When/if you put your child on fish oils would you tell their teacher?

I have just started ds51/2 on Eye Q fish oils. I cant decide whether to tell his teacher to look out for any improvement in a few weeks or so or just to sit back and wait and see if they tell me his concentration has improved. Either way it wont change the outcome in reality but want to be sure that if there is an improvement the school really does see it rather than imagine it iyswim. Chances are ds has already told them himself though I guess.

No I wouldn't - might raise their expectations. Perhaps ask if she has noted an improvement in a few months' time.

jalopy · 12/11/2005 15:27

I'd sit back, wait and see.

Blandmum · 12/11/2005 15:42

I wouldn't. It will be a much better test if the see an improvement 'blind' IYSWIM

Pepsi - does the Eye Q stuff taste horrid or smell unpleasant in anyway (trying to get DS1 taking something like that but he seems quite resistant to the taste not that I blame him).

Anyway I wouldn't tell teachers. let them think he's just turned into a model pupil all by himself, I would.

My dd have fish oils and have other vitamins in sometimes and although I don't mind their teachers knowing, I don't tell them, in the same way that I don't tell my boss what I take - it just isn't something that comes up!

pfer....When we tried it when he was 4 we used the sachets which are filled with tiny balls and mixed them in jam, we never did it properly so could say if they had an effect or not. This time he is 51/2 so I thought I try the tablets...they look just like a normal cod liver oil tablet if you have ever taken them and he swallows them with liquid. I was totally amazed that he took them with no problems at all. He has to take 6 a day for 12 weeks and then it goes down to 2. We have tried the liquid but I found it made the drink taste awful and it floats on top. I tasted it myself to see what I was going to put him through and I knew I wouldnt drink it. The tablets in Boots are £7.99 for 60 but at the moment you can get them on 3 for 2.

Forgot to say that you can smell the fish oils in the tablets but for some reason ds hasnt been bothered about this.

Yes, the Boots milkshake one is easy for them to take isn't it? DS likes that.

fimac1 · 13/11/2005 15:36

We didn't tell (my 5 year old dd) teacher and after a month she mentioned dd improved concentration idependently! She is still on it now age nearly 11

fimac1 · 13/11/2005 15:38

We started out with EYEQ oil which they hated, went on to the EYEQ capsules but now they take MoreEpa capsules - twice the ammount of epas in each capsule than EYEQ and farmed from deep sea fish so very pure - google on MoreEpa minis, I buy them off the web

collision · 13/11/2005 16:32

how old do they have to be before they can take them?

PeachyPlumPudding · 13/11/2005 21:33

Depends on the preparation, I gave before age on bottle (half dose) but that was on advice of a nutritionist.

We went to a parent-evening to find out how she was getting on. What an amazing improvement! I said "It must be the Clever Medicine we're giving her". The response I got was a wink and a nod..."Yes, those fish oils are magic aren't they?"!!!!I give it to all my kids now!!!

kid · 15/11/2005 20:36

I've started giving this to DD. She needs all the help she can get to concentrate! I haven't said anything to her teacher, I want to see if we notice and improvement first.
Poor DD, she hates the taste of it. I get her to take it then quickly gulp down some water. I tried mixing it with some milk and it was still just as bad! It was the strawberry flavoured one I got her, it doesn't taste anything like strawberries!

Oh no Essbee
Why do kids misbehave at the worst possible time, I'm sure they want to see how far they can push us.

DS threw his lunch bag on the floor as he came out of nursery, right in front of his teacher. I calmly told him to pick it up and he screamed NO. I just said fine and started to walk away, he soon went back and got it! Its like a never ending battle!

He obviously didn't want to say hello! Hope he continues to calm down with the help of the fish oils.

I wonder if I told DD why I was giving it to her she might believe they work and try harder in school? I've just told her they are vitamins.

I bet the other child and mum you heard today are not perfect. Didn't they notice you then? I would have been tempted to let them know you had heard what they were saying just to make them feel uncomfortable.
At least he is doing well at school, he can work on his social skills but it would be much harder to catch up academically.
