I know I'm drinking too much but my problem is at this stage the actual habit more than the amount.
however I know it's a very slippery slope and really want to stop drinking in the week without it being an issue.
Presently I cannot wait to have that first glass , always when I start to make tea / get in from work .
I,ve started not going to the gym in the evenings so I can have a drink instead so I know it's a problem.
I drink half a bottle most nights.
would really appreciate some actual tips on stopping the habit.
If I,m out or working it doesn't even cross my mind so I think being somewhere else or busy might help until I've broken the habit. However with 4 dc I can't just elope every evening !
tips would be really helpful tho.
I gave up smoking with support on here.
have been a coward and name changed sorry . X

I have stopped drinking altogether, practically overnight. This was because I was diagnosed with an illness and have lots of tests continuously, and I didnt want the alchohol levels showing up or anyone questioning me.

And I do feel much better for it (illness apart). I dont get headaches any more and dont have the continous sick feeling I always had

Maybe start watering down the wine first, by adding a soft drink, so it looks like you are drinking a full glass, but it isnt. You have got into a habit and you need to break the habit, because you dont actually need the drink, but it is an easy and pleasant option.
You could try (yuk) the alcohol free wine as a start, so mentally you are having wine but it isnt as harmful.

Sorry I cant help you through this, but I know you can do it.

Timetochange70 · 15/08/2011 12:24

Thanks . I will buy some soda and water it down but go for every other night without then would like to not drink at all in the week without even thinking aboutit.

Hi. Did you suffer from constant headaches like i am now? Not too full on but niggling head pain. I too have cut down on the wine, but blimey, 3 kids on school hols, not easy!

AuntieMonica · 15/08/2011 16:10

i'll join you, we (DH and i) have a rule to only have wine at weekends...but this has turned into a bit of a joke, any excuse and there's a bottle open

i don't think i drink a lot, we opened a bottle on saturday, and there was still a glass each left last night, but we also opened another and finished that Blush

soda, ice and a slice of lemon is a nice drink, it even looks like an alcoholic one Wink

when you starting?

i'm starting tonight. no more drinks on a 'school night' for me.

Fakeblondie · 31/10/2011 09:28

Haven't been on here for ages and prob another thread somewhere now !
Anyway I never stuck to my aim of reducing my wine and have been drinking tbh about half a bottle every night.Have realised I absolutely need to change my attitude to alcohol and take some self control.Last night I didn't have any wine and while I would have loved some whilst in the kitchen cooking I drank stupid amounts of tea and got lots done! I have the support of DH and we are not going to drink during the week and only fri sat or fri sun work dependant.
anyone else in the right frame of mind to join me and stick to it cos would really love some company x

Fakeblondie · 31/10/2011 09:31

Sorry wrong thread but same idea ! anyone ?

anniedunne · 01/11/2011 10:58

I'll join you. I've noticed my levels slowly creeping up and I don't like it. I drink half a bottle every night, sometimes a little more. It's too much. I find if I can get through to about 8/8.30 without opening any wine, the craving passes and I'm fine. I'd like to break the habit of midweek drinking and maybe just enjoy at weekends. Any company welcome !

ladywithnomanors · 01/11/2011 11:10

I'll join you Smile.
I don't really drink much in the week but if there's wine here I'll drink it. However on a Friday and Saturday night I drink at least 2 bottles of wine. It's not even social as DP doesn't drink in the house.

After waking up yesterday feeling awful - I had a bottle of red on Sunday night I vowed that I want to stop drinking for a while. I'd like to stop completely until Christmas time and then have an occasional tipple but we'll see how it goes !

saythatagain · 01/11/2011 11:11

I'm in the process of doing this - having a drink Fri, Sat & Sun, along with dh. we drink fruit juice and tea now mid week. I agree with regards it being habit forming. Anyway, its a lot better when getting up the next morning and the money saving is quite immense too Blush.

cakesandale · 01/11/2011 11:37

Hats off to all of you for trying!

