Mispronounced plant names

I've come across a few doozies in my time, but I was in the garden centre this morning and as I went in I passed two ladies chatting. One of them said "I want to get a Thunderbill".

Er... a what? Ten minutes later I came across them both again, strolling around the shrubs section. She was clutching a Berberis thunbergii. 😁

Has anyone else heard any good ones?

Either is acceptable. I think medical people say parəˈsɛtəmɒl

I admit I used to be a "Cotton -easter" too. Also a "Camper-noola" (campagnula), until I heard someone say it the proper way.

I hear it both ways, likewise Hyacinth as both Hiya-sinth (like Bouquet!) and Hi-AY-sinth.

She was Hyacinth Bucket, and it's ˈhʌɪəsɪn(t)θ.

I can't stand the way Monty and basically everyone else can't pronounce anemone properly, including a specialist anemone grower featured on Gardeners' World! Embarrassing.

I'm coming to the opinion that's there's no wrong way to say plant names and that's completely ignoring local accents, vernacular names or the 'correct' pronunciation because of how the names evolved.

I say cycle paths and nasty-urshums because it amuses me and my family and harms no-one. The plants don't care. If someone who doesn't know me overhears and they roll their eyes, I don't care. If they are amused, that's brilliant.

If the correct pronunciation is important to someone else, that's fine too, as though my opinion on how someone else speaks should count for anything. Whatever helps people enjoy flowers, their or anything gardens is great imo. Good humoured disagreement is still communication, can't have too much of that. I've enjoyed this thread, learned stuff and it will be dandillyons going forward.

I only learned how to say Heuchera yesterday (assuming the person who said hooker-a to me was right?)

As for anemone, it bloody well should be anenome! Sounds much better.
(Probably not a hill to die on, though.)

Hewtchera. The name is from von Heucher, and would be 'Hoy-chera' in German, with the ch being the German one.
