broken my nose! and cracked my head and eye and broken my bathroom sink...

...and I have to go BACK to A&E, as the junior Dr got in such a tizz about my head injury he forgot to refer me to the ENT clinic.

I was on the floor of the bathroom picking up some toys with my children either side of me and i lifted my head up, and found the solid glass shower screen was over the top of my head. I found this out with my head and smashed my head onto it at such a force the whole screen came crashing down, into the sink right in front of me which broke into several large pieces, one of which presumably then flew and hit my in the face. I do not recall that bit clearly as I saw the glass falling and was starting agast at this glass about to fall onto my daughter. When i saw she was not hit but the sink was, i then realised as it had hit my head (did not realise it was that hard) i realised my son was on the other side of me so immediately went to him. luckily not a scratch.

DH came charging in, we got the kids out and while this was happening I could feel a trickle down my head and my nose start throbbing and I started shaking! I had split my eye and my nose was out on one side!! Shock

Checked the kids over thoroughly, DD had a little cut on her toe, that was all, and DS was fine, we settled them, put them to bed, then my friend dorve me to A&E where they messed around for quite a while as I had clear fluid come out of my nose, dark eyes and raised blood pressure so they ummed and arred about scanning me, eventually let me go hom at almost midnight.

Do you think I will ok to drive back up there? i feel ok, well, i now have spotted a deep gauge on my back where the shower panel fell forwards, and also down, so the base slid down my back, but that is fine, my head hurts but only where it has been bashed hard in two places and my nose hurts but only as it was smacked so hard.

But, bloody hell. I was only clearing the floor in order to make it safe so the kids did not slip on it when they went in the bath. DS was going in a bucket bath on the floor right where i was sat Shock. It is almost like this happened to stop something worse happening, does that make sense or am I more concussed than I thought, it could have gone so horribly horribly worse than that, the bit that hit me, was so so close to DS, it could have killed him, he is only a baby.

Should I go into work? or straight to A&E as they said I have to go back in for the referral. Shock

A&E /out of hours GP and get a taxi! I'm sure if you go to your GP they'll just send you up the hospital anyway.

Take care.

scurryfunge · 13/09/2010 08:59

Gosh, poor you.....sounds like a nasty accident. No one would criticise you for taking time off work. Take someone with you when you return to A and E and ask them to drive you.

PavlovtheCat · 13/09/2010 09:00

I have to go back to A&E, i called them and they said they will leave my paperwork out and to up again. DH will drive me no problem, but we have the baby and DH will sulk about it and complain about it all the way, as he already has been doing in anticipation of this, and what a waste of time yesterday was for my friend who was there with me the whole time! (i pointed out it was not a waste of time, they confirmed i was ok, and that was enough for me). If I go back on my own, i can read my book Wink.

Eleison · 13/09/2010 09:00

How awful. You poor thing. You sound still very shocked. I'm sure you shouldn't go into work, and I think you should go straight back to A&E. Don't drive yourself. Get a lift, taxi, whatever.

Eleison · 13/09/2010 09:01

x-post. Tell DH to stop complaining! Blimmin heck.

PavlovtheCat · 13/09/2010 09:01

scurry problem with work is, this whole budget cut, redundancies etc, i wanted to have a clean sick record so I don't get on the 'hit list' so to speak, it is clear so far, but have only been back from ML for one month!

OP posts:
Snorbs · 13/09/2010 09:02

That sounds dreadful. Poor you. Get DH to drop you off there and then give him a call a bit later to pick you up. If that means you have to sit there with your book and a cup of coffee for a while, well, that won't be so bad will it?

I hope you feel a bit better soon!

scurryfunge · 13/09/2010 09:03

I think if you turn up to work they will advise you to go home again. Your health has to come first surely?

PavlovtheCat · 13/09/2010 09:03

eleison i am shocked, i keep going over how much worse it could have been, and I am almost grateful for my broken nose and split eye, as it means it was not them. My children are fine, DD was quite shocked straight after as she saw all the blood on my face, and said she did not think the dr could fix me, bless her, but she went to bed knowing i was fine and I went to see her when i came home to show her i was all ok. She is happy as now, back to normal.

ShowOfHands · 13/09/2010 09:05

Get dh to drive you please.

And in the nicest possible way, thank goodness it fell on you. The kitchen cupboard with all the crockery in it fell off the wall once onto my Mum's head while my brother and I were by her side. Hitting her head diverted it in its path and we were fine. It would have seriously injured or killed us otherwise. Somebody's watching over your children, eh?

