just been on the phone to peter. he has an wound on his chest from the LVAD op, it just wont heal, it has been dressed, treated swabbed, etc, it just wont heal. it cracks and bleeds, scabs over, starts to heal then does it again.

one of the docs saw him today and says they wont transplant him with this wound, and that he needs to grow up and be a man. he also needs to eat high protein foods like steak (!! where can he get steak from in the hospital, please tell me). Apparently she also said he is going to die. not sure if i belive that bit mind you, tho he says she said the same things to anaother patient. i am fuming!

well if he grows uyp and looks after himself then the wound will heal (rolls eyes). he has lost weight, he needs to put it back on, but suggesting STEAK! i mean, i'm not sure thats provided on nhs.

Misdee - that's awful Angry. Peter must be fed up enough without being subjected to that. It's hardly within his power to dictate his diet whilst in hospital - they should be taking care of that. And as for his wound - FGS i'm sure he really wants it not to heal.

It's sounds like the doc needs a lesson in bedside manners!

Most hospitals have an independently run patient advisory service where you can complain about a patient's treatment and they (supposedly)co-ordinate resolution for you.

Might be worth checking out..

i dont know who peter is or whats going on but i would imagine they are not doing something right if a wound is not healing.
If you have some cord powder, antiseptic powder stuff they put on babies belly buttons, put some of that on it on the sly. i will be healed and dry in about 3 days- i guarantee it.
You will all think im a loony but my grandad told me they used to put it on gun shot wounds during ww2 to heal those up!

The woman is an idiot. There are lots of high protein foods, cashew nuts, for instance are high in protein and are something that you can easily bring in for him.

i am fuming. i bring in things like cooked chicken (has to be prepackaged) and nuts.

its a good job i am not going in today or i'll slap her.

the wound is at the top of his chest where they opened him up for OHS in july. one surgeon said last week, that that area is very hard to heal anyway and try not to worry too much. he has a gel stuff put on it everyother day and it is dressed.

I dont think it is good bedside manner at all
but as an in patient alot last year
they could be trying a reverse physchological approach
I seen this done whilst I was in for patients that were a bit depressed or werent responding that well to treatment.
not excusing their behaviour at all but trying to give maybe a resoning behind it

Also as I was on a surgical ward, there were a few people whose wounds would not heal (mainly wounds from bottom of rib cage to pubic line) One woman in particular was admitted 4 times because her wound kept on opening up, even after stitching inside and out.
Some people just do not heal as others.
As for the steak the doc/consultant can put him on a high protein diet at the drop of a hat.
Has this been done yet??

Completely out of order IMO. I can agree with some of the sentiment in that sometimes patients get stuck in a rut, unmotivated, not prepared to do anything for themselves. However, I am not saying this is true of Peter. Especially after coming home yesterday, that will have been brilliant for him and really give him something to aim for.

Can you ring and ask to speak to the nurse who was on the ward round with the doctor? There should always be a nurse there to act as a patient advocate. It would give you a different slant on it and you could find out why she wasn't more supportive of Peter.

I'm sorry that Peter has been so upset. I think she thinks she is trying to shake and wake him up, believing he needs it (I don't know if he does or not) but she went totally the wrong way about it and needs to be reprimanded as to her interpersonal skills. Angry

i dont know atm, will ask him about the dietician and her suggestions soon. he is on build-up drinks as well.

sounds like he might be then already on it, but wanting to put extra protein iykwim into him to help with healing etc

is there a cafe/restaurant for staff at hosp
if so could you order some extra meat/fish etc and it can be delivered to his ward
I used to ask for bacon, sausage, tomatoes for my breakfast when I was allowed to eat and i used the staff restaurant
it was very cheap too

Misdee we have never really spoken before but I have followed your story since I joined MN a wee while ago. That really is awful, what a terrible man, please complain.

AND make sure peters wound is reviewed by the tissue viability nurse ASAP. then make sure you are there when she is (if possible) and insist she educats the staff as to how exactely this wound should be treated. She will also check staff hygeine when dressingthe wound etc. I am shocked, this really is the last thing you need
