Weight Loss - January

There are so many of us doing the above, and on quite a few boards; Atkins, Weight loss tablets etc. Thought it would make things easier to find and follow if we started on this? ....

I started yesterday, to try and lose my 'Christmas Chocolate'; probably half a stone, just using advice and memories from previous Weight Watchers.

Had a terrible headache by the time I went to bed, distinct lack of chocolate and sugar!! Every time I had food cravings, I drank a glass of water which seemed to help, plus its good to drink 2 litres a day, so I'm doing something good.

I started the day at supermarket getting all fresh veg, fruit and chicken. And the January edition of WW magazine, read all the inspiring stories of women shifting 4 stone, great stuff.

Chicken stir fry tonight. And last night I didnt pick at childrens supper either during cooking or after they'd 'eaten' it!! That is a major breakthrough! Weight loss is all down to breaking bad habits.

Oh, and Ive also been writing everything down that I eat, which makes you think about it a bit more.

Went off Boots detox idea after hearing of Alibubbles greenpoo, there been enough of that in this house!!

Star, I gave up smoking last April by going to a hypnotist. It was relatively easy, and although I miss it i don't crave it. It's hard tho' - I loved smoking too!! And I'm starving!!! What is Rooisbos tea wendym? And where do you get it? I can't find it in my healthfood shop and Carol Vorderman (yes I know, who wants to detox with CV for 28 days, it's hellish let me tell you!!) recomend it in her 28 day detox for life book. Still, I'll be smug when I've lost 10 lbs by the end of the month - ha, ha.

I drink caffe orzo - it's very popular in Italy, and I get it at an Italian grocery. Basically, it's just roasted barley. I've been through just about every caffeine free hot drink on the market, and this is my favourite - can't bear anything with chicory in it, the taste is so revolting!

wendym - It would depend on which part of Atkins your are on (ie. 14 day induction or OWL diet) due to different amounts of carbs you are allowed, and also on whether you are a veggie or not, but my lunchtime suggestions are:-

Hard boiled egg (Ok, smell like farts, but easy to have for packed lunch!)

Tuna and mayo (no one will want to sit next to you with this one either, but choice is a bit limited on Atkins as you know!)

Selection of cold meats or cheeses (Stilton, now there's a nice pungent one!)

Mixed nuts (but check carb levels)

Pepperamis

These are just a few off the top of my head (as you can see I am rather lacking in the imagination department). I'll try to find my Atkins book later and see if I can pinch a few exciting suggestions from it for you.

I'm on my 3rd day of the Atkins Induction diet, and so far so good. Going to leave it for a few more days yet before I weigh myself, to let that fat burning really get under way. Good Luck!

Lizzer · 09/01/2002 19:37

Hi Suew! Yeah you seem to really 'there' now don't you - and just remember the 'before' pictures! Can you just pop in every now and again though, just to check?!

Winnie - OH Nigella, she's just the best isn't she?! Almost makes you feel a little insecure but then swings it back by being so down to earth and real...

Nine days of getting up at 6 a.m. and going for a '40 minute speed walk'before the rest of the family are up and about. Hopefully, one day it will be a jog! Feeling very good about that!

Paula1 · 10/01/2002 09:33

SueW, I'm like you, sometimes (most of the time actually) I can completely ignore all the goodies in the house. Other times, I'll stand in the kitchen and 'hide' whilst I eat ds biscuits, chocolates and anything else I can find. I stop when I feel sick, and then spend the rest of the evening hating myself.

Alibubbles · 10/01/2002 11:49

Hi everybody, it's great to hear how you aare all doing . I could getto read the posts yesterday for some technical reason.
I love Jodee's comment about the Pralines whispering her name, that really made me chuckle! I adore chocolate leonidis especially, but not a morsel has passed my lips since Jan 1! (Start of Atkins Diet) Despite bringing back loads of the minatures for Switzerlaand at xmas. Trouble is the theory of I'll only have one never wworks, it's alsways one BOX!!

