Weight Loss - January

There are so many of us doing the above, and on quite a few boards; Atkins, Weight loss tablets etc. Thought it would make things easier to find and follow if we started on this? ....

I started yesterday, to try and lose my 'Christmas Chocolate'; probably half a stone, just using advice and memories from previous Weight Watchers.

Had a terrible headache by the time I went to bed, distinct lack of chocolate and sugar!! Every time I had food cravings, I drank a glass of water which seemed to help, plus its good to drink 2 litres a day, so I'm doing something good.

I started the day at supermarket getting all fresh veg, fruit and chicken. And the January edition of WW magazine, read all the inspiring stories of women shifting 4 stone, great stuff.

Chicken stir fry tonight. And last night I didnt pick at childrens supper either during cooking or after they'd 'eaten' it!! That is a major breakthrough! Weight loss is all down to breaking bad habits.

Oh, and Ive also been writing everything down that I eat, which makes you think about it a bit more.

Went off Boots detox idea after hearing of Alibubbles greenpoo, there been enough of that in this house!!

robinw - why not give Atkins ago? I'm finding it really quite easy, despite it feeling a bit strange to be eating so little carbs, but I'm not really missing them as I can pick at cheese freely, which I love. Also, I'm steadily losing weight, without really trying. Will do a weight loss update on Monday because by then I will have been on it for one week.

wendym · 11/01/2002 11:00

Thanks Chanelno5 - I'm definitely going to get some today and will let you know how I get on. have you tried yours yet?

ChanelNo5 · 11/01/2002 13:05

wendym - Yes I have, and am pleased to report that they showed just over a moderate amount of ketones, so I must be doing something right!

ChanelNo5 · 11/01/2002 13:12

Pamina matey - you've been a bit quiet on this thread lately, not sneaked off to a private clinic for a bit of liposuction have you?

Well I did it! I bought the strips, did the tests and values varied between 1.5 and 8. Although you're told not to test too often I felt I needed to do several. Unfortunately today I felt really terrible after breakfast. I was dizzy to the point where I had to sit down. Since I've only lost a few pounds and am not happy swallowing pills by what feels like a bucketload I may not stay with this very long.

Crunchie · 14/01/2002 11:41

I'm around too, I've just had problems accessing a PC. I hope everyone is feeling positive today, for most it's week 2. Wendy I hope you're OK The first couple of weeks on Atkins are really really hard, I couldn't do it!

I'm now about 3lbs over my target weight again, but I'm going to class today to make sure I stay on the straight and narrow.

wendym · 14/01/2002 13:45

Thanks crunchie - I feel more or less normal again after eating a small quantity of dried fruit. Decided I had reactive hypoglycaemia and I had to fall off the diet. Hadn't taken the chromium today and apparently that's the worst thing I could have done. May also up my carbohydrate level prematurely and have something at bedtime.

Willow2 · 14/01/2002 15:02

Wondered where all you lot had got to... so now repeating my message from the old thread. Anyway, bit the bullet before Christmas and re-registered - only to find I had put on nearly half a stone. Aaargh. Good news is first New Year weigh in was tuesday and have lost 2 1/2 lbs - which, bearing in mind how much chocolate I've scoffed in the past few weeks, I am dead chuffed about. (Why do people buy toddlers selection packs of chocolate for Christmas? Don't they know he isn't old enough for Mars bars and that I will have to do the decent thing and eat them on my son's behalf?) Am now back on the plan and have eaten my weight in greenery this week.

wendym · 15/01/2002 10:27

come in Chanelno5, I need some encouragement. definitely in ketosis still but not losing any weight. Thanks for the tip about the jelly - I'd been eating it at home but hadn't thought of taking it out.

Crunchie · 15/01/2002 11:51

Sorry this isn't going to help anyone, but it's funny!Chocolate is a vegetable...

Chocolate is a Vegetable:
Chocolate is derived from cocoa beans.
Bean = vegetable.
Sugar is derived from either sugar CANE or sugar BEETS.
Both are plants, which places them in the vegetable category.
Thus, chocolate is a vegetable.

To go one step further, chocolate candy bars also contain milk, which is
dairy.
So chocolate bars are a health food.

Chocolate-covered raisins, cherries, orange slices and strawberries all
count as fruit, so eat as many as you want.

If you've got melted chocolate all over your hands, you're eating it too
slowly.

The problem: How to get 2 pounds of chocolate home from the shop in a
hot car.
The solution: Eat it in the parking lot.

Diet tip: Eat a chocolate bar before each meal. It'll take the edge off
your appetite, and you'll eat less.

Chocolate has many preservatives. Preservatives make you look younger.

A nice box of chocolates can provide your total daily intake of calories
in one place. Now, isn't that handy?

If not for chocolate, there would be no need for control top tights.
An entire garment industry would be devastated. You can't let that
happen, can you?

