My knee is fine til I kneel on it, then POW! Arrrghgh

I have no idea what this is. But knee is fine, pain free in day to day stuff. No symptoms and nothing physical to see.

Then I kneel down and it's like a red hot poker shoved inside my knee, gawd it hurts so much!

Yes I know I could just not kneel down, but with two DC's who like tickling and wrestling, we roll around lots. I kneel occasionally on hard tiled floor at work, for maybe a second at a time to get a file out, but the instant my knee touches the floor it's agony.

Any ideas?

It could be a trapped nerve, a little bursitis. Is there a visible bruise? I would say see your doctor, but I had knee problems for a short time and they just x-rayed me and said there was nothing to see!

No, no bruises.. Nothing to see, that's what is strange!

I don't mean to worry you but is your calf at all swollen?

This was the first symptom of DVT that I had... Please keep an eye on it x

I'm a gp and although its hard to tell without a bit more infprmation and examining you, this is the first thing that comes to mind.

See your gp :) as they will be able to help you more

I had housemaid's knee. It was the first thing i thought of when I read this thread. But my knee swelled up and I couldn't bend it at all after a while.

The first time it happened, I knelt down and felt such a sharp pain, I really thought I'd knelt on a drawing-pin.

that's what I thought too BEAUTIFUL and name change, I've had it too but no swelling just the same symptoms as op, had to have physio,

I had something like this and it got better after a month or so of no kneeling. As soon as it stopped happening I fell over and landed with all my weight on that knee, got it again.

This time I think I will go to the GP.

I get this in my left knee. I find it's worse if I kneel on a hard floor, but OKish on carpet. It does tend to go away if I remember not to kneel on it. Not been to the GP about it as I try to avoid her.

No swelling, but it does tend to 'lock' from time to time when I'm walking - I suspect I may have done something to the cartilage.

Could it be your kneecap dislocating? It's quite common for that to happen and it's incredibly painful but then goes away again quickly as the kneecap pops back on.

No good us all speculating what it could be!! Get thee to the gp's.

My knee was like this, I put off going to the dr's for 8 months. Turns out I had a torn cartiledge and had to have keyhole surgery.

Torn cartiledge? After the fall I took I wouldn't be surprised.

I love these threads where everyone speculates about a minor ailment. There was a good one a while ago where the op had mystery dog breath .

There's no swelling, just bloody knacks when I kneel on it. No swelling of calf either.
Am just a bit wary of going to doctors, as I had a very painful breast lump 6 weeks ago. I got an appt with specialist within 2 weeks (NHS is fab sometimes) but the painful lump had gone, so I don't want to mess the doctors about for something very minor.
Lump now returns monthly (but not at time of the month) and goes away again so its classed as "cyclical".
(Really, I think my knee pain is very minor compared to the lump scare.)

Well I will make an appointment with the GP and let you know what she says. I haven't been to the GP for me in years.

I have a similar problem & I know exactly how I did it, getting up of the sofa with a sleeping dd so not using my hands as leverage.

The problem is I'm mostly symptomless except when I am sitting cross legged (which do a lot bfing on the sofa) & occasionally in bed when my legs are bent. But if I went to the dr they wouldn't be able to tell that anything was wrong.

I blame kneeling too much (two young DC plus I'm an older Mum) and getting up and down with nearly 4 yr old in arms. To some extent, it comes from my lower back too - when I feel generally 'twisted' out of shape, iyswim, the knee pain gets worse.

Nurofen and no kneeling for a day or two?

I finally went to see my GP, she asked if it locked or clicked, and if I had any problems walking up stairs. If you have any of these things there is a problem, apparently. As I didn't she suggested I had internal bruising, and that it could take a couple of months to get better.

I have avoided kneeling on that knee and it is slowly improving.

The physio might be able to help you more quickly than a GP, although you'd have to pay to get seen quickly. For things like this I do think they have a better specialised knowledge.

I have the same problem but after 2 weeks of minor ache it's now getting worse, pain lingers for a while after kneeling and I'm getting worried. Going to gp tomorrow.

Sounds like Osgood-Sclatter, a bone spur at the base of the knee. I developed it after training for a 1/2 marathon. Look at your two knees in the mirror. If one of them has a small lump under the kneecap (usually toward the outside of the knee) then it is Osgood-Sclatter. An x-ray could also confirm the bone spur.

Google "Infrapatellar Saphenous Neuralgia." Sounds like it is what you are all describing. I have have had it off and on since my teens. I am now 55. When I was a kid I fell and cracked my patella on a concrete slab. It developed a spot which, if pressed by clothing, like slacks or pantihose would produce the most agonising kneecap pain. I have a flare-up right now, though this time it is more localized to the front of the patella where the tendon attaches. It doesn't hurt much with my leg extended but if my knee is flexed it can be very sharply sore to touch and kneeling on that knee is impossible at the moment. It is a neuralgia, sadly and there isn't a whole lot one can do, though there are some nerve blocks docs can perform to get it to back off. My doc said that the possibility of scar tissue making the problem worse was very real - so for now, I am putting up with it. Good luck

I think you are missing the posters point. I have exactly the same thing. There is no pain or obvious bumps swelling or other indication 99% of the time. Only when I knee in a certain way in fact the pain is excruciating like I impinged a nerve directly. The pain lasts for 10 seconds or so and is sharp and intense. Then it's gone. No problem until I knee exactly like that again. It seems to me it must be something to do with a nerve and either a dislocation of the nerve or spur impinging on the nerve or somehow an exposed nerve possibly near the kneecap so when pressure is placed on the kneecap in a certain way it hits it. I have had it for years I think and mentioned it recently to my trainer at the club. He massaged the tendons around the knee and I could actually kneel on the knee then without pain pretty much it seemed but after a week or two it is now worse than ever. I wonder if I was kneeling more and irritated it or if something he did massaging it could have caused a problem. Anyway, I guess it's time to see a doctor. Any thoughts?

For a week or so I thought it had to do with the tendons and maybe buildup of some tension because the trainer did help it. Even if the tendons are related it is definitely nerve related though I think.
