ah the more information question! Vista on a latop, a rare thing!

try this url vistumbler.sourceforge.net/ essentially you want to use the command ie start run then cmd then netsh wlan show networks mode=bssid

or use this one

ok

are you sure the key is going in 100% I know sometime the case sensitivity can cause issues. any chance you would consider changing your key for a few minutes to something simple e.g helloworld then seeing if you can get it to connect. if it connects you can change it back.

The error code from the wii will help. Sadly I need to get to sleep as I have work in the morning but can help again tomorrow unless of course another wizard comes along!

Polgara2 · 29/12/2008 22:51

ok I am getting very tired and fuzzy headed as well - both dc had sleepovers last night (although not much sleep appeared to be involved!)

Thank you very much will let you know tomorrow how I get on

ok tonights ideas!

Try changing your modem to use wep (yes this is less secure) and a key a hex key (64bit) that it is generated from a site like this www.andrewscompanies.com/tools/wep.asp

If this works then you can try changing back to wpa and go for 128bit key, perhaps a generated one so you know it conforms ie some devices expect a true 128bit or 64bit key.

Polgara2 · 31/12/2008 08:38

ok well its still not working but i need to read that again i think before i try your last suggestion. Haven't a clue what you mean about hex key and 128bit key without googling!
I should explain the reason i have been so hesitant about changing the ssid and key etc is because it will involve a fair bit of furniture moving as the pc is not near a phone socket so to wire in the router is a major pain! I would of course do so if it was SURE to work.

Will report back

i have just up DD's wii and 2 laptops and a PS3 wirelessly to a livebox and I really struggled at first but then realised you have to put the router in pairing mode before doing it, on the livebox you press the button marked 1, this lasts for 10 mins and then when the wii has found the connection put in the key, this bit stumped me, I printed off all sorts of numbers only to find out the number I needed is on the bottom of the bloody livebox , now we are all wireless, good luck with yours, I am sure you will get there in the end!

Polgara2 · 31/12/2008 09:06

oh ok what is pairing mode? Is is just pertinent to a livebox (assume that is type of router?) and will i have one I wonder . I really am going to scweam soon!

Ok lets not get to screaming. Totally understand the moving the router point, perhaps you can leave an ethernet cable coiled up but accessible by an adult so its easier in the future.

You don't need to put the router in pairing mode. Only if your going to brigde to an ethernet extender, or you want an xbox to pair controllers etc, which you are not.

the hex key is an encrytion method. Some routers pad a small key, like "hello" to make it 64bit, of course you dont see this so its a pain and other systems just accept it. I dont know about the wii because I know my key is 128bits long so it just works.

Changing the key and perhaps switching to wep is the first port of call.

this link www.wiichat.com/nintendo-wii-online/5820-official-wii-wireless-internet-connection-guide.html shows you the commands on the wii.

if its any help tonight we are switching to going away and taking our wii with us, so tonight I need to pair it to another wireless router, happy to talk type in exactly what I did when I get there if thats any help, I know that router is using wpa.

Wahoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We're on

In the end I changed it to channel 1 and then deleted the settings on the Wii and reset it all up and bingo!

Thanks for all your suggestions though

DC merrily mario-karting away!
