We have a new computer with window Vista.

I cannot find anything in here.

Man problem. I put a cd in the drive and it won't open authomatically. This would not be so bad if I could find the drive and open it manually. I used to go to MY COMP and click and there it was.

I am trying to download the program to download picture from my mobile and cannot fnd the cd anywhere. Same if we put a music cd etc.

T very much IA

Also, you can see if the device manager has the CD drive listed.

My computer, right click, choose Properties, Hardware tab, then device manager.

CD rom drives are listed. If it is there, then its installed. If it has a yellow triangle, its not installed properly, you need to reinstall the driver probably.

bubbles4 · 16/10/2009 21:32

have you checked the drive in device manager,it could be that the driver needs reinstalling

PlantASeedWatchItGrow · 16/10/2009 21:37

Sorry no help, I have the same problems with Vista: just to say

I HATE VISTA!!

Sorry, rant over

PlantASeedWatchItGrow · 16/10/2009 21:39

Oh and it should be Drive 'F' that has the Cd/DVD in it.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 16/10/2009 21:41

I am unable to do links but by googling cd drive missing in my computer, microsoft has a help and support topic devoted to this ,the web address is support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 16/10/2009 21:46

Oh yes there is something with cd rom etc with an escalation mark. If I right click on it and go to properties it says

'Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

What does that mean?

OP posts:
nighbynight · 16/10/2009 21:48

It means that the driver hasnt installed properly.

You might be able to fix it by reinstalling the driver, or you might need a new driver.

Try restarting the computer with your fix-Windows CD in the CD drive, this has a lot of drivers on it.
Or, that link which bubbles posted probably has further links to a driver that you could download.

bubbles4 · 16/10/2009 21:49

it means it will sent the info about the drive and see if there is a help and support topic,I have done this in the past

nighbynight · 16/10/2009 21:49

The driver is a small computer program that allows Windows to use hardware devices like CD rom drives, or usb sticks.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 16/10/2009 21:50

bubbles4 I am trying that right now.

Oh I am so grateful to you all!

It checked it and came back saying

The device XXXXX is not working properly - the drive is missing or disconnected.

nighbynight · 16/10/2009 22:04

Er - I assume you ahve physically got a cd rom drive?

If so, then I would be tempted to try restarting the computer with the fixit disk in teh disk drive, in case reinstalling the driver fixes the problem.

nighbynight · 16/10/2009 22:04

Switch off, put the disk in, and restart.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 16/10/2009 22:07

nighbynight I have restarted several times.
How can it be uninstalled? It's the drawer in the laptop isn't it? Tthere must be something wrong with it surely. It did work when we installed window and norton though. not since. comp 3 weeks old.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 16/10/2009 22:08

Have I got a fixit disc? Will go and check that now.

Bloody hell Dh smoring next to me on the sofa is driving me insane - I am about to smash this sodding machine on his head!!!!!

bandgeek · 16/10/2009 22:11

Can I just say, my mum, DH and my own laptops are all exactly the same. It comes up with the code 19 error, and I have been trying all night to fix it as I been trying to play a CD that someone sent me to do with my family history.

I am about 2 minutes from giving up and throwing my laptop out the window! It's a pain in the arse

nighbynight · 16/10/2009 22:12

I just looked at the link that bubbles posted further down, and it gives detailed instructions on fixing this problem yourself.

Apparently, it can be due to a corrupted registry key, which you can edit yourself.

Or they give you step by step instructions for uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers.

There is also something about 3rd party software causing a problem.

bandgeek · 16/10/2009 22:15

Oh, and my laptop is about 6 weeks old, and norton installed on it fine. It is so strange!

nighbynight · 16/10/2009 22:15

damon, its far more likely to be a software problem than anything else, and there is so much software on your computer, that its impossible to predict everything that might go wrong.
I am working in a similar field at the moment, and we test like anything, but every now and then a bug slips through that affects 1000s of customers

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 16/10/2009 22:15

Yes I might look at it tomorrow. What a pain in the arse. Could I just not take it to the shop?
I did the 'we'll fix it for you option'.

Bandgeek tomorrow I will buy a power cable for my old laptop and be happy everafter - speed is not everything after all.

sorry nighbynight but I am useless at jargon. when you say software do you mean the programs etc not the actual machine I take it.

So I do have to do it myself, don;t I. What if I upgrade to windows 7. Could it make a difference. {can you tell I dread spending hours working on this - I must admit I'd be very pleased with myself if I manage to fix it}

Sorry my english is getting dreadfull but I am so tired.
