DS 10Mths Just Burnt his Hand!!! Please Help??

Hi, my ds has just picked a stone up from the fire, he has only started crawling for the first time today so feel really guilty.

Please can anyone suggest what i should put on his hand???

Cold water for ten minutes

Cold water - NOT ice as this can stick tot he burn. Keep it under the cold tap for 10 minute or so. Call NHS direct for more advice.

It's best if the cold water is running, rather than in a bowl - put his hand under the cold tap for at least 10 minutes.

How badly burnt is it? Run it under cold water. Don't put ointments or butter or anything stupid on it - it'll heat up and cook his hand.

go up to a&e at local hospital

the burn is on the cushion bit of his hand just below his fingers, ran the water on it and let him hold a cold can, i have given him some pain relief also and he seems settled, although his hand is very red??

At least that, perhaps longer. Basically until it starts to cool down, ie if it still hurts after 10 mins, put it back under. If the burn has broken the skin, get him seen to. Whatever you do, DON"T put anything on it other than cool water, or if it is bad, and you need to take him to be seen, wrap it up in a clean plastic bag. NHS Direct can help if you want futher advice.

If you are worried call NHS direct and ask their advice or go down to a+e. TBH though if its not blistered then I doubt they'll do any more than you can at home.

thanks for the advice do you suggest i should just now keep on giving him something cold to hold, he isn't crying and is infact laughing at the moment with my dh.

However it red and looks sore although the skin isn't broken, I feel so guilty!!!!!!

How long did you run it under water for? That's better than giving him something cold to hold - if it's too cold it might stick to his skin, or it'll just warm up and not do much good.

if the burn is bigger than a 10pence peice then seek medical advice, i think you should go to a+e/clinic anyway as the its the palm of the hand, and due to the movements of the hand it may not heal easily by itself.

has it blistered at all?

oh and get a fireguard.

i will get a fireguard although thats doesn't help me right now!

his hand isn't blistered just red and he still seems to be using it no problem?

in the morning if it has cracked/blistered then get it checked. i have no idea how hot these stones get, but just remember from first aid training that if a burn is bigger than size of 10pence piece then it should be checked out by medical staff.

if you get his hand into a cup of cold water and leave it there for minimum of 10mins, then do so. but dont wrap his hand in anything due to lint sticking to the skin. if it does become weepy then again seek medical advise.

ms ds2 burnt his hand on the steam vapouriser late in the afternoon. Came up red and held under water for a few mins as he wouldn't let us keep it there. It was red but fine when we went to bed. Next morning I saw it had blistered and the skin broken (small blister size). My dh talked me into putting a bandaid on and it would be alright. Next day was worse and went to doctor. Found out following info: a blister is a 2nd degree burn and always needs medical attention. If blister breaks it is at risk of infection and skin dying. Burns need to be put under water for at least 10 mins and then cover with a suitable dressing as this will stop the pain. Apparently the air is what causes the pain of a burn to continue. My ds was burnt between two fingers and could have lost some movement if I had not got medical attention. We ended up having it dressed everyday for a week and came very close to needing a skin graft as the skin was close to dying because I had left it .

My dd was 9 months when she grabbed a pipe at the bottom of a radiator. I know all about the guilt, I had no idea it would be so hot.

I took her straight to the childrens' hospital and they sprayed on some stuff that heals burns (can't remember the name, began with F)and dressed it. We had to go back every day for 5 days to have the dressing changed.

The thing is, although I expected a bad night with her, she actually slept well and was happy, even though it was a severe burn. She didn't even mind having the dressings changed.

It healed much quicker than I expected and didn't leave a scar.

Damn.... missed this one - if you get a burn that doesn't break the skin put toothpaste on it. Works miracles. Don't know how or why.

he seems ok although it as blistered quite bad i think we are going to take him now to get it checked after some of the scary stories on this thread will keep you informed

Hope it goes well. All will be fine even if he needs a bit of treatment. Guilt is what mums do best . I felt guilty partly because it happened but mostly because I should have taken him straight away. Let us know how he is.

cold water then lavender essential oil and/or aloe vera gel unconventional but the best minor burn treatment ive ever come across hth

ps probably not much use now but lavender oil can stop blisters really sorry hope you and your ds are ok

How is DS, Janbo?

Hi all, well took ds to local children's hospital who dressed it accordingly and referred us to the burns unit where we went today, they bursted his blister (poor thing was very painful as they had to scrape them away with alcohol to ensure it was clean!!.) and then redressed it and we have to go back again tomorrow, I think they envisage it to be approx 2 weeks before it begins to heal. Thank you all for giving your advice because like i said, it didn't bother him so I again wrongly presumed it would be ok but obviously you fellow mn'ers were right. The doctor explained how babies do tend to have exceptionally high pain thresholds.
