Your mum is talking nonsenseSad

I have no idea what causes boils but I am sure its none of those things.

Ignore your mum and hope it gets better soon.

Iggly · 29/10/2011 19:13

I had one recently.

I'm pregnant but my fighting weight is 9 stone, I shower everyday and am "all bump" IYSWIM. have also had them when not pregnant. it's usually an ingrown hair.

Tell your mum to get lost. In the politest way possible Grin

Ex-DH had a once-in-a-lifetime one in his ear that I got to squeeze. I still have dreams about how good that was.... And he had perfect personal hygiene.

Ok. So no, I don;t really get alot of boils. I am over weight but I do shower... And I feel much better about it thanks guys....

OK. So its been developing for around 2 weeks and I think you're right that it was an ingrown hair but there was no scumness at all. just redness and pain.

Yesterday afternoon i googled adn it suggested a warm compress so I sat ona nice heated pad till bed time....

So..... laid on an old towel.... placed mirror, tissues appropriately and DDDH joined me to help. I gently felt around the golf ball sized swelling but the middle bit was about marble sized. I dmit to nicking it very gently with a on.... at this point DD woke up with a nightmare and I was not so delicately poised DH went to get her. After gentle pressure it popped out and flooded the tissue with dark yellow gunk... followed by blood and clear gunk.... I [as I am a generous wife] scooped this onto end of tweezers so DH could admire when he had finished ressure our DD. I wiped gentl and put on some antibiotic cream.

This morning. It looks like a nipple!!!!!!!!

My eyes! [hshock]

Why did I click on this thread?

PigletJohn · 30/10/2011 22:30

Go to the chemist in the morning and get a jar of Magnesium Sulphate paste. It will dry it up and shrink it so it heals. You will need an absorbent dressing as it draws fluid from the boil, change it several times a day when it gets wet.

It would also be a very good idea to go and see your doc. There is an infection and antibiotics will help clear it up.

It is possible for these things to get rather bad.

Do not let ignorant boil-perverts encourage you to squeeze or poke it. this is more likely to worsen the infection and drive it deeper, and leave a worse scar.

Wash hands carefully after touching it.

schrodingersbat · 30/10/2011 22:33

Too late piglet-she already squeezed it.

Hungrydragon · 30/10/2011 22:34

As a ignorant boil-pervert with no qualifications what so ever can I advise against putting mag Sulphate on a open wound, as you have already opened it. It hurts, a lot.

Other than that Johns advice is sound, if rather rude Wink

sprinkles77 · 30/10/2011 22:37

If you have managed to squeeze surgically drain it, ABs are probably not required. A well established boil will have a thick membrane surrounding it which ABs do not penetrate that well. I agree with dressing and hand washing though. Not all infections need ABs especially if you are otherwise well. If it does not settle or they occur frequently I would see your GP though.

I love a boil. Or anything squeezy.

mumblecrumble · 30/10/2011 22:38

Dont worry. I took precautions. And have done LOTS of handwashing....

I didn;t really pop it so much as allow it to drain in a controlled and clean manner.....

Also. UPDATE: it has shrunk back, has scabbed over and is much less painful.

:)

My mum used to get giant boils when there was rationing during wartime and she was super skinny. It could be a vitamin deficiency. I think it's vit B...
