TMI? Menstrual blood from clitoris??

Hi all,

when I have my period, blood also flows from my clitoris - is this normal? It's been happening for years now, and I thought it was normal, but am realising that maybe it's not, and maybe my plumbing is out of whack... :-( Anybody else have the same, or am I the only one???

I have to honest, that does not sound normal!! How do you know it's coming from your clitoris? Are you absolutely sure it's not "overflow" from your vagina making its way up there?

You've got blood coming out of your urethra? Definitely not normal. Go and see a doctor today.

Are you sure? If so it's definitely not normal and I would get to a GP ASAP.

The urethra is below the clitoris and just above the vaginal opening.
Human females do not urinate through their clitoris - some animals do eg the Hyena as females have a long 'appendage' like the males.

Period blood can only flow from your womb through your vagina

The only way I can see why this would happen is if you have endometriosis and have growth in your bladder. I'd advise seeing a GP ASAP

Are you sure it is flowing from there? I suffer with flooding so I can't identity where it is coming from as there is so much.

Either way a think a trip to the doctors is necessary.

It does sound like you need to see a Dr as bleeding from there is not normal.

It's not normal, do see a doctor. Just to give a possible harmless explanation, I was convinced I was bleeding from my urethra after birth but it was just the vaginal blood mixing with a little leaked wee and making it seem as if there was blood coming from the urethra. Could it be something like that?

The urethra is so near the vaginal opening it is impossible to know.

I had that smearing on HRT and to be sure I would put a mini lillet in vagina and a thin panty liner. It was always coming from the vagina as on the tampon but nothing on the liner.

Can't do that method when having a proper period though.

Hi again, sorry for not getting back earlier... No, it's DEFINITELY from clitoris. On pad, there are two distinct different spots of blood, one bigger than the other. The one at the bottom is obviously normal period. But the one at the top is definitely from clitoris/clitoral area... I know this may be TMI, but sometimes I can feel the blood almost spurting out of there... :-( It's looking like I might have to go see doc...

It's highly unlikely.....

The clitoris' roots go deep into the vaginal wall so you'd need to have a real 'plumbing leak' for it to be coming from there. Have you had children? Some poor women who have, have fistulas- that is a hole between the bladder or rectum wall and the vagina, meaning that the contents of those come out through the vagina- this happens in many 3rd world countries where women have long labours and the babies get stuck, and tissue dies.

So- if you have any chance of something like that then it's possible.

Otherwise, then how do you know it's just not blood 'migrating' along the towel?

The way to check is to use a tampon, wash yourself after inserting, and see if any blood appears ( that's not leakage from the tampon).

Could be a blood vessel or something maybe.. Do you have any lumps/bumps? I have numerous cysts in that area that have leaked before, perhaps its a cyst that's bleeding or something? Is the skin quite healthy/normal, hood not too tight - thinking maybe friction or cracked skin?

Hopefully the GP will be able to.assist.. I remember a nightmare of a weekend once when white fluid started leaking out from behind mine, that was simply put down to an open gland or something :s

It's more likely that the blood is somehow being squashed upwards along your labia as you sit or walk, making it look like the blood is flowing from that area. That happens to me sometimes, and tbh I've never questioned it.

When I wear towels that happens to me. nocarsgo has explained it well. You can't bleed from your clitoris surely? It's just a bundle of nerves isn't it??

I suspect you are not beeping from two places (and clitoris is not a hole, so you cannot bleed from there)

I think what is happening, as it happens to me, when the labia are shut (ie always unless legs wide open!) there can be a little tunnel formed where the blood can travel up towards top of vulva and out (ie just at the top - where the labia start). This looks like a second bleeding spot, but isn't.

If you definitely think this isn't the case (ie you can physically see blood coming from elsewhere when you look (ie not just from spotting on your pad) then go to see your GP.

The clitoris has 'roots' that go into the vagina- what you see on the surface ( the little 'pea') is like the tip of the iceberg. As I posted earlier, if the OP had some damage caused by childbirth then it's just possible there could be a tiny hole.

I take your point, but if the OP had enough damage to cause menstrual blood to come out of the clitoris, that would not be the only symptom. She would have a whole raft of other problems too.

It's far more likely that the blood is being channelled forward and out of the labia at the front, which is totally normal, and yes you can feel it happening sometimes.

Yes agree - the is entirely normal if the labia minora stick together and channel it out the front. It used to happen to me, stopped after childbirth, and happens again now that I have had my perineum rebuilt. Gynae says I have perfectly normal genitalia ( not that I asked).

The clitoris has no hole for anything to leak out of.

Are you able to wear a tampon or mooncup to test whether there is any flow onto a pad if you have something preventing flow from your vagina?
