I am suffering the agonies of toothache and would like to be able to safely overdose on painkillers.
Does anyone have any knowledge of what i can do safely?

Currently i am taking

  • 500mg anti-biotic. one 3 times a day
  • co-codamol two 4 times aday (not to exceed 8 in 24 hours)
  • 50mg diclofenac/misoprost 200 mcg one 3 times a day (no more than 3 in 24 hours)

what could i safely take more of?
what are the effects of taking extra?

thnaks

Personally, I don't think you should take more without professional advice.

SoupDragon · 04/09/2005 12:40

Can you add either paracetamol or ibuprofen or aspirin I guess? Depends what's in the other painkillers.

Kelly1978 · 04/09/2005 12:40

You can't safely take extra anything. What strength co-codamol are you on? Can you get a higher dose one?

Kelly1978 · 04/09/2005 12:41

co-codamol has paracetamol in it, soupy

AuntyQuated · 04/09/2005 12:41

the diclofenac is similar to ibuprofen i think but i've lost the leaflet

nhs direct say go to casualty wtf? with toothache?

Well, they could prescribe you something, maybe. If the pain is so bad you want to take more painkillers than you are, you really need it seeing to.

AuntyQuated · 04/09/2005 12:42

kelly, not really clear on cocodamol - it says 30/500

Kelly1978 · 04/09/2005 12:43

diclofenac is an antiflamatory (cant spell it) nt a pain killer

Kelly1978 · 04/09/2005 12:44

30mg codeine, 500mg paracetamol, means you are about at your limit for both

AuntyQuated · 04/09/2005 12:44

could i take ibruprofen and diclofenac?

OP posts:
AuntyQuated · 04/09/2005 12:45

what would happen if i took more than 8 in 24 hours

Kelly1978 · 04/09/2005 12:46

diclofanac has ibuprofen in it, jsut remembered. But you can go up to 400 mg of ibuprofen, so you might be safe to take some more.

SenoraPostrophe · 04/09/2005 12:47

Oh AQ I remember thinking exactly the same thing when I had toothache.

You can take full dose of ibuprofen in addition to paracetemol/codeine. Do not go over the stated dose for paracetemol - v dangerous.

Suzyfloozypuddingandpie · 04/09/2005 12:48

Be careful who you take advice from. I don't want to disrespect anyone here, but you can do yourself some damage. From an ex nurse. x

Kelly1978 · 04/09/2005 12:48

possible liver damage, nausea, heartburn, stomach problems, headache, dizziness, or sleepiness

SenoraPostrophe · 04/09/2005 12:48

also swish your mouth out with warm salty water - that helped very slightly for me.

SenoraPostrophe · 04/09/2005 12:49

...and clove oil.

AuntyQuated · 04/09/2005 12:49

thanks suzy- i had thought of that. but the general opinion seems to be that i can't take any more

OP posts:
Kelly1978 · 04/09/2005 12:49

clove oil, calgel? def dont take ne more paracetamol.

AuntyQuated · 04/09/2005 12:51

probabl;y a thick question, but what about gargling with soluble aspirin. it works for sore thraots, will it work on teeth.

i have tried clove oil but it didn't work; however my neighbour gave me it and i think it is older than me!

will try salt water

OP posts:
AuntyQuated · 04/09/2005 12:53

OK, no more paracetemol

the pain is no longer in the tooth, more in my temple and my loweer jaw

OP posts:
Kelly1978 · 04/09/2005 12:53

but then you will be takign in aspirin, and I really don't have a clue about aspirin with those combinations,a nd I wouldn't risk it. Toothache is bloody horrible, I know. I've overdosed out of desperation, but it isn't a good idea.

Kelly1978 · 04/09/2005 12:54

cold compress?

Suzyfloozypuddingandpie · 04/09/2005 12:54

Salt water a good idea.

AuntyQuated · 04/09/2005 12:56

Will try some of these out.
i'm off for a shower now, roll on tomorrow but dentist says he can't do much until infection has gone. i've been on the anti-biotics nearly 6 days and it is worse than when i started.
