Please help me, please help me...We have all taken the meds for threadworm...but how do you alleviate the itching.....?

....it is driving ds2 insane. Had to bathe him at 11.30 last night which helped a little.

He has got out of the bath about 2 hours ago and is still dancing around in his room. Driving him nuts.

Does anyone know how to actually stop the itching?

Pleeeeeeeeaase!

would antihistamines work? or failing that apply some calamine ointment erm locally?

Have got him to apply sudocreme but I'm not sure if it actually helps.

He is doing my head in.

put lots of vaseline around his bottom? the itching is caused by the worms wriggling. I'd say vaseline will stop them in their tracks for a bit?

Took meds at teatime tonight. I can't find any info on relieving local irritation though.

Do you have any anthisan in the house, or piriton. Wonder if that would help. Should be settled by tomorrow if you've taken the medication tonight. The itching drove dd nuts too. I gave her a cold flannel IIRC to hold against the itchy area. Blighters had crawled up into her vagina - was most unpleasant for her and very frustrating for us as at that time we had no idea what was causing it.

All the info says they crawl out of the bum at night.......how the hell do they know it's night fgs?

well once youve taken the final tab, then i think it kills them within 48 hors, so if its any consolation, it shouldnt last much longer, if it does then it may mean, that the treatment hasnt worked or hes re-infected.

have you done the usual of washing towels and bedding on hotwash, giving every one their own towel to dry hands, cleaning door handles..blah blah, the blasted eggs get everywhere.

The eggs that the thread worms lay are shaped like little conquers that is why they itch. Another good wash and some kind of soothin cream, sudocream or the likes.
It is really important he doesnt itch or the cycle will not break.

Ovex is a fairly innocuous tablet rather than pripsin which is available for under twos.

Rip the bedroom apart and clean, clean, clean. Put him in the bath at midnight if necessary and rub vaseline or sudocrem all around his bum. Then sit him in front of a video - at midnight if necessary - until he falls asleep. We have been there and done this. I missed a whole Inspector Morse episode whilst my child wriggled and screamed on my lap. It is so distressing. You have to clean the bedroom and boil all the linen or throw it away. I even threw my vacuum away after the damn worms. Then you have to worry about which child gave them to him in the first place!! I told the school - big mistake. They just thought we were dirty and got the worms from a dog (we don't have a dog).

pripsen is only avaliable on prescription, ovex is avaliable over the counter.

Yes ovex is what all of us have had in liquid form. ds4 is 13mths so he has had pripsen.

How long after ds2 has had the meds will he be free from itching do you think?

Jennypog - really? I need to really do all that? Blimey, didn't realise.

I think they wriggle and itch more once you've given them the medicine (like they know they are going to die!). Sometimes, in the morning, you can actually see some dead ones around their bums. Make sure for the next 24-48 hours, you wipe their bums to clean up any dead or half dead ones.

and don't forget (for the ones on Ovex) to take that 2nd dose in 2 weeks time (can't remember the time frame - read what it says on the packet).

That should catch any stragglers that may have reinfected your kids.

Well, we were so thorough about cleaning the upstairs of the house after she'd had threadworms and they never came back. So it must have worked. We also had the cleanest house in town! I was told by the doctor that the eggs become airborne and we breathe them in! I was determined not to go through what we went through again as my littlest rubbed herself red and raw. She went all glazy eyed and screamed and screamed. I thought she was having a convulsion!! Then I remembered having heard about threadworms on the radio and I looked at her bum. You can see them wriggling - yuck.