(Hello SeeingStars Smile)

DH and I cut back a lot. We like the taste of alcohol and so found most low and no alcohol versions of drinks a bit yuk. However, if you fall into the same category as us, and if you like cider, Sainsbury's do a great own brand low alcohol cider that is only 1 per cent and tastes like the Real Thing. The other stores probably do a similar thing. We find that, on a night when we really fancy a drink (and they do get fewer), one of these each is a good alternative.

WentworthMillerMad · 01/11/2011 18:05

I am in! I don't drink at all in the week but the thought of not drinking at the weekend is inconceivable to me! I can drink 3 bottles over a fri, sat and sun and it is showing on the scales! Just started the dukan diet so am
Thinking calories so am off it until December. Even then I will cut back / drink gin and slimlines etc!
It's pure habit for me and I do spend some weekends feeling groggy!

Fakeblondie · 02/11/2011 13:59

Fab!
well I didn't drink sun or mon but was out for a very special occasion last night and had half a bottle with the girls .Will refrain tonight and Thurs. I must admit just not drinking for 2 nights I got so much more done and felt better !

MrsJoshHomme · 07/11/2011 11:58

I'd like to join in if everyone is still trying to cut down?? I have always enjoyed a drink, and never really thought about it much really. But in the last two years have started to worry about the health implications, despite this I still go through phases of on / off the wine. I would say that when off I am pretty much down to 2 nights and a reduced quantity, this usually when I am trying to lose weight. But once I have lost some weight it only takes an 'occasion' like christmas or holidays to set me back to drinking daily again. Currently am just trying to get off the 'on' side off daily drinking. I managed 3 days last week. This week I want to aim for 4-5 really. And I also want to reduce the amount when I do drink.

So I have started tracking again on ww - only snag is there is three quarters bottle of red open - I really don't know if I can be strong enough not to drink it later. Sad If it were only a small amount I would probably tip it down the sink.

WentworthMillerMad · 07/11/2011 21:48

Mrs josh I am exactly the same. I have not drunk since October 30th I
As I have put on weight and am doing the dukan diet. Am finding it much easier than I thought.
Not going to drink til December and then going to cut back from my daily drinking!

ledkr · 07/11/2011 22:06

This is so weird.I decided yesterday to stop the wine.I have crept up to about half a bottle most nights and its not helping me to lose weight, get up in night or early with the baby or get the motivation to exercise.

I too have had a headache and sicky feeling most days.

I like to drink a glass when im cooking, baby is miserable at that time so it takes the edge off.

Tonight i has a glass of rose and felt so irritated after as i couldnt be bothered to read with dd1 or listen to her chatter, Felt ashamed.

I have no plan other than not to buy it and maybe use the time to exercise or have an early night.
I may well not even drink at weekends for a bit too.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 07/11/2011 22:23

ledkr, sounds like how I was when my two were younger. DS2 was a nightmare baby and I used to be desperate for a glass of wine during the evening when he was whingeing till bedtime. Now they are older and DS2 is not so bad and DH and I have gone from having a glass or two most weeknights and more at weekends, to having nothing during the week.

Only problem is, it's been creeping up again. It starts if we have a couple of leftover bottles from a party or whatever - we don't seem to be able to leave it there till the weekend. Then I'll get a taste for it and the next time I'm in the supermarket I'll pick up a couple more bottles. Then if it's there in the house I will be tempted to crack one open, even if DH is working away. I don't even "need" it to ease the stress of DS2 anymore like we used to because he's older and much easier. But for me, it's the habit of liking a glass with my meal of an evening that's become the problem. And then because there's some left in the bottle, I'll pour another half glass while I'm sitting with the kids relaxing after tea. And I'll finish the bottle the next night because I don't want it to "go off" LOL!

I don't think the amount I could drink during the week would be a problem as such, it's just that the waking up with a headache and feeling out of sorts for the first couple of hours of the day seems to affect me more the older I get.

DH is pretty stubborn and if his solution is just to say to himself "Right - no drinking during the week for me". Which works for him, but then he drinks a lot at the weekend and so undoes his good work!

I think the answer for me is just to not buy any wine during the week AT ALL. If it's not in the house then I can't drink it. I also then really enjoy and appreciate my couple of glasses on a Friday and Saturday night, probably much more than if I'd drunk most week nights. Seems to work for me......until the next party or Christmas or whatever and then it creeps up during the week again.

