So vocal and present during the campaign and haven’t seen her anywhere at all today 🤷‍♀️😳… just being nosey. 🤔

Should Kinnock have ditched his Welsh accent? Should Flynn have ditched his Scottish accent?

You can probably tell @SOxon that I'm pretty cross with your post and those of many others.

Well there's a limit to how much you can build on this tiny island 🤷🏻‍♀️ where I live towns that used to be separate are all joining up now. Most of the population growth is down to immigration Ireland actually has the same problem but watch labour be even more slack on immigration than Tories were.
"Just build more homes" isn't going to solve this, anyone that thinks it will is a fool 🤷🏻‍♀️

We need immigration. Even Reform UK Ltd knows that.

The snobbery towards Rayner is just nasty. She has achieved more than any of the posters denigrating her.

Rockmumontherun · 07/07/2024 08:56

Her northern accent is grand, bob on I'd say! I will save my judgement on her ability to do th' job, until I've seen her do it and I'll ken (know) more.

CelesteCunningham · 07/07/2024 09:08

Angela Rayner will not allow her speech to be improved, as ‘that is who I am’

Improved. What a word. Could we not at least try to get past the idea that one accent is better than another. They're just different, and difference is good.

As for her I've had a similar life to her so I cant judge 🤷🏻‍♀️but posters are right to question the labour madness that thinks they can kee up with limitless immigration by "just building more houses"

It’s just dreadful that losing a regional accent is seen as improvement. My dad thought it was an improvement and decades of living in the south almost obliterated his beautiful Teeside accent. I loved it when the “bonny lad” went back to visit and back it came. A regional accent is very much part of identity, we’ve never asked Andy Burnham to “improve” his speech.

Thankfully Labour have made no suggestion of keeping up with "limitless immigration". The Tories set a pretty high bar in how many migrants moved here in the last few years.

I'll believe labours better when I see it 🤷🏻‍♀️ now's the time to prove it but I ain't hopeful

Your poor dad.

As an Irish person, I will never not find it amusing when Angela Rayner is referred to as having a regional accent and Boris Johnson isn't, or that one is referred to as a strong accent and the other mild.

Both are very strong to me, and both very much regional.

Those criticising Rayner mean that her accent shows she's from the wrong region, and that she should be trying to hide that not embrace it. Doesn't she know her place?

That's up to you. However it doesn't help to fabricate, saying things like Labour / unlimited immigration. We have concrete evidence of what went on with the last government. Let's see what happens now.

Putting experts rather than just mates in cabinet is already a good start.

MrsMurphyIWish · 07/07/2024 09:25

I like her accent! I find accents and dialects so interesting.

I also really like AR. I think she’s inspirational. I too grew up in poverty in a chaotic household (and have a thick accent). Luckily the pupils I teach who achieve grade 9 at GCSE and A* at A-level don’t judge me on my accent or clothing.

Some very ugly attitudes on this thread!

Can you show me where Labour has said that? Or anyone on this thread?

@Zonder

"Putting experts rather than just mates in cabinet is already a good start."

The sharp contrast between Labour and that fucking rabble. It's like we'd forgotten what a sane government looks like.

The relief is palpable. We can all get on with our lives and the circus has left town.

Thank fuck!

Well building more houses is literally in their manifesto. Which is all well and good but they make no mention of the fact population growth is driven mostly by immigration in this country (Ireland has the same problem btw you should look into it).
As they are a "left wing party" they're going to want to seem less racist or whatever than the Tories so I'll be very surprised if immigration doesn't go up rather than down.

Are there any people here who are from Stockport or its environs who
recognise that although Angela Rayner is deemed to have a ‘Northern accent’
she is actually just really badly spoken, doesn’t rely on the last consonant of words,
has sloppy speech.
Her mother was illiterate, she didn’t have a good start
However,
Angela Rayner will not allow her speech to be improved, as ‘that is who I am’
yes she is confident, gobby, Northern working class which is a broad spectrum!
That she is determinedly unpolished is a source of dismay to an electorate
with high expectations of MP’s, appearance, behaviour, morals.

I thought the green suit was beyond wacky and inappropriate.

This is not racism, classism, poor form, possibly inverted snobbery combined with geographical / regional ignorance.
This is a politician who whilst attaining high position in Government, resolutely revels
in her own ignorance and lack of grace.
I believe we deserve better, we have suffered enough

Ffs. I live 12 miles from Stockport. Similar accent but not as pronounced. No probs with her having a strong one. It’s her actions as an MP that count. She’s been voted in repeatedly by her constituency so that tells you everything.
Rees Mogg dressed like a true gentleman, cut glass accent, demeanour of the class born to rule. You’d rather have a candidate like him, all fur coat no knickers ?

Leniriefenstahl · 07/07/2024 09:44

@Leah5678 what’s reform UKs answer ? Apart from Rwanda.

U53rName · 07/07/2024 10:05

Why do so many of the supporters of Angela on this thread imply that those of us who don’t believe she’s qualified are Tories? I’m not a Tory.

Perhaps we just need to agree to disagree. I believe that Angela is not qualified to do the job, no matter what Labour supporters say. Nothing you say will change my mind.

In the same breath, nothing Tory voters say can convince me that Boris is up for the job. I’m also very pleased that Rees-Mogg lost his seat.

Throwing the names of inadequate Tory MPs at me does not mean that an inadequate Labour MP is any better. The bar is too low for all of those whose names have been mentioned upthread. Time to raise the bar.

Leniriefenstahl · 07/07/2024 10:11

@U53rName I think because some of the criticisms are puerile and people are responding to that. They’re focusing on her accent, dress sense, blunt way of speaking. I listened to her interview with James O’Brien a year or so ago and the things she said were really interesting.

CurlewKate · 07/07/2024 10:33

@Leah5678 "Well there's a limit to how much you can build on this tiny island"

Out of interest, how much of the UK is built on?

Jellycatspyjamas · 07/07/2024 10:34

What would qualify her in your mind?

5 A-C GCSEs, including Maths & English.
Undergraduate degree.
The emotional intelligence to understand when and how to speak “work language” (and no, I don’t mean accent); the way the rest of us have learned how to maintain professionalism in the office, even though we may speak differently with family or friends. This includes knowing not refer to someone as “scum” in a professional work environment.

You’ve asked for my bare minimums, of which I have three. Nothing anyone says will change them.

Jellycatspyjamas · 07/07/2024 10:48

So someone who hadn’t had the privilege of going to university shouldn’t be in government, meaning those in the electorate who don’t have that privilege shouldn’t be represented in government?

NecessaryNC24 · 07/07/2024 10:55

Government ? It's only for ex-Etonians don't y'a know 🙄
