A good free email provider that's not hotmail?

UnSerpentQuiCourt · 03/12/2011 22:45

My hotmail account has been blocked because it got infected by an email from a work colleague and sent out thousands of spams. Hotmail tells me to nominate another email account for a password reset message. I have set up four new hotmail accounts but each one 'doesn't exist' by the next day so I can't get the message. Any suggestion for a non-hotmail free account I could set up?

PastGrace · 03/12/2011 22:46

Gmail. It is incredible. Makes hotmail seem so outdated...

crazycrackernanna · 03/12/2011 22:46

My yahoo account has disappeared too, but I hadn't used it for months. Might try gmail or new yahoo. Thanks.

Gmail, fab.

UnSerpentQuiCourt · 03/12/2011 23:53

Setting up gmail account - aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaghhhh!
It won't accept my 'birthday' (=date of birth?) and won't give me an account 'due to my age'. Am I too old for an email account???

were you meant to put // and 4 figures for the year?
01/01/1979

Parietal · 03/12/2011 23:56

They won't give accounts to under 13s. Double check what you entered

Gmail is great.

slartybartfast · 03/12/2011 23:56

/ rather than . between the numbers i mean

01.01.1979

or

01.jan.79

UnSerpentQuiCourt · 04/12/2011 00:03

Three more "In order to have a Google Account, you must meet certain age requirements. To learn more about online child safety, visit the Federal Trade Commission's website." and two more "The characters you entered didn't match the word verification. Please try again."
They did they did they did.

I did use // and I did use 4 figures in the year.
Maybe I should ask a grown up to help? Hmm

I had that problem when I was setting up a gmail for a community group (obviously doesn't have a birthday, but chose one in 2011). Got the underage message forever more, despite going back and changing the date. However when I used a different computer with exact same details but an appropriate date it worked OK. Might work if you use a different browser too.

Bossybritches22 · 04/12/2011 00:13

Gmail is fab once set up & you can have several different accounts with different addys/passwords if you want to have an official work & private one.

HugosGoatee · 04/12/2011 00:14

It uses the American system for dates - you know how they call 11th September 9/11, where we'd call it 11/9.

So if your dob is say 26.04.77 you need to put 04.26.77.

Got the American bit; may have to wait several days until I can find care for various responsibities and go to someone else's house / library to use a different computer. How can it be this difficult?
