Did you have nits as a child the way todays kids do?

I didnt. Maybe I was so antisocial I didnt ever get near enough to anyone to catch them! But I have to wet comb my kids every couple of days because at least one of my dds will no doubt have a big nit crawling about and I try and get them before they lay zillions of eggs.
Were you always riddled?

No, because the nit nurse did the rounds and your parent was expected to sort out the problem PDQ.

starlover · 30/01/2006 21:02

nope! i had my hair done TWICE!
but then, we did used to have the nit nurse at school... dunno if that made a difference really

My sister and I had headlice once that I remember. Mum had our beautiful, long, blonde hair cut short!!! It was easier to treat shorter hair.

Blandmum · 30/01/2006 21:04

The probelms is that now there are some kids who never get cleared up, and they are constantly re-infesting the rest of the kids. It took me about 5 weeks to clear up dd last time. I'd get rid of them all, and she would come home with a crop of new ones

charliecat · 30/01/2006 21:04

Oh yeah!!......and no warning IIRC...We used to be given a Have nits/Hasnt got nits note....
At dds school the nit nurse comes on the first day of each term, hoping I guess that over the Holidays the parents have had time to nit comb!

i never had nits, but the nit nurse used to come around. we definetly need them back. i worked in a playgroup which had them all the time and there was nothing they could do about it. i was always itching but luckily never caught anything.

mykidsmum · 30/01/2006 21:07

I remember getting my mate to shake her headnext to mine as i wanted them so badly

LIZS · 30/01/2006 21:07

I never got it afaik, even though my bestfriend at one time had them often. Fingers crossed ours have avoided them so far ! If a live one is spotted at school we'll be rung and asked to bring them home

devilJARM · 30/01/2006 21:08

once or twice when i was kid - no more than that....

WigWamBam · 30/01/2006 21:09

No - never had them. We had a nit nurse who would send a stroppy letter home if she spotted them. They used to be given out in front of the entire class, but I don't remember anyone in my class ever getting them.

My dd has been at school since September and we have had four letters since then notifying us that there are head lice in her class - it's rife again at the moment. I think it's probably a combination of a lack of nit nurse and a resistance to chemical treatments that means it's a completely different situation now to how it was when I was at school 30-odd years ago.

expatinscotland · 30/01/2006 21:10

No. I NEVER had lice/nits. But we had regular screenings by the school nurse for 'em.

i don't remember ever having them, but i was at school when nitty nora still used to visit. i know my younger brother did though, he's 12 years younger than me, and i think the nit nurse had been disbanded by then

Spidermama · 30/01/2006 21:16

Never.

spursmum · 30/01/2006 21:17

I had them a few times when the nit nurse was stopped because my aunt never deloused my cousins. But not in around 8 years now. Just you wait..now Ive said that, my ds will come home from nursery with the little blighters!

Our local hairdresser comes in, we have a school form that you have to sign giving permission for her to do it and with the bookbags on the first day is a nit comb!!

Never

zaphod · 30/01/2006 21:41

Far worse. My dd once had an adult louse on her head and a few nits, but so far that's it. (She is 9) I on the other hand would get infestation after infestation, and no matter what my mother tried, the last bout were so hard to shift, I was lousy for months. The back of my head became raw from scratching, and then infected.

Finally, a doctor told her to use DDT, a pesticide that I believe is no longer used because of it's harmful side effects. It worked, and I haven't had them since.

You can imagine the horror that even the thought of lice fills me with. It was so bad that when I would scratch, I'd often get a louse under my nail.

Caligula · 30/01/2006 21:45

Never had them.

My DS's school now goes in for the "FGS keep the blighters away from school until you've combed the nits out" way of life, and he hasn't had nits for well over a year since they started to just send kids home.

It's brilliant. Name, shame and stigma. I'm all for it.

colditz · 30/01/2006 21:50

I always had nits, as did my sister. Not my brother though.