Sorry.....that was a bit waffly really.... Grin

Fakeblondie · 08/11/2011 09:14

Hi all,
Going really well here.
Not drinking at all in the week and the benefits are far outweighing the lovely glass of wine moment when i get in from work !
Im free to do so much more ! Im spending LOTS more time with dc-reading stories and bathtime . Im going to the spa for a swim every other night instead of poring another large glass of wine and starting to winge ! Im actually watching a bit of TV which i cant normally concentrate on.
Its nice looking forward to Fridays glass too and when sat came even tho i really enjoyed it i drank far less as didnt like the feeling of getting whoozy !
I am so releived because i thought maybe i was become a little dependant-in fact i think do / did have an issue as was choosing to drink over evening committments if it meant i had to drive.
Anyways-well done all of us.
Whats everyone drinking instead ?
I`m well into redbush (with milk ;-0 )

snailoon · 08/11/2011 09:28

Timetochange how is it going? Are you still around?
I feel like I should cut back to only weekends also.
Anniedunne- I find, like you that if I get to dinner time w/o a glass, I don't want one any more. How is it going for you?

anniedunne · 08/11/2011 19:16

Well snailoon...could be better. Haven't managed an alcohol free evening since joining this thread. However have cut down overall and feel a bit better for it. Aiming for a very little tonight (bad day+long story=need it) and zero tomorrow so please wish me luck...

MrsJoshHomme · 08/11/2011 20:51

Well, last night I had a magners and half a bottle of red. I hated myself this morning, I felt bloated and my stomach was churning and I felt tired. So today is my day one, and I am going to take it one day at a time. From past experience I know that I will be able to manage to do tonight , wed, thu and possibly fri but will I be able to go through the weekend? I hope so.

WentworthMillerMad · 08/11/2011 20:58

Good luck
I am walking for an hour in the evening, very well lit main road, up and down with my I pod! The drinking lots of mint tea. I am sleeping so much better, no hangovers. I did some early morning gardening on sat as I was up so early. reading lots as having early nights and watching professional master chef!
I am saving money so am about to treat my self to some decent fake flowers!
Not missing The wine as much as I thought I would and feeling quite proud of myself.

MrsJoshHomme · 09/11/2011 09:33

Morning all hope everyone is well,

I managed to be alcohol free last night and feel much better than yesterday, not quite perfect but alot better. So, I will also not be drinking tonight.

PinkCustard · 09/11/2011 14:49

Hello, I've decided from today to cut out the wine too. I'd cut right back recently, but had 2 glasses of wine and a vodka (!) last night and had that familiar gurgling/bloated stomach all night and slept really badly as a result. Feeling tired and sicky today, so that's it, no more booze for me! We're also TTC so that's another good reason to give up. I'm usually fine in the week but might struggle come Saturday, but it's only out of habit.

Keep going everyone Smile

BarbieDahl · 09/11/2011 20:22

Hi everyone, I have also decided to cut down on wine drinking. I'm exactly the same - just a glass or three two in the evening, but it's a habit i fining it hard to break.

I haven't had a drink now since saturday and am feeling very virtuous. I even managed to refuse a glass of cold white sauvignon (wipes dribble from chin)
that dp opened this evening.

Tbh I don't feel any different and i'm drinking water instead.
I have also been inspired from another thread from someone who lost 5lbs in 5 days when she stopped drinking.
Good luck everyone

minxofmancunia · 09/11/2011 20:38

Hello everyone, I'm trying to do this, with variable results. I try not to have wine Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday but I think I'm still drinking too much.

I've gone from a couple of glasses a night to a couple of bottles over Fri/Sat/Sun!! Blush.

If I have "binged" I don't feel any better for not drinking, in fact i'm worried sometimes I've got alcohol withdrawal, no wine last night and headachy, blurry, tired day for me, often after 2 days abstinence I feel even worse!!! Also v agitated at night, can't settle, but one of the reasons i want to stop/cut back is to improve my sleep. And with or without wine my concentration is terrible!

Any tips??