Take care. I'm surprised you're not in shock. You sound so calm.

DaftApeth · 13/09/2010 09:07

Definitely don't crive yourself.

Get dh to drop you off as Snorbs suggests, or get a cab if he is really going to be an arse about taking you!

Hope you feel better. Take a couple fo days off work too.

PavlovtheCat · 13/09/2010 09:07

showofhands i think that probably is shock ! I feel a bit tearful. And I completely agree, thank god it hit me and my tough nut head.

The shower screen is not going to be replaced. We are going to get a shower curtain, even though it is not so pretty. We never liked that glass panel anyway, always felt dangerous, but never got around to getting rid of it. This was obviously some warning, reminding us of that job we never did.

The sink though, so surprised it broke so badly, but guess the glass was heavy and it hit it edge on if that makes sense. And it was a new, expensive sink!

He will drive me, but mutter and moan about it! not about me, about the hospital not doing the referral in the first place. I am just pleased i did not break my skull and damage the lining of my brain, which was what they were worried about at first Shock Grin you should have seen the look on my face when the junior Dr told me his concerns. I was like this Shock Shock Shock.

They had to take me to the staff room to use their mirror as they didn't have one around, I said 'oooooh so it does look a bit like the one in casualty' Grin

ShowOfHands · 13/09/2010 09:18

Tearful? Definitely not up to work. And I do understand you want to show willing but honestly, by the sounds of it the state of your head/face when you do go back in (and no doubt before you should by the sounds of it), they'll be in doubt as to your need for time off. They really can't use it against you in any way. You've had quite a nasty accident.

We've been looking at new bathrooms recently and our only option is a shower/bath combo. I've never had one of those screens and keep looking at them in B&Q and wondering how safe they are. I think I dramatically squeaked at dh the other day 'but it's glass, what if you bent down to pick something up, didn't notice it and smashed your head on it'. He laughed. Well, well, Pavlov's head proves him wrong.

werewolf · 13/09/2010 09:18

Wow - what an accident! Shock
Glad you're (relatively) ok.

Take it easy.

TheBossofMe · 13/09/2010 09:19

Oh Pavlov, you poor thing. Hot sweet tea for you.

Bumperlicious · 13/09/2010 09:30

omg! what a trauma! Defo don't go into work. I mean this in the nicest possible way but you sound a bit incoherent, and no wonder. you must be in agony too. get dh to take you to the hospital, then you come home and have a rest.

mamaloco · 13/09/2010 09:31

poor you! I agree taxi or lift and day off work.
I broke my nose few years ago and went to work on the monday all they wanted to do is send me back to hospital and it wasn't as bad as you by the sound of it. have you already turned purple under your eyes? I can warn you it takes ages to fade.
My nose looks fine not as before but not like a boxer IYSWIM.

Bumperlicious · 13/09/2010 09:57

You may want to get some arnica for the bruising. Hope you feel better soon.

PavlovtheCat · 13/09/2010 10:05

I have, alas broken my nose, well now, 5 times. So, when I was holding some tissue to my head and felt this tight, throbbing sensation, and could see something out of my eye, almost but not quite, I knew, I just knew it was broken Sad. I am a bit concerned, as I had a nose job (septorhiniplasty) when I was 18 to repair it, and that has probably all been undone and might need redoing.

Purple not too bad, dark on the inside corder of the eyes, red and puffy under one, and the nose itself is blue/grey/black and swollen.

showofhands it really is a crap thing. I mean, granted, it is solid, as it did not break, even though it hit the sink, then the floor (albeit using my back as a cushion!), but it is secured onto the wall with like a baton, with a stopper thing on top of it, well that stopper popped out which is why it fell down, the force of it being shoved up by my head broke the seal around the popper. And although it did not break, if it had hit my DD like it hit me, it would have done worse. So, no don't get one.

PavlovtheCat · 13/09/2010 10:10

oh yes I have some arnica, I have gel and the pillules, leftover from pg.

I have not gone into work. I have called in, and left a message with manager, and spoke to a colleague who said they would all cover my appts for tomorrow if i need to take tomorrow off too. sweet of them.

My clients are going to laugh their asses off!

OP posts:
DaftApeth · 13/09/2010 10:20

Arnica! Good idea.

If you feel at all guilty about taking time off work, send them a photo of your injuries and watch the sympathy flow Wink

What do you do? Hope you don't sell cosmetics or anything, although you could be a good advert for concealer Grin
