Being tested for ovarian cancer

Saw GP today and I've been fast tracked for a scan and bloods to be taken tomorrow for CA125 (?).

I'm only 28. DS1 is 3.11 and has ASD. DS2 is only 2.7.

I'm so scared

Oh you poor thing. What alerted you? Have you got someone to go with you to the hospital?

I went to see her about something else- I've had a slight cytocele since DS2 was born but haven't had it sorted yet. We got talking about periods etc and I've had the 3 main symptoms for about 8 mths but I've been putting off going as I just thought it was IBS or because everything is not quite right with my bladder etc.

Big family history of cancer and GP has taken it very seriously.

I'm glad your GP has taken your symptoms very seriously and hope that the tests prove negative. I'm glad your DH can go with you. Big hugs.

Please don't panic - easy to say I know. If your CA125 comes back with a high result it is still important not to assume the worst because mine was like that and I didn't have cancer, just some vile infection and a load of cysts. Now 3 years down the line I feel 100% healthier than I have done for years - I did have surgery but made a great recovery.
Please do not google either, it will not cheer you up. Keep breathing and feeling strong xxx

That's reassuring thebestdrummer I'm hoping it's fibroids or cysts or something. I haven't googled, I'm too scared to. Glad that you are feeling healthier. If it is fibroids or something, it must be better for them to find it now rather than later.

Try not to panic, you'll get the bloods back early next week, and some idea of scan result there and then. Benign ovarian cysts are common, so don't be surprised if you've got one on the scan. They will use both tests together with your symptoms and examination to assess your risk. Eight months is a long time, so you'd be likely to be seriously unwell by now if it was anything nasty. Ive read a lot about this recently as I had a twisted cyst and was investigated with scan and CA125. They have since operated because it was large,solid and twisting. I'm waiting for the biopsy result although the surgeon said she's 99.9%sure it'll be ok.

Just try to distract yourself in the meantime on silly threads on here and don't read the internet, it's a scary place.

Yes, as drummer said, a high CA125 can be due to a lot of things, it's just part of the picture.

I have a raised CA125 and a solid cyst on my ovary but they are pretty sure it's benign[can't be definite until biopsied] I have all the symptoms you have. Ovarian cancer is very rare at your age your GP is just doing the right thing.

I got referred as they'd seen a number of cysts on my ovary. I made them do blood tests, which have just come back 'within normal range'. I was very frightened too..convinced myself I had ovarian cancer..virtually planning my own funeral... out of my mind with worry. Let us know what happens. Good luck x

Ovarian cancer is very very rare un younger people. cysts are very common. It's good that your dris taking care of you, but I'd say it is very unlikely you have anything cancerous.

I had a cyst- I am 56 and it lasted for 18 months and I was scanned every 3 months and had blood tests, as I am prime age for OC- post meno.

In the end it went away without any treatment.

Thanks Amelia. she said as my DM, and 5 of my maternal aunts and GM have had breast cancer, the risk of cervical or ovarian is higher than normal for my age.

Had a call from the hospital today, the scan is booked in for Monday.

Yes maybe- but higher than "normal" means your actual risk is still very low.

I don't know the stats but say the risk was 1 in 1000 for women of your age ( nad I think it's higher than that anywa,) your risk even if doubled by your family history would be 2 in 1000.

Hope you manage to distract yourself this weekend, and not worry too much. I also have a strong family history on both sides for breast and other ca, the consultant gave me advice on early screening. There are some genetic tests which may be useful from that point of view.

Hope everything goes ok on monday octonauts, it is so good that your GP has taken you seriously and you are being tested quickly.

I think your GP is acting very appropriately but hopefully this will all be over very soon with nothing to worry about on the ovarian cancer side. Has the GP suggested discussing your breast cancer risk too though as that will also be raised?

Well, it all went really well.

She said I've got a cyst and apparently, PCOS. I asked the doctor about that a few months ago and he said that because I had kids it was unlikely.

So, I'm very relieved and very very grateful for all your support ladies.

So glad to hear that it's nothing really serious! And hope you get treated for the cyst and PCOS quickly.
