CurlewKate · 07/07/2024 15:22

Round of applause and or drinks for @prettybird !!!

BIossomtoes · 07/07/2024 15:25

Loving the cartoon. 👏🏻🥂

Fwiw, I think Angela Rayner is perfect for the Levelling Up portfolio. She's shown grit and determination and has achieved high public office based on hard work alone. She had a rotten childhood, although she did have support from her grandmother. She understands what growing up in poverty is like and, I have no doubt, that an awful lot of people haven't the faintest idea what that actually means/is like and, indeed, look down on her for her accent, her way of speaking, for being a woman who speaks out, etc, etc. She's an inspiration and she's also human and has made mistakes along the way.

BIWI · 07/07/2024 16:05

Really well said @prettybird Flowers

BIWI · 07/07/2024 16:06

... and also to you @NigelHarmansNewWife Flowers

Angela Rayner has matured and is a far more professionally polished than she was five years ago. Starmer is running a very different party to the one under Corbyn

I have been impressed by her in the last few months but there is no doubt any member of the cabinet (it’s great no longer typing shadow cabinet) will be back on the back benches if they are unprofessional or leaning to far to the left

Starmer doesn’t need to rely on another cabinet member the country have voted to get rid of the Tories not for Labour personalties

Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckenberg, Richard Branson, Bill Gates, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Alan Sugar, Ellen DeGeneress, Simon Cowell.

None of them have a degree.

How dare they have done well in life? They didn't know their place, did they?

BlueLimeRun · 07/07/2024 17:02

It’s a bit ridiculous to make that comparison- AR should be AR but that doesn’t mean people have to think she’s a good politician. Let’s see what she’s capable of - hopefully she will get her head around basic biology fur a start (as many others need to as well).

Leniriefenstahl · 07/07/2024 17:05

@BlueLimeRun hopefully she’s already got her head round basic poverty and social inequalities. I think that’s what her target group are more concerned about.

We all know women bear the brunt of poverty. the issues are not separate.

Absolutely this. I’ve just listened to her on The Rest is Politics. She’s so good.

Rayner accepting transwomen as women does not preclude her from understanding how poverty impacts biological women, given she has experienced it first hand.

Much of the poverty experienced by W/C women was thanks to the tories for the most part who up until the GE were the darlings of some GC middle class affluent feminists.

ha- absolutely not a Tory fan. I really agree about equality and poverty being priority (amongst the hundreds of other things).
However, accepting biology isn’t being GC and it’s important to me and many others.

Why do so many of the supporters of Angela on this thread imply that those of us who don’t believe she’s qualified are Tories? I’m not a Tory.

Perhaps we just need to agree to disagree. I believe that Angela is not qualified to do the job, no matter what Labour supporters say. Nothing you say will change my mind.

In the same breath, nothing Tory voters say can convince me that Boris is up for the job. I’m also very pleased that Rees-Mogg lost his seat.

Throwing the names of inadequate Tory MPs at me does not mean that an inadequate Labour MP is any better. The bar is too low for all of those whose names have been mentioned upthread. Time to raise the bar.

What are the qualifications needed to be Deputy PM?

Churchview · 07/07/2024 20:50

Keir Starmer is highly educated, hugely experienced in the professional world and in politics.

He could choose anyone to be his deputy and he chose Angela Rayner.

For me, that speaks volumes about her.

That was the video that sealed my opinion of her. She wouldn’t apologise for calling WPUK and the LGB Alliance hate groups - why not?

Anyone see Hoyle getting reinstated as Speaker? His friend and fellow MP, also a Lancastrian, spoke about the way they both speak, joking that it's the rest of the house that have accents. I don't recall anyone having a go at Hoyle for sounding Northern and not sorting out his accent to fit in more.

Surely this can't be misogyny, doing the same for Angela Rayner?

I really enjoyed that joke and thought of here and this thread in particular when I heard it!

I really like Rayner and think she’s more than capable of the job, but Starmer didn’t choose her. In the Labour Party both Leader and Deputy Leader are chosen by a secret ballot of the membership.

GasPanic · 12/07/2024 16:53

Now they are in the real electioneering and infighting can start.

Angela is probably marshalling her forces.

Electioneering? For what?
And what forces? I don’t know what you are concerned about, genuinely.
