Hi Footle,
I've never listened to Woman's Hour (I had heard of it, years ago, but didn't know it was still around). Given how prudish our culture tends to be, do you think they would go into this?
Where will I find it?
Best wishes,
Sylvia

Sounds like we are starting something here - prolapse awareness campaign Smile?? Maybe we could even all get to meet up for a weekend away to discuss all this further and toast are various 'bits' Wine Grin.

I think all this has been swept under the carpet for far too long and a lot of the problem is this blessed equality stuff which now works against us as we are forever striving to proove that we are as capable as men (if not more so) in doing everything including car tyres, house renovations, furniture removals, etc. There is a reason why women never did heavy manual work before the war - we aren't biologically made to do it! I wonder what the rate of occurance for prolapse was in those turn of the century days? Interesting thought...Hmm

IfOnly - how did it go? Keep us posted x

surewoman · 17/01/2012 17:22

Oh, and another thought - how may people had babies lying flat on their backs with legs in stirrups and then suffered prolapse? If we were made to have babies on our backs then our vaginas would be in our buttocks, me thinks!! Grin

cocolepew · 17/01/2012 18:22

Maybe we should say what our ages, symptons and why we think/or know why we have had proalpses?

I'm 43,
have 2 children, first one 9lb 2oz, forceps, cut, and stirrups.

Second DD, 8lb 8oz, induced due to SPD.

I work as a additional special needs classroom assistant (17 years), so have always did a lot of lifting.

Have had TVT and a womb ablation 4 years ago, TVT due to stress incontinence and ablation due to heavy periods.

jackie62 · 17/01/2012 19:07

Footle, funny you should mention Women's Hour! At 10 am on Thursday this week Liz Reece is talking about problems with TVT tape. I think it is Radio 4 for anyone who want s to listen in.

Nannasylv · 17/01/2012 20:01

Hi, folks,
This is the message I've sent to the Health editor, at the Guardian:

Dear Ms Bosely,

I, and many others, have been supporting each other, in a forum "Rectocele & Repairs continued".

We need the help of someone like you, willing to look into a subject which is embarrassing (for all concerned), and life-changing (in many negative ways) for all of those suffering with it.

I could waffle on, but that would probably send you to sleep, so I am asking if you would consider researching, initially by logging in to Mumsnet, and reading what is happening to so many of us.

Broken marriages, lives, and careers (many of us would like to be well enough to re-join the British workforce), are a direct effect of the lack of early scans (manual examination cannot possibly establish the full extent in some cases) for the internal damage caused by Rectocele, Enterocele, Cystocele, and Fistulae, which can follow childhood abuse, childbirth, and other trauma to the abdomen.

Please let me know if you are willing to research this, and (hopefully) help us to change the route taken, by the medical profession, as soon as someone indicates that they may be suffering with one/more of these problems.

I look forward, and hope to be, hearing from you.

Thanks to Footle for the help with finding someone I hope is an appropriate journalist.

My sister said it might help if others contact her as well.
I thought I'd give her a few days, then ask if she might run with it. You never know!
Perhaps you can all tell me what you think?

Nannasylv · 17/01/2012 20:16

Cocopelew, You're probably right about looking at the possible causes (proven or otherwise)

I'm 56, was raped at 8 years old I was told in 1996 this can be a cause (constipation soon became a problem after this) , had an Episiotomy during first birth, Forceps for second, abuse in first marriage (once with a tampon in) causing several vaginal infections, had a vaginal repair after divorce, had a coil briefly, have done LOTS of very heavy lifting, worked in a job where going to the loo often had to be delayed, have been mis-advised about using laxatives /painkillers for the symptoms.

This is a little difficult for me, but I can't expect the right results, without giving full information, and there may be others who share the same potential causes.

Nannasylv · 17/01/2012 20:24

Oh, I forgot to add to my list a car crash, in 1983 (steering wheel bruised my lower abdomen quite badly)

surewoman · 17/01/2012 20:51

Nannasylv - don't be afraid to speak up; when the time is right to face the demons it has to be done and by mentioning stuff it will help you 'heal' inside and out. At least you are putting everything behind you and moving forward. None of what happened is your fault, just paths in life, without which you wouldn't be who you are today - one strong woman! xxxxx

surewoman · 17/01/2012 20:55

Hey ladies, what shall we have printed on our T-shirts, Grin lol!!! How about "inside out"!!! X

Nannasylv · 17/01/2012 21:02

Surewoman, thanks for that. It's something I have come to terms with, but you're always afraid of what others' reactions might be, so avoid the subject. I just felt that there may be others, with similar backgrounds, who should know it can be the cause.

Feel a little afraid, having stuck my neck so far out of my shell.

By the way, looking forward to the T-shirt design lol!!

Nannasylv · 17/01/2012 21:04

Thanks Jackie, I'll try to tune in.

happy2beme · 17/01/2012 22:27

Nannasylv- please dont be afriad to stick your neck out the shell how else do you get to enjoy the sunshine :). Had similar experience to yourself from
3-7yrs and in marriage from 17-24, I dont shout it from the rooftops but niether do I hide it, in the right context I will discuss it openly with anyone, if my being honest can help somebody else then I will :) x And as surewomen so rightly said It makes you the person you are today and stronger x

My symptoms however seem to have occurred post children especially my middle child 13yrs ago. I am 45yrs with 3 children all induced (with syntocinon linked to higher incidence of prolapse) vaginal births with back to back labour, although DC all turned at last minute themselves so no forceps. Big babies 8lb13oz, 9lb5oz, 9lb15oz. 1 epesiotomy and 2 perineal tears.
Chronic constipation due to shift work and I have to confess yoyo dieting (currently overweight), nurse for 20yrs so heavy lifting, standing ect.
My consultant did say it is a hazzard of my job he has many nurses who have had to have repairs of some form Hmm , In reality I think this may be partially true but I think this may be in part due to the high % of females in this profession. Hope you remain in a good place and never apologise unless you did something wrong xx

cocolepew · 18/01/2012 15:17

Have been feeling quite sore down below, ?? worry about the TVTo , not severe pain just a constant niggle, hope it goes soon. Dont know if it is more my pubic bone had probs with this previously and just agrivated by surgery. Also stepped up my walking so maybe it has just upset things a little lol.
Hope all you ladies who are beggining to move forward with your journey keep well x

If0nly · 18/01/2012 17:22

Thanks for the gl, went ok... Forgot to ask any questions let alone write the answers down!! Lol nerves got the better of me!! Gp examined me bit didn't say mich at all!! I've been referred to gyno tho and prescribed laxatives to take everyday?!???

Now just gotta wait 4 weeks... But already things are movin!! :-)

If0nly · 18/01/2012 17:29

I meant atleast things are moving!! Lol. Oooops

surewoman · 18/01/2012 17:36

Well done IfOnly - isn't it hopeless the way nerves always get the better of us, despite all our good intentions re. Q's and A's. I'm back to the consultant tomorrow to find out why I'm so full of stitches after 12 weeks! At least the antibiotics seem to have made a difference, unless something has given a bit, 'coz this time last week I couldn't even sit down!!!

Happy - did you have anterior repair for cystocele as well or just the TVT-o??? and what are your thoughts on the TVT-o??? xxx

cocolepew · 18/01/2012 18:23

thanks everyone Smile, I found the TVT niggled for a long time, you really do need to take it easy.

Well done Ifonly! 4 weeks will fly in.

good luck surewoman Smile
