up to your dh
just make sure he doesn't pinch any

sparkler1 · 12/07/2006 21:20

too late he's already had some. I've eaten far too many, feel sick now.

Oh Sparkler - sorry to hear this and really for you today having to have that injection - as you say it's all happened a bit quick. But I'm sure the scan is just to be 100% that all is OK. Can DH or someone go with you tomorrow? Let us know how you get on and try not to worry ( hard I know!!). When all sorted I think this warrants a big drinkup don't you?!!!!

Chully · 12/07/2006 21:31

I had DVT (several hundred clots rather than just the 1) when I was 23, so I know how scared you must be.

On the bright side, things have vastly improved since then - the scan is really easy and painless, and in the unlikely event that you do have a clot, they tend to send you home nowadays and just treat it with either the kind of Heparin injection you've been having, or Warfarin tablets.

Good luck - I'll be thinking of you!

Miaou · 12/07/2006 21:32

oh sparkler, poor you! Any one of those would have made for a crappy day on its own!

All the best for your scan, like pelvicfloor says, they like to cover all bases.

sparkler1 · 12/07/2006 21:35

Thanks guys. Guess it's one of those things you expect to happen to old people isn't it?

OP posts:
LittleMerlin · 12/07/2006 21:38

Well, the bonus is Sparkler that you get all these things out of the way now and then you can get old disgracefully - Bumbles anyone?!

Miaou · 12/07/2006 21:38

Hmm, I think spacecadet has had dvt. Don't think she'd like to be called old, though

my hubby had something simular recently.. it turned out he had injured the knee and the calf muscle had popped out of the sack!... he had to wear a tuby-grip bandage on it and it went yellow where the bruising was coming out....it was also really swollen... the whole leg and foot.....
I think what I'm trying to say is have you injured it lately

bubblerock · 12/07/2006 21:55

Are you prepared incase you do have to stay in? My Mum went to her GP with a pain in her calf and because she had been on a flight she was sent immediately to A&E with a letter and they wouldn't let her go home!! She rang me and I had to go and collect her car and take all her nightclothes etc.. in for her - she was in for over a week on a ward with lots of old ladies!

Anyway - I hope it turns out to be nothing, good luck tomorrow!

sparkler1 · 13/07/2006 07:23

MumRum - that's the silly thing about it. I can't think of anything that I've done to set it off. I was out for the day walking around and that was it - pain.
My eye is all up and swollen this morning too - looks like I've been in a boxing ring.
Bubblerock - thanks for the warning!
Didn't have a very good night's sleep thinking about it all. I keep telling myself it's nothing but I can help think what ifs.

Chully · 13/07/2006 07:33

I never did anything to 'set it off' either when I had DVT. (I used to run 5 miles a night, so was fit and healthy.)

The scan/DVT places are pretty good, so you'll be in safe hands!

Good luck!

sparkler1 · 13/07/2006 07:35

Thanks Chully - You have a similar name to another mumsnetter BTW . I keep thinking you are her!

OP posts:
Chully · 13/07/2006 07:37

I don't post often, so I haven't come across her..

What's the issue with your eye today, then? That doesn't sound right - did you bump it?

Chully · 13/07/2006 08:10

Sorry - I'm a bit slow! Just spotted the sty comment... that's not what you need right now!

sparkler1 · 13/07/2006 08:19

DH has just gone off to work, a little earlier than usual. Kissed me on the forehead and said let me know how you get on.
Maybe it's just because I'm feeling sensitive right now, but I am feeling very that he didn't even offer to come with me for support. Not that there's much he can do but to be asked would have been nice.

OP posts:
Chully · 13/07/2006 08:22

I'd have been annoyed too! I suspect he has no real idea that this could be quite serious (although hopefully it won't be).

But some moral support or, as you say, at least an offer to go with you would have been nice!

Men!

BettySpaghetti · 13/07/2006 08:32

Fingers crossed for you today sparkler1

Miaou · 13/07/2006 09:21

chjlly · 13/07/2006 09:33
