How normal is this? He's crying saying it hurts and to be fair does look red. It's been hurting over the last day but has obvs got worse, do you think it can wait til the morning?

Will he drink water? I mean - lots of? And give him some Calpol - then take him to the doctor's tomorrow? Obviously if he's in agony then take him now. Ds1 gets a sore willy sometimes and nothing has ever shown up in urine tests - drinking lots of water seems to help though.

HappyMumof2 · 12/04/2006 20:55

sounds like balanitis (sp?) ds has had this a couple of times. Will need antibiotics but maybe just given him some Calpol/Nurofen tonight and see how he goes?
Is it swollen?

dinny · 12/04/2006 20:55

sounds like it could be balanitis, Essbee. don't think it's an emergency but not sure...if he's upset then maybe it is worth going now?

essbee · 12/04/2006 20:59

I've not really looked at it properly for yonks but he says it's swollen (well he said bigger but ykwim).

I've been getting him to drink loads of water all day. I'm ummoing and ahing to do something now or not. I will certainly take him tomorrow if not doing someting sooner.

maybe thrush.. ds had this. he dropped his trews and said his winky hurt in the dr's before she'd even asked to see it...was red and sore at the end

gingernut · 12/04/2006 21:01

Yep, sounds like it might be balanitis. You need to go to the docs either tomorrow or if very bad tonight. You could try an antibacterial cream in the meantime (e.g. savlon) and antifungal too (e.g. canesten) because it can be fungal (more commonly bacterial though). And I'd give him some painkiller. (and, whispers, if you have some Fucidin around the place, you coud try that. Plain Fucidin, mind, not FucidinH or FuciBET).

HappyMumof2 · 12/04/2006 21:02

sounds more like balanitis than urine infection. Does it sting when he wees?

ds had a urine infection a few weeks ago and his penis did look swollen and red but it was the stinging more than anything that bothered him.

With balanitis it looks like a permanent erection Blush and is painful

AllieBongo · 12/04/2006 21:05

"penis" a foul word

essbee · 12/04/2006 21:06

Yes it stings when he wees and it's the stinging that bothers him (is stinging all the time though). I think I might hsve to go tonight, he says it hurts to sit down. I really want to avoid it though as I'd have to take my dd too (is in bed). There's an nhs walk in open about 15/20 mins drive away

essbee · 12/04/2006 21:07

Oh and I have got savlon and fuciden!

dinny · 12/04/2006 21:08

any hope in hell of getting a home visit from GP?

dinny · 12/04/2006 21:08

er, no!

Essbee, where do you live now? hope ds better soon with antibiotics, poor thing.

essbee · 12/04/2006 21:09

No idea! Never tried from here! If the consensus is to leave it i'll go with that. Go on then, what would you do?

OP posts:
essbee · 12/04/2006 21:10

I'm on the outskirts of Exeter.

OP posts:
dinny · 12/04/2006 21:11

has he got a temperature? if Calpol helped with the pian and he didn't have a temp, I'd probably leave it till morning (but only because of having to take your dd)

gingernut · 12/04/2006 21:11

I found these factsheets which may be useful: \link{http://www.patient.co.uk/showdoc/27000277/\balanitis} and \link{http://www.patient.co.uk/showdoc/23069176/\urine infection in men}.

HappyMumof2 · 12/04/2006 21:12

err, sorry AllieBongo - just thought I'd use the correct term Wink

Janh · 12/04/2006 21:15

penis a foul word?????? Shock

essbee, does he retract the foreskin and wash it thoroughly when he's in the bath? I'm sure this used to happen to DS2 and a bit of strenuous hygiene usually sorted it out (tricky when it's sore of course). Would he get in the bath now and let you bathe it and have a good look?

essbee · 12/04/2006 21:16

No temp.

Thanks for the factsheets, out the 2 looks more like balanitus but I'm obvs not a gp! Grin

OP posts:
essbee · 12/04/2006 21:19

He's just had a bath and as one most nights, yes he does pull it back but i'm obvs not an expert whether it's being done properly. He couldn't pull it back in the bath tonight as he said it was stuck, I suspect mo9re sore than stuck.

essbee · 12/04/2006 21:23

ouch! so do you think it's alright to leave til tomorrow? I know he's not going to die or anything but I don't want him to be in agony either!
