Hotel WiFi and saved email addresses

Katrinawaves · 30/11/2019 23:27

I’ve just logged on to a hotel WiFi using my work computer and it asked me which email address I wanted to use from a drop down menu. The drop down menu contained my husband’s email addresses as well as my own (including one I didn’t know about)

My work laptop has lots of security and I’m sure he couldn’t (and wouldn’t) have used it to access the secret email account but he ha stayed in this hotel previously and also used the WiFi here.

Can anyone explain how or why my laptop would have picked up his email address in this way? Is the only answer that he has in fact used my laptop with this email address at some point? If yes that would be completely disastrous for me as it would mean he’s looked at adult material on my computer which will be a sacking offence if detected.

who's was the secret enail address? yours or his? Were you logged into Google?

Katrinawaves · 30/11/2019 23:33

His.

No I was logged in via internet explorer. The drop down menu showed 2 of my email addresses and 2 of his, one was his regular one and one was his porn one.

Not sure if this makes a difference but he made the hotel booking and he is also here with his computer and phone but not in same room.

So you are in separate rooms and he has a porn email?

Surely he would have the common sense not to use your laptop if you could be sacked.

Katrinawaves · 30/11/2019 23:43

You’d like to think so but at the moment nothing would surprise me! Hence why he’s in a separate room.

I can’t understand why my work laptop would have his porn email account stored anywhere if he’s never used it. I clearly didn’t type it in because I didn’t know what it was. Could it be because he has used the WiFi at the hotel to access the porn account and the WiFi landing page recognised my laptop was in some way connected to him?

He has to log in on your laptop for the email to be stored

Katrinawaves · 30/11/2019 23:54

That’s what I was worried about. Ok thanks

Yeh I 2nd that he would have had to use your work laptop. Browsing history? Can you have a look .. or is it all deleted?

TheYear · 01/12/2019 00:11

At some point those email addresses have been used to log on to something on your laptop.

cdtaylornats · 01/12/2019 08:18

Why would the hotel harvest your email. The drop down list is local to your laptop - unless you share a Google or Microsoft account.

Katrinawaves · 01/12/2019 08:24

It’s been caused by a shared gmail account. I managed to work that out last night. I’ve spoken to work and now need to wait to see what’s going to happen

Oh my goodness. Your husband is a twat. I hope work are ok.

NerrSnerr · 01/12/2019 08:28

How do you know the secret email address is for porn? I have a couple of email addresses my husband probably doesn't know about, purely because I don't use them often and there's never been a reason to mention them, they're nothing dodgy though.

Aquicknamechange2019 · 01/12/2019 08:30

Have you asked him about it?

NewNameGuy · 01/12/2019 08:31

Jesus, sorry op hope you can explain to work without cringing

MyKingdomForBrie · 01/12/2019 08:34

If it's a shared gmail account doesn't that mean that he likely hasn't used the laptop for anything untoward? What have you disclosed to work?

Scotinthenorth · 01/12/2019 08:39

How do you know it’s for porn? I have at least 7 email addressesMy DH knows nothing about

GiveHerHellFromUs · 01/12/2019 08:42

It's weird that your assumption is porn. Have you told work this without even asking your husband?

FixTheBone · 01/12/2019 09:26

@DOobbyHP:

Not true.

form data (emails, passwords, addresses etc) is saved in files used by your web browser. If you are logged onto your web browser on your home computer (or any other) and your husband uses it, any data can potentially be synchronised across to any other computer that you log into the web browser with.

Katrinawaves · 01/12/2019 09:30

It is porn. I’ve found the sites in the google browsing history in my work laptop. I’ve told work exactly what’s happened.

Sorry OP. Was hoping for your sake it would be some sort of random mix up. I assume work has told you to change your passwords immediately?

Katrinawaves · 01/12/2019 10:03

I haven’t had any practical advice from work yet. Just been told by my boss that he will need to escalate internally and he will get back to me as soon as he can but in the meantime to try not to worry.

Aquicknamechange2019 · 01/12/2019 10:18

I'd change my passwords immediately now you know that they've been compromised. That way you can show you've taken immediate steps to stop him being able to do it again. They will likely want to know how he was able to log on in the first place.

Katrinawaves · 01/12/2019 10:33

He didn’t log in to my computer.

He used our home computer and google search to log in to them. I’d accessed google on my work computer occasionally to check my gmail while travelling. Google synchs searches across devices in these circumstances.

He definitely doesn’t have my work password and I do change that one regularly. I can change it again now however.
