Mispronounced plant names

[Yamadori]

I've come across a few doozies in my time, but I was in the garden centre this morning and as I went in I passed two ladies chatting. One of them said "I want to get a Thunderbill".

Er... a what? Ten minutes later I came across them both again, strolling around the shrubs section. She was clutching a Berberis thunbergii. 😁

Has anyone else heard any good ones?

@Bideshi Also I say daylia. Don't know any real gardeners who say dahlia.

Just checked in a load of other languages (Swedish, German, Polish, Bulgarian, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic) and it's all dah- not day-. It's always good to know what to ask for in the garden centre while on holiday!

... Like others, I also enjoy disagreeing on things that don't really matter.

I'm going to try to remember but not say that. Might come in handy for scrabble.

It's always good to know what to ask for in the garden centre while on holiday! Don't be doin' dat. Leave forrin plants where they belong.

In this part of England a lot of people call it a mountain ash. It isn't an ash, but that doesn't put them off...

It's because the leaves looked similar. Same way you get things called Pine-apple, pea-Nut and Grape-fruit. Or Elephant Seal, Leopard Seal, Sea Horse, etc, etc, etc. Normal human pragmatism to think 'what's that? It looks a bit like....'.

I think they're great, as they provide clues to cultural content and knowledge where plants/animals have been part of human experience for all these many thousands of years - especially the female voices that were excluded from history outside of those names.

Yes I know. I volunteer at a tree nursery and have two hundred bonsai trees in my garden.

Thanks, it's been a nightmare this past few weeks keeping up with the watering of all those damn pots though, boy am I glad we've had rain now.

@Yamadori oh my goodness yes. We moved in October in order to have a proper garden at last, I went a bit bonkers and bought a load of plants too quickly because I was champing at the bit, and then we discovered that the soil is awful and I couldn't just put things in but we needed a lot more planning and preparation work.
Consequently we have a lot of things I'm trying to keep alive in pots! Plus the garden itself which we're slowly working on. This summer has been brutal for watering and I haven't dared go away without practically telling DH if he let any of my plants die I might have to divorce him. 😂 I did have to go away a couple of times but leaving my watering duties was both a wrench and a relief.
I've only lost a couple of things. Very very relieved to have rain now! ☔️
