We have a new computer with window Vista.

I cannot find anything in here.

Man problem. I put a cd in the drive and it won't open authomatically. This would not be so bad if I could find the drive and open it manually. I used to go to MY COMP and click and there it was.

I am trying to download the program to download picture from my mobile and cannot fnd the cd anywhere. Same if we put a music cd etc.

T very much IA

Yes, software is programs.

I would do it myself. You do have to be very careful what you do with the registry, ie only do what they say. Apart from that, its quite straightforward, from what they say on teh MS website, just follow the instructions exactly.
If you have access to a helpline, they might talk you through it.

Getting the machine upgraded to Win 7 would def solve the problem.

nighbynight · 16/10/2009 22:36

The registry is a storage area for numbers and text that programs , and Windows, want to remember between runs.

Windows uses it such a lot, that if it gets corrupted, you see results like this, that things appear not to be there any more.

WebDude · 16/10/2009 22:59

Unfortunately, either for a 'fixit' CD or an upgrade, it's likely to need the CD drive to work first...

Am I right in thinking that both people seeing 'error 19' problems have installed Norton on recently bought machines? Sounds too much of a coincidence to me.

Anyway, off to get myself a cuppa and take the cat for a walk.

nighbynight · 16/10/2009 23:09

I thought of that too Webdude, but I would still try it, to eliminate the possibility.

WebDude · 17/10/2009 00:12

Well, I guess the BIOS will spot the CD, OK... It's more about whether there's sufficient code available to make it 'boot' the machine and install the drivers, and fix the registry for the OP, that I wonder about...

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 17/10/2009 07:44

Now you have lost me... .

But yes I will try or call the help line just in case.

I installed Norton and then two days later dh installed office si it still worked. Noting after that.

Boh.

Can you work out the date when the cd drive dissappeared,if so you could try to do a system restore to before this point.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 17/10/2009 10:49

No I don't. But I don't mind to do a system restore from the day I bought it. I am just at loss now as the automatic fixit doesn't do anything and cannot see where I can do it manually. I am sooooo annoyed!

OP posts:
DamonBradleylovesPippi · 17/10/2009 10:59

I have tried to do it manually but even that doesn't work.
So it sends me back to the manufacturer as the software was installed when I bought the computer.

Good luck to us!

Hi,have you tried to do a system restore to before you installed norton,it might be worth a try,J ust out of interes, where did you buy it?If the system restore doesnt work, there may be a loose connection,

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 17/10/2009 11:23

bubbles I have called samsung who checked the system and like you all said there isn't a problem with the machine. He asked me to install a samsung resore cd which we were never given although he thinks we should have.

I am kicking myself as we normally buy in John Lewis in order to avoid such problems but this time we bought from Comet. So I am dreading going there.

If you can tell me how to do a system restore I'll be happy to do it. We bought the comp on the 21/09 so I can do it from that day as I think we installed norton the day after or a couple of days after.

click start, all programmes, accessories, system tools, system restore, you will then be given a point to restore to,if you want to restore to an earlier date then you click choose a different restore point, you may only see a few restore points, click show restore points older than 5 days, pick which one you want and follow the instructions,it will take a little while for the system to restore, good luck and let us know how you get on.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 17/10/2009 11:41

Thanks bubbles. The earliest date it gives me is the 11/10. Why would that be?
I'll try again. If that doesn't work shouldn't I take it back to Comet and let them sort it out? After all if it wasn't for you all I wouldn't even gone this far.

OP posts:
bubbles4 · 17/10/2009 11:48

did you click show restore points older than 5 days, and what did you do on that day that caused that restore point?I have never bought from Comet,so I dont know what their tech support is like,my only concern if it is a software issue rather than a hardware issue,I am wondering if they would charge you to correct a software issue.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 17/10/2009 12:27

I have and only gives me a handful of restore points, about 8 one per day from the 10th of this month. Nothing previously. Cannot think of anything in particular that I have done to cause such restore points.

I bet they will chanrge. Guy from Samsung said that if I do not have this recovery cd I can purchase it from somewhere and try that. So whatever I do it seems to be hading that way! How annoying.

bubbles thanks again for wasting spaending your time with me on this, it is much appreciated.

OP posts:
bubbles4 · 17/10/2009 13:11

Another idea, does it say anything next to local disc d,you may have a recovery partition that you can use to take the laptop back to how it was when you bought it,Did samsung supply any user manuals? They may be on the computer somewhere.

nighbynight · 17/10/2009 13:13

My computer is also a Samsung, and earlier this year it refused to start at all. The system restore disk (sorry couldnt remember the proper name in english!) fixed it.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 17/10/2009 16:56

Now you will not believe this! DH (not at all a tech guy) after his aft doze on the sofa came to have a look. Found what you mention - to restore the comp to when it was bought and hei presto! it is fixed ! He is soooo gloating and will never let me forget it . I must admit I am looking at him in a different light .
So now everything works okay, I downloaded my phone program and have all pictures on my comp and can get music onto playlist.

Now I do not dare to install Norton as I worry it had something to do with it. Do you think?

Thank you so so so so so much. You have been great help.

(so sorry for going overboard with emoticon but obviously elated that do not have to hear some pathetic excuse from comet).

bubbles4 · 17/10/2009 17:59

I am so pleased for you,I was sure the solution was there it was just finding it.I dont know about Norton and if it caused your problem,I have only ever used free avg and never had a problem with it,From what I found on google, your problem is quite common, you can do some gloating with your dh as it was your work that found the solution,he only applied it.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 17/10/2009 19:04

Yes bubbles4 we always had the free avg as well. So no idea. Also the comp seems to be set up for McAfee and if you want to install norton you have to disinstall that.

OP posts:
nighbynight · 18/10/2009 08:20

well done you and dh
If it was me, I would probably install Norton again, to check if the problem came back....
