Horrendous day in A+E with dd - knee/hip injury ??? Viral something?

Piffle · 13/03/2006 22:28

8 am dd wakes up screaming
Cannot weight bear say left knee is sore
Calpol and think shes banged it on her bed (she said that) and she'll be ok in an hour or so
Nope so ring GP - he says A+E as not weight bearing is not good.
A+E Xray broken for 24 hrs. I wish they had told me before I had sat in a 4x6ft room with one very sore and bored 3 yr old for 6.5 hrs
Finally got see orthopaedic hap, said he thought is was dds hip, some post viral condition, but without xray could not rule out crack or fracture.
So sent me off to paediatrics FINALLY to see a paediatric ortopaedic chap.
He says the same, he says dd has deffo hurt her knee, he thinks crack of one of the knee bones or greenstick fracture of the femur.
He says coem back tomorrow at 9 am for an xray
Of course
They will have an enormous backlog so am thinking of asking to go to another hospital even if it means travelling another half hour
Me and dd were so knackered....
Just had to vent
Anyone ever heard of post viral hip inflammation btw?
Am scared at thought of tiny dd in a leg laster though
She has been SO BRAVE!

poor you, what a horrible day. i hope tomorrow is better.. i've heard of joint problems through virus, but never green stick fracture!

Don't be scared of her having a plaster - she will be the centre of attention and lovin' it! I hope you're manaaging to get some rest?

katyrocks · 13/03/2006 22:39

PS i wouldn't go to another hospital, you'll have to go through all the details again. with any luck the x-ray dept will not be busy at 9am

RTKangaMummy · 13/03/2006 22:40

oh dear poor DD

DS had post viral hip inflamation that caused him alot of pain

His pain is usually in his knees but last time consultant said it was from his hip

He has problems with his knees and the ligaments etc He is extremely hypermobile in his knee joints

Well done to her for being such a brave deffo brill girl SmileSmileSmile

coppertop · 13/03/2006 22:40

No advice or experience but poor dd. :(

Keep meaning to ask how your ds is. I saw the thread where he'd been punched in the face but the search thingy went down soon after and I couldn't find it again.

Piffle · 13/03/2006 22:42

ds is fine, he has become something of a hit with girls and that has shut the other lads up :)

I am sure beyond sure that dd has hurt her knee, she keeps saying knee ouch everytime she moves
Weird though she cannot weight bear but she can crawl albeit slowly. She can stand for a bit but not lift he leg to walk.
I am baffled and without xray so were all the doctors....

RTKangaMummy · 13/03/2006 22:44

DS was saying the pain was in his knee too but his consultant manovered his legs and said it was from hip joint

Did they manover her legs around????

DumbledoresGirl · 13/03/2006 22:45

Ds2 broke his leg when he was 19 months old and it took me a day before I even took him to A&E. He couldn't weight bear but he wasn't in the obvious agony you would expect of someone who had broken a bone. He had a full leg plaster for 5 weeks, all the way through July/August. I hope your dd doesn't need one, but you know katyrocks is right, if she does, she will love being the centre of attention.

DumbledoresGirl · 13/03/2006 22:46

When a hip joint is damaged, the pain can be referred to the knee. I know because my mother had a painful knee for years and even had surgery on it before they realised she needed a hip replacement.

Piffle · 13/03/2006 22:48

she is totally hip flexible no loss of hip movement and no pain on movement, the only thinkwas when they were feeling her hip, it tickled her and she pulled her leg up and then it hurt her knee so she cried and they thought OH Hip is sore [sigh]
Yes dd does not seem in enough pain to be broken but she has don something nasty as she has a dead good pain threshold and is not a moaner at all...
Time will tell I guess....

hope she's feeling better tomorrow and you get it all sorted out [hugs] for brave little girl

RTKangaMummy · 14/03/2006 18:32

PIFFLE

How is DD today??????

What happened at hospital?????

Hope she is ok Smile

Piffle · 14/03/2006 20:50

Another long day
101 xrays nothing broken, dd is 100% sure it is her knee, she says ouch when standing, can walk assisted but very very slow and limps and is in pain, she can crawl ab fab though, so dr was very confused that her knee can be so sore to not be able to weight bear, but that she can crawl and kneel!
He said if it was ligament, there would be swelling and heat and sore to touch, muscles also would be sore. He said to stop a child putting weight on one leg it is almost always a hip problem or leg fracture.
Her hip is fine, can move it, swivel roll, kneel, w sit...
Mind Boggles
have been referred to fracture clinic next monday for consultant referral to physio/splints whatever.
They are now also keeping obs on her for Perthes disease just in case.
Am shattered beyond words, dd has been a total treasure, she has charmed an entire hospital today and yesterday.
My back is killing from carrying her too...
I am hoping she will be better in the morning but she was no better this am, than yesterday so who knows
I have a ward to take her straight back to if anything worsens.
When she is not moving it, shes fine so we should be ok...
Sorry I'm waffling now... been a long.... day!

didn't someone else have something similar... i think it was lilsmum? only hers was with foot...

