This may sound strange, but I'm being hassled somewhat by a former work colleague via email. Nothing sinister, but I just wonder if there's a way of blocking his emails from reaching my inbox.

Have you got hotmail?

Sure there is a facility to block people on there?

marina · 01/02/2008 10:37

So much depends on what e-mail system you are using

Is this your workplace address or a personal account eg Hotmail or Gmail?

MaggieW · 01/02/2008 10:49

It's my home system - outlook express - windows vista. Email account with BTinternet.com.

Meeely2 · 01/02/2008 10:58

MaggieW · 01/02/2008 11:06

damn, as i suspected, outlook express has limited functionality....do you have a Tools menu at all, and within it a RULES option? Let me find someone here with outlook express.

MaggieW · 01/02/2008 11:11

Yes, not in the actual email, but on outlook it says rules and alerts. If I click that it offers two tabs, one saying email alerts the other manage alerts.

Tools > Message Rules > Blocked Senders List Then type in this guys full address. BINGO, know i'd gerrit in the end.

MaggieW · 01/02/2008 11:12

Sorry, meant email RULES, not alerts.

OP posts:
Meeely2 · 01/02/2008 11:13

were you right clicking IN the actual mail? I meant with your inbox open, and your mails listed just right click his. I have found a copy of Outlook Express 6, which version are u using?

MaggieW · 01/02/2008 11:13

errr, tools doesn't offer me message rules, just rules and alerts and then the two tabs mentioned above. None have blocked senders list unfortunately.

Sorry - my fault - it's not outlook express (we've just changed laptop and used to use that). It's Microsoft Outlook. Sorry.

sounds to me like you've got proper outlook not outlook express. In which case, you can have your list of mails showing, and right click one of his without opening it, and it SHOULD give you an option to Create Rule, let me know.

Meeely2 · 01/02/2008 11:19

Click create Rule, then put a tick in From SoandSo then select, "move the item to" and select Deleted items. should do it.....

MaggieW · 01/02/2008 11:19

Ah, may be on to somehting. When i right click when in the email I get create rule which then offers various options regarding his email. It says
When I get email with all of the selected conditions
and then it has a box with his name
a box with the subject of this email
then it says
do the following and I can click on
display in the new item alert window
play a selected sound
or move email to folder (and gives options)

There is an advanced options button at bottom

  • that just gives more options of selected conditions. no mention of blocking it.

BINGO! Thank you, thank you. It's done it and has removed the one from my inbox. Great. Does he get any notification (as he tags them) that that's the case, or will it just remained unopened? Thank you again.

OP posts:
Meeely2 · 01/02/2008 11:22

OR

Go to Tools --> Options, click on the Junk E-mail button at the top of the pop up window, click on the "Blocked Senders" tab, and click Add. Add your nuisance mailer and jobs a goodun.

Meeely2 · 01/02/2008 11:24

i think if you keep that rule, he will receive a mail saying deleted unopened. If you block him completely, i don't think he will know.

MaggieW · 01/02/2008 11:27

Ok - just so I've got it right - so the second method - via the tools-options-junk email button means he wont' know?

OP posts:
Meeely2 · 01/02/2008 11:29

he won't know, mails will go straight to your junk mail folder so won't trigger that it's been deleted - until of course you empty your junk mails folder.

I do believe you can set your mail though not to send a read receipt even though he has requested one.......let me ponder - watch this space.

Meeely2 · 01/02/2008 11:31

Tools > Options > Email option button --> tracking options button, at the bottom, select Never send a response. He will be in perpetual limbo wondering if you read it or not.

MaggieW · 01/02/2008 11:31

That's great - did i say thank you?!!

OP posts:
Meeely2 · 01/02/2008 11:32

yes, shucks ma'am its my job!

pirategirl · 04/02/2008 13:01

hiya, i have just blocked someone , I have outlook express but it says that any mail i receive form them, will go directly to my deleted folder.

Is this all I can do?? I would rather not have the ability to read these emails at all. I just don't want them to be delivered to me at all. iyswim.

any help muchly appreciated!
