Have been doing a document for ages and ages (over the phone with a colleague)

Juts finished the final tricky bits tonight, pressed SAVE, closed it down Sad emailed it to colleague but hse has opened it up and it is the old unfinished version.

i can't find the finally-bloody-finished version

PLEASE tell me where I might find it

Sad

did you open it from an email before pressing save? if so, it might be saving somewhere other than my documents.

open another email attachment, select save as and see where is saves these files to.

daffsntulips · 29/09/2010 22:41

i am searching for a word that wouldn't be on anything else, it is searching the entire c drive and have ticked show hidden files and non-indexed files.

It needs to be done by 4pm tomorrow but would have been better if i'd emailed it tonight Hmm
i need my colleague to help rememeber everyting we included so it will ahve to wait til tomorrow.
I won't be able to sleep for thinking about it now.

it is still searching, so will wait for it to finish before i go to bed

will update

thank you all for trying to help

Have you checked your emails?

I have had this happen, where I was working on a document opened from an email. Windows saves the changes to the document in the email rather than in My Documents or wherever.

Might be worth trawling through your inbox and Sent items just to be sure?

BadgersPaws · 29/09/2010 23:08

Windows Search is rubbish, I wouldn't trust it to find an elephant in my fridge.

Try doing a search from a command prompt, I'm not on a Windows box right now so this is from memory...

Find the command prompt, it should be in the Accessories Group in the start menu.

Then presuming that you've got one disk drive and it's C then enter c:

then enter:
cd c:\

Then enter:
dir /s /p *.ppt
and
dir /s /p *.pptx

And for good measure if you know one a bit of the file name then try this too (the stars mean match anything).
dir /s /p bitoffilename.*

It might turn something up if a copy of the file is hiding in some obscure place...

Check Office temporary files

C:\ Documents and Settings\Application Data\Microsoft

Also check AutoSave files
C :\ Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Temp

AutoSave files are usually in the format
pptxxx.tmp where xxx is the a number.

More info about AutoSave and recovering powerpoint tmp files

badgers paw- it seems to have found something saves at 22.16 last night but now how do i open it?

nannynick - i am struggling to find the temporary folder, this is Windows Vista and that is another pile of RUBBISH

the problem is that i 'saved' it as the same name so when i search using the file name everyhting i find comes up with Tuesday's document not the one we finishefd yesterday.

I need to go to work soon and won't be able to search anymore as it is 'saved' (lost) on a desk top

the ammoint of time i have spent looking for it i could have re-typed it had it not been a joint-effort-document

oh brilliant
do you mean it found it in the command prompt?
can you post what it says?
(You can get your post deleted if it has your name in it, or whatever)

daffsntulips · 30/09/2010 08:03

it says

29/09/2010 22.02 197,120 IdealJourneyStarting%20Point{1}.ppt

then underneath

c:Users\MYNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Low\Content.IE5\HDML0WO2

OP posts:
daffsntulips · 30/09/2010 08:06

the prompt keeps finding lots of versions as it tells me to press any key to continue

I feel slightly more hopeful.

but of course need to go to work at 8.15

BadgersPaws · 30/09/2010 08:26

Find those files that it talks about and move them into some other folder (for example one on your desktop) as soon as possible.

For example use Windows Explorer and go to c:Users\MYNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Tem porary Internet Files\Low\Content.IE5\HDML0WO2 then fine that .ppt file and copy it to your desktop.

Once there you should be able to open it by double clicking on it.

It is important to get them out of the folders that they're currently in as some of them might be temporary folders that at some point Windows might think "oh you don't need this anymore" and trash or reuse it.

StealthPolarBear · 30/09/2010 09:00

:( she'll have gone

daffsntulips · 30/09/2010 20:07

yes, Stealth, I had gone. Grin

We re-did it all Sad but I still want to solve the mystery.

not tonight though cos I am really tired - I usually go to bed at 10 and last night it was way after 11 then i was awake at 5.30 thinking about it again.

I will update later.

Thank you to everyone who tried to help me find it.