REMEMBER: "Stressed" spelled backward is "desserts"

Wendym, I have a funny feeling you are doing the big diet no-no, getting on the scales everyday! I know we all do this, but you cannot really tell if you are losing weight. If you can put those scales away for one week (or get your partner to hide them so you don't know where they are) because if you are being a slave to those scales your daily/hourly mood will be dictated by a lump of metal in your bathroom. If you are doig the Atkins diet properly you will be losing weight, however we all know that the irst week or two's weight loss is mainly water, after that its real fat (well that's the weigh I look at it!). As my SW consultant said last night, 1lb is 8 sausages! It sounds better that way. She also last year brought in 1lb of fat to show us. Not nicely packaged lard, but fat from the butchers, it was really gross and certainly inspired me. Perhaps you could do this. Find a local butcher who will cut 1lb of fat off a huge animal carcass, you will be amazed at how much there is!

Good luck and take one day at a time, since you started you have lost a few lbs you said, well that's great. Just think in about 3 weeks you will have lost at least 1/2 stone!

Unfortunately crunchie I started restricting carbohydrates 3 weeks ago and I haven't lost half a stone. As a PCOS sufferer I had to reduce it in stages so I'm now on week 2 of Atkins induction. Apart from the dried pear yesterday I've been pretty good (didn't have extra carb last night) but the only weight loss was the first week. If I'm only going to lose a pound a week I may as well go on a healthier type of diet and drop some of the supplements.

BTW I'm also exercising several times a week and upped the time from 30 minutes to 40/45 this week.

jodee · 15/01/2002 18:01

Well done Pamina, considering all the naughty stuff you have been eating! Even if it is only temporary, it does make you feel good, doesn't it.

I have to confess I had a Kitkat and Flyte bar yesterday, I was sooo bored at work, but today I've been busy busy and so had no time to pick at things, so that is definitely the key for me.

A word of warning about ketosis. If you are getting a dark purple colour on your sticks it means that yes, you are burning fat but it also means you're not drinking enough water. You should be drinking at least 2 litres a day. This will enable your body to flush the ketones out. If you don't then they will be released in other ways - most notably on your breath! Which is why it's said that some people on the Atkins Diet have death breath! So remember ladies, drink loads of water. I find it best to take a small bottle in to work with me and keep filling that up instead of one large intimidating one.

I've lost 2lbs so far and I'm on the second week of induction. Had some of the Thorntons chocolate this afternoon. Mmmmmm!

Lizzer · 15/01/2002 22:32

GAH! The unthinkable has happened I have been invited on a DATE!!! Must eat less right now, must not be seen in bridget jones control pants on night (he should be so lucky!) Must exercise more and drink only water. I've only got 10 DAYS to shrink - talk about an incentive!

ScummyMummy · 15/01/2002 22:40

Fantastico! Who is the lucky man? Are you sure he's worthy? And why unthinkable, Miss LovelyLizzer? If it weren't for heterosexuality problems I'd invite you on a date myself!

Lizzer · 15/01/2002 23:06

Oh thanks scummy, and I'd accept! I dunno why I'm so scared, out of practice probably - it has been 2 (count 'em) yrs since I became single and its just a bit too much (though have met him before, on NY's eve - but was v drunk!) We have just been texting and now its all happening, argh! He seems nice enough and is v good looking, but looks aren't everything I know...ahem...

Tinker · 15/01/2002 23:24

Lizzer - hope you have a fab time. On my last date, I was in a restuarant and bent down to get my bag. Completely lost my balance and ended up sprawled on the floor. He didn't ask me out again!

winnie · 16/01/2002 10:14

Lizzer, just be yourself... how could he not be impressed...? oh, the days of dating.. (whistful moment)... Enjoy, eat, drink and be merry (but not too merry - for obvious reasons)...

On the subject of weight loss. My scales must be wrong because I have lost 10lbs in 9 days!!!!!! Have to say my trousers are hanging off me and I am not hungry! Thank you Nigella for the advice (although I think all of the walking is helping too!)

wendym · 16/01/2002 11:05

Dates? Can't have those, too much carbohydrate. Oh sorry Lizzer - one track mind.

Decided today to quit Atkins after more dizzy spells so I'm looking forward to an apple with lunch. Pathetic isn't it?

Ems · 16/01/2002 11:05

Lizzer, how very very exciting!!! What an incentive to starve!! Cant wait to hear all about it, as obviously we are all expecting you to share it all with us!

I've survived my week going back to Weightwatchers, lots of veg soup and thinking before I put food in my mouth, had a very nice meal on Saturday night when friends came over, and still managed to lose 3lb today at weigh-in.

Have been tired though, thankfully got rid of the horrible headaches, they were horrendous. So am hoping to soon feel re-energised and positive etc.
