I'd like to buy a laptop. I've never had one before, always had Dell desktops. I'd probably go for a Dell laptop unless someone can recommend a better brand.
It needs to have a very good graphics card and at least 2GB of RAM.
I have about £1,000 to spend.

I would LOVE to get a mac. I would get one in a heartbeat because they are just so delicious but I need to be able to run a 3d program on it that I can't run on a mac

MacBook here too. Adore it :-)

Install Windows on it as well if you must so you can run your 3d software.

I have a Sony Vaio
It is great and you can use in the garden as it has a special screen

Battery life a bit shite though

quickdrawmcgraw · 13/05/2008 11:04

hmmm. Maybe I could get a mac and keep his heap upstairs to do 3d stuff on. eeek My heart just skipped a beat. I think I will get a mac! I'll just pop along to the apple site to start drooling.

I have a Philips Freevents, with an 11" monitor - its the prettiest PC I've seen, almost as cute as a Mac, and fits in my handbag . Behaves like a dream. Only downside is the finish on the mouse pad has worn out very quickly so looks a bit icky.

McDreamy · 13/05/2008 13:08

MacBook Pro - it's fabulous!

PrincessPeaHead · 13/05/2008 13:08

I have a sony vaio vgn-fz38M that I bought a month or so ago. Excellent. Blu-ray disc, 4GB memory, 2GB hard drive

bundle · 13/05/2008 13:10

we have a toshiba, it's got a 17" screen, prob a bit too big. but good battery life and excellent screen.

quickdrawmcgraw · 13/05/2008 13:10

dh really wants me to get a Mac too. They're very expensive though aren't they? I was looking at like for like (although I know there's really nothing like a mac) and the mac was so much more expensive.

DisplacementActivity-It's 3D studio Max that I want it to run too!

I love my MacBook too. dp bought it for me just before Xmas. We still have the ancient PC upstairs but I hardly ever switch it on and it takes sooo long to start up when I do.

Volkl · 13/05/2008 13:15

dell inspiron is absolutely fab!

PrincessPeaHead · 13/05/2008 13:22

Yes dh is a graphic designer and his whole design department use macs. whenever he sits at my pc there's a lot of tutting and swearing.
on the other hand pph makes a good point ..750quid is a niiiice price for 4gb memory and I could go on a weekend away with the change.

I have a Packard Bell and its shite - I have spent more on replacement batteries, hardrives, motherboard, cable, another cable then the thing cost in the first place.

IT bloke I know says Sony, Toshiba and Dell are the only laptops to get.

quickdrawmcgraw · 13/05/2008 13:59

Yes I've tried dh's out and I love it. It's how I'd design a computer. But I worry that my right mouse button finger would shrivel and become stumplike if I switched.

ok Packard Bell's are off the list

Another vote for Macbook here. Every time I go on someone else's computer, I just marvel at how anyone can work out where anything is on them. Haven't seen that blue screen and fatal exception screen for over 4 years either...