RTKangaMummy · 14/03/2006 21:00

Crumbs Sad

But she sounds a deffo brill angel though Smile

LIZS · 14/03/2006 21:03

Your poor dd .Sad dd had a post viral hip thing at about 18 months, referred to at the time as a "hip cold". A couple of days of anti inflammatories cleared it but I suppose if your dd has been moving awkwardly she may have caused a further injury. Hope you get is sorted out quickly. We had a good experience with A and E a few weeks a go and had no queue for an xray at Saturday lunchtime, fingers crossed you may be lucky.

Polgara2 · 14/03/2006 21:25

My dd2 had what sounds like a similar experience. She complained that she couldn't walk on her leg, hopped around everywhere, so after a day of this I took her up to hospital. Spent horrendous day having hip xray and blood tests (by incompetent staff!!! Angry). Anyway they couldn't find anything and made an appointment for day after next for fracture clinic. Miraculously, the following day it just went alright again, didn't take her to fracture clinic and never found out what it was, but it lasted 3 days and she was definitely in pain, enough for me to have to carry her everywhere. She was about 3.5 at the time btw.

katyrocks · 14/03/2006 21:25

poor dd, sounds like she's been a star, but you must be totally worn out, hope tomorrow is better

NotQuiteCockney · 14/03/2006 21:30

My DS1 lost the use of his right arm for a few days when he was about 1 year old, and the use of one leg when about 1.5. The leg thing messed up his gait for a few months.

Because he was so little, we didn't know what it all felt like to him, but he clearly did not want to use the damaged arm/leg.

I'm pretty sure these two were both viral things. We had A+E, Xrays, and the second time, consultants. No answers, ever.

I know a few other people who've had this happen, too. Kids are weird.

HappyMumof2 · 14/03/2006 21:40

I wonder if this is what's going on with dd. She has been complaining of her knee hurting for weeks now but only in the mornings and not every morning.....

took her to GP last week who said it could be knee or hip and wants to see her in two weeks to think about possible referrel.

She did previously have a greenstick fracture, but to the other leg! weird........

hope your dd is feeling better soon piffle Smile

Piffle · 15/03/2006 10:20

Could it really be hip if it is her knee hurting so much though?
I'm baffled beyond belief. Same again this am, no improvement.
I guess its wait and see...

PIffle hun! I can't beieve what I have just read!! My DS1 has been in hospital for 2 days having tests for Perthe's too!! He started on Sunday morning complaining his hip hurt and limping. I sent him to school on Monday (mean mummy) and made him a GP appointment for that evening. The GP referred him for immediate admission to the local children's ward where he has been for the majority of the last 2 days. He is on home leave now but I have to return with him tomorrow morning to see the Orthopods. He had blood tests to rule out post viral problems, and his x-ray this mornign was normal although they can't rule out Perthe's as it takes a while to show on x-rays. I am going to suggest they do a scan tomorrow to see how his blood flow is in the area as Perthe's is the lack of blood flow to the top of the femur. I have been talking about it on \link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=1375&threadid=145199\this thread!} I really really feel for you. How old is DD?

Enid · 15/03/2006 17:13

sorry to hear this piffle, keep us posted Sad

Piffle · 15/03/2006 17:48

Coathanger!!!!
Unreal...
dd is 3y4m.
Does your ds have significant hip pain?
DD has none it is really bizarre
I am taking her to an osteo tomorrow to get another gen on it...
May seek 2nd opinion, am terrified they have missed something
DD cannot even walk unaided and even with me holding both her arms she can only limp minute steps very gingerly and only if crying saying ouch all the time.
Otherwise she is fine
I am in bits worrying and ffs googling is about the WORST thing I should have done....
How is your ds today CH?

OP posts:
Coathanger · 15/03/2006 18:58

DS is not too bad. Ibuprofen is helping quite a bit and he is glad to be home from hospital although we have to go back tomorrow to see ortho team again.

DS only has pain on walking and certain movements of his leg. When the consultant moves his leg around he only complains of pain in some directions of movement (consistant with Perthe's :() He has been ordered to stay on strict bedrest and is forbidden to walk - slightly difficult for a boistous 6 year old, but there you go!

Not sure what tomorrow holds yet but will let you know.

What is next for your DD?

going4potty · 15/03/2006 20:05

Hi piffle ,hope dd is ok. Osteomyelitis or bone infection can ocur in children and treated fairly easily, but the more common reason may be a muscle thats pulled. Let us know how you both get on
