How do I get nurofen or paracetamol into dd1?

She has a raging temperature. She is 6 and refuses point blank to take any medicine. Have just spent hellish night tossing and turning while she gabbled away and breathed so fast it made me panic. She is quiet now and on the sofa but still burning hot.

She only wants water to drink and when I tried to disguise crushed up paracetamol knew immediately and spat it out

driving me nuts!!

Can keep her head/neck cool Enid? (damp flannels/thick towel over bag of froz peas as a pillow etc) I seem to remember someone saying that as long as you keep their heads cool you should be able to avoid dangerous overheating/fitting (but I'm no doctor so you really should check with NHS Direct)

i have no thermometer so have no idea how high her temp is

she is red in the face and boiling to touch though

will do cold flannel thanks

Wont she take calpol? You can get one from 6 upwards. I would also phone gp.

no she has never taken calpol in her life! even as a baby she refused it.

she will take nurofen at a push if I get cross

going out to get chocolate now as bribe to see if that helps

Buy Nurofen sugar free in a bottle. DS likes orange, but hates strawberry (he also will not take Calpol). Nurofen in a bottle comes with a dosing syringe. Using left arm, Hold your munchkin in a neck lock on your knee, head slightly back. With right hand. inject medicine into the buccal (cheek) area - there's space here to 'hold' it. Gently hold mouth close and tickle under the chin - she'll be stimulated to swallow.

Ibuprofen is an excellent for temps, much much better than paracetamol.

Do not use Ibuprofen if munchkin is dehydrated - can cause rapid renal failure. And not if she's asthmatic apparently.

dd1 will not take any form of medication, she hates calpol and neurofen, so I ermmm mix neurofen with a little orange juice and she drinks it.....

It was the baby neurofen orange flavoured stuff, which I mixed with her OJ, the child loves juice.

Suppositories. You can get them over the counter in most chemists and they work faster than oral paracetomol. They are expensive though (about £2 each) but IMO totally worth it.

For any medicine I use a syringe and dose DS while he is sucking on an ice pop. He hardly even notices. The higher his temp the more he wants ice pops in preference to water. Calypso sell ice pops that are made solely from juice and mineral water with no additives and you get them in Sainsburys (blue coloured box). You can get syringes from any chemist.

suppositories sound good unfortunately I didn't read this thread before I went to chemist

went to tescos who now ONLY do calpol/nurofen or calpol-alikes. No soluble disprol for kids.

Went to boots got some soluble disprol and dissolved in it some quite strong ribena. she drank it and has been fine all day but is now sleeping on sofa and beginning to shiver and shake again. She again won't take any meds. Will keep on with cold flannel.

her temp is 40 btw have no idea whether that is high or not (can you tell how often my kids are ill )

Enid, 40C is high - you really need to get some Ibuprofen in her to bring it down.

i told my dd1 who is 5, that if she didnt take it then i;d have to take her to the hospital and they make give her an injection. dd1 said 'ok i'll take it but have a drink ready afterwards'

You can mix calpol into a fromage frais as long as it is eaten in about 30 minutes after mixing....I have checked this out with the medical info people at the manufacturers

agree with misdee, she is old enought o try that line of thought.

we did similar with DD1, 4, when she had a dodgy eye; DH actually drove to A and E and then told her that if dhe sidn't use the eyedrops then the dr would ahbe to do it.

Worked a trewat>

enid, you have my empathies! we're going thru the same thing w/DD1 (age 2.5) and her anti-biotics, which she REALLY needs to take for this nasty chest infection she has.

highlander, THANKS for the tip about tickling the chin.

dd1 boaks or spits up some of the med we give her. going to tickle her chin so she has to swallow it. of course, i'm worried she'll boak.

i HATE how she forces herself to bring it up. going to give her the medication a good half hour before bed so she'll be sitting upright and not be able to boak in bed, which she did TWICE last night until i lost it w/her and shouted at her.

When the girls have really refused dh has held them down and held their noses to make them swallow, sounds awful but they don't refuse the next time yo want them to have some meds.

dh just did that to dd1, tegan. we want to enjoy his night off as soon as he gets back from taking dd2 a drive so she'll hopefully sleep during 'sea of souls' :}

I have actually bought my chemists own brand of calpol and dd2 likes it better and has it with no probs so perhaps it's just a taste thing. But i still give her medised to go to bed on.

Enid this sounds awful, poor you, poor her. How is she this morning?
She does need ibroprufen or parecetamol to bring down a temp that high - so I guess it's disgiuse or a firm talking to plus star chart for each dose and bribery, or a dosing syringe and force, or suppositories.
Whar is her main objection to medecine? taste? Reacting to your need for her to take it?
Hope she improves v soon.

other than she is like this in some areas of her life - eye rolling terror etc.

Last night I had to threaten to take toys away () to get her to take some. Awful.

Anyway, her temp is much better today 38 (after terrible night). She is currently eating ritz crackers and watching the magic roundabout so definitely seems better - although she was like this yesterday then had terrible night so we shall see.

Enid, if I ave to take medicine I have dru heaves (even now as an adult). It is the texture of it going down that does it for me!!!!! (so BJs for dh are right out )

Try mixing it into a fromage frais, works a treat with my ds

brill idea about fromage frais - bought some heavily sugared madagascar ones yesterday will offer now as she is eating a bit.

Upside of being a food fascist is that it is a real treat having things like that in our house

hope she doesnt end up feeling that way about BJ's - I would so like her to keep a man
