Chrome - Advertising Tabs opening when I click on links

HeeHiles · 28/04/2014 20:33

Can anyone help me with this? I'm on Chrome and on this site and Facebook when I click on a link or topic a Chrome Tab opens advertising either Celebrity news, or Credit checks and Financial products.

I have downloaded an Adware cleaner, MalwareBytes, CC Cleaner and scanned and cleaned but nothing is working - If I uninstall Chrome and then re-install will this fix the problem?

Driving me nuts!

They can be a real pain to get rid of. You need to do a few things (possibly a couple of times). Firstly, check Add/Remove programs from the control panel and look for programs with the same name as the advertising site which is popping up. Remove that. Then in Chrome itself you need to check the settings for tabs which open at start and also home page tabs and make sure you remove anything untoward which appears there.

Apologies, I'm not at my PC right now and can't remember the exact settings but if you Google the advertising company name and "remove from Chrome" you'll find a ton of hits which explain in more detail.

I had to do this recently and it did take a couple of attempts before I got rid of the damn things but it worked eventually!

Thanks Pedro - I'll give it a go. I have done the first bit, I looked in Add/Remove programmes but couldn't see anything untoward in there. But I'll try the other steps and see how I get on - I'll let you know Smile

No joy at all - there are no programmes on my control panel, can't find anything on extensions and my home page tabs all look as they should be, it's really weird I can't find it anywhere and have only downloaded DropBox recently and have now removed it but I don't think it's that anyway!

I'm also getting Hpylgr.com adverts but there is no trace of it either! This has me truly flummoxed Confused

Thank you for taking the time to help thought Smile

Perhaps try Kaspersky Anti-Rootkit Scanner see if that finds anything.

You have probably run a rootkit scanner but you never know a different scanner may pick up something.

there are no programmes on my control panel
What none? Mine says 118, some of which were installed by the computer manufacturer.

Does sound like it is AdWare, something on your system has installed a bit of software that gets triggered whenever you search for something and may occur when browsing around the web.

nannynick · 30/04/2014 23:16

As you have CCleaner... if you run that, then click on Tools, then Startup... that will show what things are running on system launch. You can sort the list by Enabled, to show those things currently set to run.
Many of things there you won't know what they do, so finding the problem is tricky, but you could try searching the Program name shown to see if Google can tell you what it is. It also shows you the file location, so sometimes that helps to identify what something is.
Probably best not to touch any setting but anything that looks unusual, then google it and see if you can find out more about it - is it something that is needed by your system?

HeeHiles · 01/05/2014 12:13

Hi Nanny - Sorry meant no Dodgy looking programmes on my control panel - there are programmes but only what should be there - sorry for confusion!

I will try your suggestions - I do think it's some kind of Ad virus - I'm also getting words on websites highlighted in Red with double lines under them - when my cursor passes over the words more Ads pop up! So yeah someone is definitely trying to sell me stuff!!

Thanks - I'll come back to you - fingers crossed.

go into tools > extensions and download adblock or adblock plus - it should solve the problem if you have already rid yourself of malware.

DoctorTwo · 01/05/2014 13:55

...words highlighted in red with double lines under them...

That little beauty is called Text Enhance. Luckily there are sites which tell you how to get rid of it.

HeeHiles · 01/05/2014 14:12

Hi dwells - I have Adblocker already - they're not pop up ads they are an actual Chrome Tab opening which is how they are bypassing AdBlocker I think?

Thanks Doctor will have a go at that one too! Will have to do it later though as I am supposed to be working now!

OK it's gone! Went in to Chrome' Extensions and there was a game on there which I thought was quite innocent but as it was something 'unusual' I un-installed it and it was the culprit! I don't remember the name as I really thought it wasn't anything ominous! Will try and see if DD2 remembers (this has got her grubby fingerprints all over it!) and let you all know - but phew! Glad it's all clear now - was getting very frustrating.

Thanks For everyone who took time to help me Smile

[[http://www.enigmasoftware.com/adwarearcadefrontier-removal/ Details about it here]] includes files and registey enteries.
DO NOT TOUCH REGISTRY unless you know what you are doing.

Looks like it is low threat but annoying adware.

Perhaps chat to children about how Free does not always mean it will be completely free... adverts create revenue.

Get them to think: if it is an online game, why does it need a download?

HeeHiles · 02/05/2014 20:20

Hi Nanny - yes we have had all the chats about downloading and registering, she knows I won't allow her to register for anything, laptop is always in the living area and I check history to make sure she doesn't go anywhere she's not supposed to!

She promises she hasn't downloaded anything so need to find out more before I start throwing accusations about!

Thanks for link!