I have not missed chocolate surprisingly, even at my three o'clock lowtime. I did miss pasta, we eat it four times a week, and still miss it. I haven't missed any other wheat ot flour products and I feel so less bloated. The only cravings I have are for an apple and I never used to eat them before! I really missed wine, but am coping well now, even though DH has a bottle a night!
I keep a litre sports bottle of water by my side constantly and its surprising how much I get through 3.5 litres yesterday

I think it is really working, I have lost 7 lbs so far, I couldn't lose that on Herbalife in a month! I am really into it. DH can't believe howdisciplined I am being, but I am fed up of being overweight, I have four stone to lose from anti depressants (see depression if interested) and I really feel invigorated and full of energy so I hope I can inspire all of you.

My mother bought me a week at a health farm for my birthday present, but I asked her if I could go to the colonic clinic for a few sessions instead and she says yes, whatever I like. Any one tried it? I'll let you all know when I have!

Sorry about the double post! How do I start a new discussion? I'd like to find out if any one ghas been for colonic irrigation/therapy /hydrotherapy please

Joe1 · 10/01/2002 12:18

Alibubbles go to topics, pick one and go right to the bottom and you will see it there

Twink · 10/01/2002 13:21

Blimey Winnie, that takes some doing especially at this time of year ! Got any spare willpower ? I think I'm doing well if I crawl out of bed and do my stomach exercises before dd is up..
I'm off for my first official weigh-in since mid-Dec later, so am sitting here with fingers crossed that it won't be as bad as I'd feared.

Still, on the positive side, I've got more chance of wearing a bikini this summer than last so its worth keeping going !

wendym · 10/01/2002 13:25

I'm still on the induction phase of Atkins and having egg for breakfast so have invested in pepperami and a Matthesons smoked pork sausage (Safeway special) and no - I haven't eaten it all at once. Definitely not a veggie More help please - where did you get your ketone testing strips, how much are they and what did you say when asking for them? Been too shy to get any yet. I'm definitely in the ratty stage now.

Ems · 10/01/2002 13:39

Well done Alibubbles, you sound really positive and it sounds like its going really well, half a stone is great. The more weight you see coming off the more inspired you get dont you.

BTW rooibos tea is tea made from the redbush shrub. that's from South Africa. To quote the packet it "... has a unique, naturally sweet, aromatic taste, fruity aroma and deep red colour. Rich in vitamin C, minerals and antioxidants, it is an ideal alternative to black tea. " Well its not too bad really.

wendym · 10/01/2002 14:45

salalex - got my tea in local health food store - it said organic redbush and its made by clipper teas [email protected] might find you a supply.

JanZ · 10/01/2002 15:15

Sainsbury's and maybe even large Safeways now sell "Redbush" teabags (BTW - rooibos means redbush in Akrikaans). I enjoyed rooibos while I was pregnant - and still drink the occasional cup when I want to cut back on my caffeine intake. My Mum, who was brought up in South Africa (I left when I was 3, so as far as I am concerned, I'm Scottish!) thinks I'm mad liking it, but I do!

Personally I drink it with milk, but you are supppposed to drink it black (orshould that be "red"?)

It's also supposed to be good for children!

Alibubbles · 10/01/2002 16:08

Thank you Joe 1 for the info and Ema for the encouragement. I really need to keep on a high to maintain the disciplined approach, i could fall over at anytime, especially as I have been baking chocloate chip cookies with my minded children......Oh the smell, it's heaven!

wendym - Thought of something else for your lunch, as suggested by my little sis, whom I've also roped into doing the Atkins with me - Mini Babybels light - no carbs and more protein than fat, so scoff away, Also, what about making a little pot of sugarfree jelly the night before to take in, may help satisfy any sweet cravings you're having.
I sent my dh off to get some ketone testing strips, as I also was a tad embarrassed, and bless him, he came up trumps for once! He got them from Boots pharmacy and they were £4 odd for 50 - bargain eh!

jasper · 10/01/2002 23:36

Wendym tell the paharmacist if they ask the strips are for your cousin who has diabetes...
They probably won't ask.

Well, I'd put on a pound but knowing what I'd eaten or more particularly, drunk over Christmas it could have been far worse !
Am definitely back to it this week though I've got aches in muscles I didn't know I had after first session back at the gym..
