Can you give me any possible reasons why I'm having problems with certain websites? Specifically John Lewis and NotOnTheHighStreet.

I just can't get through to those sites although I have no problem on my PC. Have tried through Safari and Firefox - I'm new to Apple so may be doing something really stupid!

I don't really know even though I have had a mac. Wanted to try and help anyway though... Could it be something to do with your firewall or a pop up blocker? Just guessing. Hope someone who knows what they're on about comes along shortly.

Littledawley · 08/06/2009 07:04

Thanks anyway Dalrymps - it's just so strange!

ummm- I have a mac but those 2 work fine for me...

Is it new? maybe take it to your apple shop, to the drop-in session troubleshoot thingy?

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 08/06/2009 07:33

When you say can't get through to those sites what exactly do you mean? Is there an error message?

Littledawley · 08/06/2009 14:07

It is a new machine - it doesn't come up with an error message, it just won't load and eventually times out. It's really odd, I can get on to Waitrose for example but it won't link through to John Lewis. DH is playing with the settings now - I know it's not the JL website as I've just been on through my PC.

I have a Mac too, am hopeless when it comes to technical things. I have come across a few websites it does this on (can't think of their names off the top of my head).

Dh thinks its wonderful, we have had it about a year bth I preferred my old pc.

Littledawley · 08/06/2009 18:45

I love the calendar and the photos etc but this thing with the websites is driving me nuts!!

OP posts:
paisleyleaf · 08/06/2009 18:48

No it's not the websites. I've just looked from my mac.
It's something you're end......but sorry - I don't know what.

FlappytheBat · 08/06/2009 18:49

Have you downloaded the Beta version of the Safari update?

I have and since then have had issues accessing some of the websites that I used to have no problems with before.

If you have, you should see a "bug" on the right handside of the toolbar and if you click on this, you will be able to send a snapshot of the current page to apple.

Littledawley · 08/06/2009 19:27

Not the Beta version apparently

OP posts:
warthog · 08/06/2009 19:29

on the menu
go to

safari
security

for web content, are plug-ins, java and javascript enabled?

Themasterandmargaritas · 08/06/2009 19:38

I can't access my banking site either. Retired Goth suggests that safari is a rubbish browser and we should download omniweb's browser. I admit I haven't yet, but I think I will.

warthog · 08/06/2009 19:41

no no no no no

should be fine with banking software.

have you made sure you've downloaded all the latest security updates?

and checked my previous post?

singleWhiteMale · 08/06/2009 19:58

I would check that your DNS is working..

Have a look in Applications -> Utilities for an app called 'Network Utility'. Run it and select the 'Lookup' tab. In the box type www.johnlewis.com and hit the lookup button.

Tell us what happened

Then try a lookup for johnlewis.com

Themasterandmargaritas · 08/06/2009 20:13

I have done the lookup and it says

+multiline +nocomments +nocmd +noquestion +nostats +search
;; global options: printcmd

Warthog my security settings are as you say Where do I go to get latest security downloads?

singleWhiteMale · 08/06/2009 20:40

Themaster.. that's not right. There is something wrong with your dns lookup.

You should see this result for www.johnlewis.com:

www.johnlewis.com. 27923 IN CNAME johnlewis.com.

and for johnlewis.com:

johnlewis.com. 27818 IN A 213.216.131.220
johnlewis.com. 28578 IN MX 50 relay0.johnlewis.co.uk.
johnlewis.com. 28578 IN MX 50 relay2.johnlewis.co.uk.
johnlewis.com. 28578 IN MX 80 mx.johnlewis.com.
johnlewis.com. 28578 IN NS ns0.johnlewis.co.uk.
johnlewis.com. 28578 IN NS euro-ns2.cw.net.
johnlewis.com. 28578 IN NS euro-ns1.cw.net.
johnlewis.com. 28578 IN NS ns1.johnlewis.co.uk.

singleWhiteMale · 08/06/2009 20:41

BTW what is this mystery banking site? Is it your secret swiss account?

brokenspacebar · 08/06/2009 20:46

I have a mac and I frequently browse JL... nae bother, I only use safari.

Themasterandmargaritas · 08/06/2009 20:46

If I told you I would have to kill you.

So how do I correct my dns?

Littledawley · 08/06/2009 20:49

???? I'm getting out of my depth here!! Followed your steps and got

johnlewis.com 28437 IN CNAME johnlewis.com

OP posts:
Littledawley · 08/06/2009 20:51

"Safari can't open this page because the server is not responding"

I need to buy towels!!!

OP posts:
Littledawley · 08/06/2009 20:52

Is it because it's wireless? Should I try plugging it in to the router?

OP posts:
Themasterandmargaritas · 08/06/2009 20:52

lol at the towels

Littledawley · 08/06/2009 20:56

Go into 'System Preferences' -> Network

In the panel on the left, make sure your connection to the internet is highlighted (it should say 'connected'). What are the settings in the boxes to the right?
