Would having an iPad and an iPhone be overkill?

I have an iPhone at the moment and hardly ever bother switching the PC on at home now because I use the phone for virtually everything. I'm thinking that as I use my iPhone most of the time as opposed to the PC, it would be useful to have the bigger iPad screen for when I'm at home. DH thinks I'm nuts. I on the other hand think it's a v sensible idea! Who's right?

I have both and use both, plus use my laptop as well.
I like my gadgets and the iPad is very lovely!

YougreatPumpkinmousse · 18/10/2011 15:25

You of course. In our house we have 2 iPhones, 2 Ipads and 2 Macbooks - no such thing as overkill!

nogoodusernamesleft · 18/10/2011 15:32

I have both too, was using the phone before but now use my iPad all the time at home! We are family of geeks as well, 2 iPads, 3 iPhones, a mac and a laptop! Love my iPad most though! Grin plus you can use it as a Kindle - what's not to love?

Byeckersiambloodyscarylike · 18/10/2011 15:34

I have both too, definitely use both enough to warrant it!

chopchopbusybusy · 18/10/2011 15:37

If you can afford it go ahead. I have an iPhone, but find the (family) iPad more useful for some things.

I have both too. Definitely no such thing as gadget overkill :)

I've got an iPad and an android smart phone whichis v similar to an iPhone. I use my iPad much more, faster, bigger screen, easier to type. Use the kindle app for reading books on. Watch catch up tv. More memory for more apps. Download rental films from iTunes and watch on iPad.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 18/10/2011 15:43

I have a htc desire and ipad, both equally fab and used for different things.

Dillydollydaydream · 18/10/2011 15:43

I have an iPhone and iPad. Also have an iMac but that doesn't get used unless I'm sorting photos, editing etc.
There's definitely a place for both an iPad and iPhone.

TechnoViking · 18/10/2011 17:46

If you have an iphone / android and are planning on getting an ipad. You can use the phone as a wifi hotspot so don't need to spend extra on a 3G ipad. Grin

trixymalixy · 18/10/2011 17:50

How do you do that techno?

I have both too. I prefer the iPad, but use my iPhone out and about for surfing the web, emailing and kindle.

Hulababy · 18/10/2011 17:52

TechnoViking - how do I do that?

LoveInAColdGrave · 18/10/2011 17:56

I have both, they're very different really. Also, how, Techno?

TechnoViking · 18/10/2011 17:58

I don't have an iphone myself, so forgive me if I'm a bit off. Under settings, there should be a sub setting for personal wifi or personal network, I believe.

For Android you can just download the Wifi Hotspot app.

From the ipad you then browse for the network created from the phone and voila.

Thanks all - sound like I'll be getting an iPad then, hooray!! One further question, what size should I get? I don't intend to use it for movies or too much music on it, so I don't think i need the 64Mb one. I was going to go for the 32mb but I have a niggling voice at the back of my head saying I should just go for the biggest one because you'll never complain about having too much memory, but running out of memory is a problem. I could just stretch to the big one if I thought it was these sensible thing to do.

That's really interesting about turning my phone into a wifi hotspot, I didn't know about that. However, I'm on a Tesco contract and a quick google would suggest they have not enabled that for their customers. Bah!

I think only orange and three and possible t mobile allow their iPhones to wifi hotspot. Vodafone and O2 do but think you have to pay for a tethering pack.

I've got a 32gb iPad and I think it will always be big enough. I'm not planning on storing movies on it and only a few photos. So just need the space for a bit of music and some apps.

VivaLeBeaver · 18/10/2011 23:40

Just looked, I've got 530 songs on mine, 103 apps and 35 photos and have used just over 10gb of space.

Piffpaffpoff · 19/10/2011 08:53

Oh dear, just read my last post and see I got my Megs and Gigs mixed up. The very idea of a 32Mb iPad is quite funny I suppose.... Anyway, yes I think 32G will do, my iPhone is 32, has about 1000 songs and 1100 photos and a lot of apps and it still has 10g free. So that's decided! Thanks all for your opinions. Now I'm off to browse accessories...this could get costly!

I don't have a tethering pack for my HTC through vodafone. It works as a Wifi hotspot just fine.

If you buy a new iPad2, it will come with IOS5 which has icloud. iCloud means you get 5GB of data storage free, BUT anything in your iTunes isn't counted towards that. So if you have films and music in iTunes you get to store them all on t'internet for free. Which means that your iphone can share and access your itunes as well and you can dont need the 64GB ipad2.

Hope that helps.

Methe · 19/10/2011 11:59

We have 2 4s's and Ipad2 and a MacBook Pro.

One can never have too many Apple products IMO.

BadgersPaws · 19/10/2011 12:00

"So if you have films and music in iTunes you get to store them all on t'internet for free. Which means that your iphone can share and access your itunes as well and you can dont need the 64GB ipad2."

Playing stuff from iCloud still requires that the stuff is downloaded onto the iPad, and if there's no room you can't do it.

You'll also only want to download when you're on a WIFI point, otherwise you'll chew threw your 3G data allowance in no time at all.

So there still is an advantage to having a bigger iPad. Firstly you've got what you want when you're on the go. Secondly you don't have to do the "what do I delete so I can put song X on here?" dance that those of us with smaller devices have to do all the time :)

TechnoViking · 19/10/2011 12:04

Fair enough so make sure the ipad is same size as iphone. Or did I miss that part? Grin

At least you applers don't have the "what do i delete from phone memory" dance, that us HTC folk do. Buggering thing.

RustyBear · 19/10/2011 17:44

With the iCloud Photostream, you can take a photo on your iphone and it will appear when it feels like it instantly on your ipad so you can show it to people on a nice big screen.

TechnoViking · 19/10/2011 17:55

This is going to be funny when families share itunes accounts. Parents or kids taking pics of things they shouldn't popping up on each others phones. Grin

RustyBear · 19/10/2011 19:43

Not only photos -apparently iMessages also appear on every device associated with the apple ID....
