Help - why can't I get our Wii online?????

Typical we wait ages for wireless and now we've got it and some new games and the dc are all excited about playing online and........ I can't get the blardy thing to work! What am I doing wrong? Someone talk me through how they did it for me to compare please. Thank you

Yes have been there and done that but still not working . I must be missing something really obvious mustn't I - maybe I should try again before the wine this time . (Ony joking)

Check its finding it correctly ie wep or wpa. Also make sure another wireless device can connect from the same spot, incase you have poor coverage. Ours worked first time, which I know is not what you wanted to hear.

Yes have checked wpa bit. Our pc's can access the router just not the wii. Maybe am typing the ip address etc wrongly will have to have another try.

Do your have the correct subnet and router/gateway address?

If you're not sure what these are go to your PC (assuming its windows). Click on Start-run then type cmd, in the command window type ipconfig /all and then look up the gateway and subnet.

Or consider using DHCP, assuming that your router supports it.

Not sure about the DHCP bit?

Have typed in IP address and primary DNS Gateway but it asked me for secondary gateway and don't know what to put there because it is blank on the set up on PC (had to type IP and DNS etc in to get the wireless router to work in the first place - wouldn't work on automatic).

did you have to manually allow all your computers via the access thing using their MAC addresses?

maybe you need to switch that off in your router control panel

No didnt do anything with MAC addresses (don't even know what they are without looking!)

Ok how do you know the address is correct?

Perhaps you can tell us your router/access point. It may be easier to help you then and the ranges your using e.g. 192.168.1.1 if its a c anything that's not 172, 10 or 192 don't tell us for security reasons.

Maddoguk it is a sky router so am just using the sky default settings so yes the one you said and the 255 one. Sorry to appear thick but what is my access point?

Um... I set mine up by (I think) simply letting it search for the connection all by itself. Just followed the instructions from the internet.

I certainly don't remember typing anything in bar the s*dding PIN code DS1 set up on it..

No I didn't have to type anything in either, aside from our passcode of course to router - just followed the bumpf on the link I posted above and it did it all on it's own.

Yes I tried that but it just kept throwing an error message at me. I assumed because my pc wouldn't connecto to the router by searching either that that was the problem? Hence my trying to set it up manually. I am a wireless novice so don't really know what am doing!

oh thank you! Technology and me are not getting on at the moment. Broadband is going really slow at the moment either that or explorer keeps freezing on me. Gah my head hurts!!

Ok here we go. What I am telling you here is public domain info so I am not exposing you to any risks.

Make sure you do this whist connected via a wire, not wireless.

You need to login to your sky router, Its normally 192.168.0.1 the user name is admin and the password is sky

if you follow these instructions it will tell you how to enable the wireless section and set a new wpa-psk key tinyurl.com/885me7 (i shortened the url with tinyurl).
its important to enable wireless and call its ssid as a name you remember e.g. polgara2 and choose a wpa password that's strong ie up and lower case and a letter and number combination.

If you a laptop nows the time to connect it to your wireless. Do this by searching for wireless networks choosing your new ssid and then entering the new wpa-key. You can also download some software called netstumber tinyurl.com/4pjzv at this point if you have windows. Netstumbler will allow you to see if your wireless channel number conflicts with your neighbours by listing there channel numbers. its important you choose one thats different. If there is a conflict plug it back into the wire and change the channel number back at the relevant place listed in the sky instructions tinyurl.com/885me7 .

Once you have done that you need to go and set up the wii. The instructions are here

Why will changing the network key make any difference?

Can I not just try changing the channel number first or will that make no difference on its own? I have already followed all those instructions with my set up as it currently stands but to no avail.

When I set up the router the first time, to get it to work wirelessly on my desktop I had to give it a static IP address etc but I didn't have to do that on my laptop - that just picked up the router happily. Why the difference do you know?

I was hoping by starting again (the wireless bit) you will effectively ensure that its set the way you know, not the way you think you know, but happy to try any method you want.

Yes changing the channel number is a good idea if your sure you know your wpa-key and ssid. the number of wireless issues fixed by using netstumbler and changing ssid's and channel numbers is enormous. If the name is the default it could conflict.

Your desktop needs switching to dhcp and then it will get its own address. You could hardcode your wii provided it finds the ssid and the wpa-key gets entered correctly. A manual address to choose would be something like 192.168.0.26 (assuming thats not the one you chose for your desktop), subnet 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.0.1.

Right I am sure I know my ssid and key so I will change the channel number and see if that affects it. When I checked the router before it was set to auto? Shall I try 11 or 6 or something else?

I have already tried hardcoding the wii (with the numbers you suggested actually) and it did recognise the ssid and accepted my key but everytime it goes to test the connection it gives me an error code. Am unsure as to which part it is objecting to?

If I change my desktop to DHCP (how?)to enable it to find its own address will that then have a knockon effect on the wii or is it totally separate?

in reverse order

desktop is seperate, but using the old IT rule of dont change it, dont change it, its fine as a static.

so to choose the number lets go for the netstumbler option if you have time. You can see your neighbours ssid names and channel numbers and then choose something completely different. Its best to choose something unique or the same as a weak signal. 13 or 6 are normally a good idea!
