I haven't checked all the new cabinet, but of the ones I do know about, none seem to have had the advantageous start in life of Blair, Mandelson, the Millibands or Corbyn (Mandelson and the Millibands had very useful political connections instead of wealth)

And that's before you even get to a comparison with seriously privileged men like Johnson, Cameron, Rees Mogg or Sunak.

Wes Streeting - new health minister- is definitely worth a google. Brought up by a single mum on a council estate, suffered kidney cancer himself, very left wing by all accounts. Seems like a decent person. I am very excited - as someone with chronic and complex health needs- to see what he can bring to the table.

Also his grandad spent time in prison for armed robbery. Delightful. Even his dear old nan was banged up.

But in any case dont you see its as ludicrous to say lower working class people are somehow better to be in power, as it is to say wealthy people are superior in power?

@CaptainMyCaptain it was her. Affair with a paediatricians husband.

AutumnCrow · 05/07/2024 19:51

An interesting ministerial appointment is Sir Patrick Vallance KCB as a Minister of State (Minister for Science) in the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. He is being elevated to a life peerage to make this happen.

Nice to see a scientist and a 'science realist' in there with Peter Kyle the SoS and the rest of the Cabinet, rather than an ideologue.

Bobbotgegrinch · 05/07/2024 17:53

He's not a multi millionaire, but even if he was, he'd have that money because he's worked bloody hard.

He hasn't had a leg up from Mummy and Daddy, he worked hard at a state school and managed to get into Oxford, and then worked hard to get into good jobs until he ended up in the top job in his chosen field.

He's very definitely a "working person", and may well be the epitome of one.

Yeah he is, why does it upset you so much. So is corbyn.

Hate such nasty classist comments about anyone.
But your comment is rather hypocritical as you go on to make negative classist comments based on schooling.

Come on they had every advantage thrown at them. Rayner's parents were illiterate. Her mother had uncontrolled bipolar. She was brought up in abject poverty. Despite all this she has succeeded.
Many of the previous government had gone to Eton or similar and had every advantage handed to them and they have the gaul to mock her accent. Makes me so cross.

Most of this goverment went to Oxford. Raynor is the token working class person;

Massive difference between going to Oxford (university) where you get in by being clever and Eton (school) where you get in by having super rich parents.

Er…I’m fairly certain there’s a Miliband in the cabinet…

Delighted to see Timpson getting Prisons. That's a brilliant appointment that indicates Starmer wants to bring real change imo.

Feeling hopeful tonight, it's been a while.

Lisa Nandy isn't ex-Oxford either. Nor was Peter Kyle. Both went to state schools, I believe.

Annaliese Doods wasn't Oxford. Nor was Pat McFadden.

Angela Rayner worked her way up to where she is now. She did not come from a place of privilege, she left school without any qualifications because she was pregnant, but managed to go back to college later on and used that to go into care work. That led to union involvement which then led to politics. She's worked and had to overcome some significant disadvantages to get to where she is now, which is pretty impressive given that she's now Deputy PM.

Keir Starmer also had pretty humble beginnings. He may well be financially comfortable now but I doubt it's millions - apart from anything else the legal work he was doing pre-CPS was more public interest than the lucrative commercial stuff that pays ££££. So if he is a multi-millionaire it would be interesting to understand how he is supposed to have amassed this amazing fortune - because he's not inherited it, and it's highly unlikely he earned and saved.

Both of them have given fairly detailed interviews, especially over recent years. The Rest is Politics podcast covered their backstories quite well.

I think both are very good examples of the conservative value that if you work hard you can better your situation and be successful. Particularly Angela. But the really interesting part is despite having both worked hard, bettered themselves and become successful, the reaction is to dismiss them. People try and pick holes in their achievements, or point out that they don't look, speak or dress the part.

It shows up this long-held tenet of conservatism for the nonsense that it is. Look what happens when two working class kids do what they are supposed to do - because the reality is that they are only supposed to go so far. They're supposed to stop at a socially acceptable level - a manager perhaps. They are supposed to know their place. They certainly are not supposed to overtake the aristocratic or elite members of their generation, and - shock horror - end up in charge. What happens if other people like them get the same idea? It could change everything...

Amazing post, thank you. Exactly this.

Have Not Read The Whole Thread because upon reading the title I thought exactly what the 1st and 2nd posters said. As well as thinking what a 'churlish thing' to post.

Actually, Angela is one of the first people in Govt that I shall be writing to as Minister for Levelling-up, etc because despite all attempts at tactical voting in the northern part of our vast constituency (even Vorderman couldn't advise) the rich buffoon who purports to represent us has been re-elected by his southern fans.

I'll be asking Angela to please not discount us just because Rumpole represents us - we've got serious problems here. Thanks In Advance, THING

I dont care about her fashion sense but yes, a gobby fishwife with not even enough GCSEs to even get a basic job anywhere has no place on the world stage.

Fishwife is a nastily misogynistic insult.
She didn’t get qualifications at school, no, but she has them now. Do you think nobody should have a second chance?

What Wes Streeting has managed to achieve from such a start is miraculous.

Judging by the standard of government we've had recently from wealthy people there is definitely a case for giving people who know what it's like to be on the bones of their arse a chance to improve things.

Wes Streeting and others, despite an inauspicious start have devoted a lot of their lives to public service in a way that the likes of Johnson, Truss and Sunak simply haven't.

cardibach · 05/07/2024 20:42

Myblindsaredown · 05/07/2024 17:42

Right as Oxford educated multi millionaire starmer is the epitome of the working person.

Are you suggesting working class people can’t go to Oxbbridge? Or move out of traditional working class jobs?

SkippysEar · 05/07/2024 20:19

The irony that it's implied they're the product of good Conservative values.

Good Conservative values?

Streeting grew up in poverty living in a council flat.[5][6] He recalls Conservative Party politicians, particularly Ann Widdecombe, in the 1990s "denigrating single-parent families like mine, which I took quite personally".

On the plus side, Keir has at least put her in a bit of a non job, you just have to hope he never takes ill. Nick Clegg and John Prescott never got much exposure.

He's kept the proper jobs for the posh Tory women in disguise like Bridget Phillipson, Yvette Cooper and Rachael Reeves - all Oxford grads. The funny thing is they probably look down on Rayner more than most Tories.

You think Levelling up, Housing and Communities on top of Deputy PM is a non-job 🤣🤣🤣🤣

What has she got now? All i could see is a level 2 in health and social care that is essentially worthless. She became a union rep because like all union types she has an aggressive face and a gob on her. Fair play! But how that translates to being the right hand woman to the PM I dont know.

So are we judging people by the crimes their family has committed now? What on earth. 😳

I don’t think it’s better that one class is in power as opposed to another generally but upper class, wealthy people have been in charge of the NHS for far too long now. Change is good for balance.
