How is your garden coping in this heat?

Just that really!

I have kept up an evening watering schedule and sometimes a bit of morning if the night has been warm and dry, but some things are still so sad and scorched! I am hoping once the weather calms down a bit some hard cut backs will help things to flourish again. I have lost a few things entirely which I’m gutted about, lupins for one, quite a few sweet williams, and a couple of herbs which I’m surprised about.

How is yours faring? What have you found is super resistant? Have you lost anything particularly special to you?

Most plants seem to be ok, apart from
the bottom branches of the tomatoes which look a bit brown, but the grass looks quite forlorn ☹️

Octavia64 · 14/07/2026 20:29

Badly.

some is ok - olives and rosemary and oregano.

The magnolia is sulking and my courgettes are really struggling,

Unconvinced8768 · 14/07/2026 20:30

It’s all a bit barren!!
lost some little bedding plants and the passion flower is very sulky. Roses seem happy though!

Oh my magnolia is leafless! I am hoping it comes back. It’s so depressing when you have nurtured and loved these things that this heat can take them away in such a short period of time.

The buddleia is going mad as usual...dry weather doesn't bother it. The lavender and heathers are covered in bees and butterflies too. I grew Cosmos for the first time this year... they are surviving.... just. My lawn won't need mowing though

Myfluffyblanket · 14/07/2026 20:34

My garden is difficult at the best of times but these heat waves have pretty much ended all hope it may have had for this Summer. Things in pots are dying...even though I water them. Don't get me started on the 'lawn'.

palona · 14/07/2026 20:34

The grass will recover even if it goes yellow and looks dead. It will come back, so that's the least of my concerns. I don't have a water butt, so am saving the washing up water in an old black bin. It's so deep though, I'll need to put a rope on a bucket (like at a well ha ha) to get the water out from halfway down!

I might just throw the washing up bowl water directly on to the plants! I'd save the shower water if I could get it down the stairs without me killing myself or spilling it everywhere. I'm glad I didn't get a greenhouse yet. And if I do, I think it will be used for drying clothes in Winter 😊

Plumcorkyduff · 14/07/2026 20:37

My outdoor tomatoes aren’t doing that great, neither are my runner beans. I’ve got a massive parsley which for the first time ever is going yellow and one branch seems to died on on one of my acers. My shasta daisies are struggling. Salvias generally ok, as are all the shrubs.

I was contemplating today whether to try and replant next year around more drought tolerant species, especially in pots. I’ve got eleventy billion (well , nine) water butts and they are pretty much empty.

Owninterpreter · 14/07/2026 20:38

The magnolia is unhappy. The acer has scorched and curled up. A number of little perennials just gave up and died. My Salvia is a very poor show. Rosemary olive and oregano doing well.

Yellowpapersun · 14/07/2026 20:40

We've been watering the plants every night and everything is ok so far. Both clematis and the roses are thriving. The grass is brown and crunchy but it'll recover!

ForPinkDuck · 14/07/2026 20:42

My rosemary has gone mad. Tred beans for the 1st year, poor show.

EasternStandard · 14/07/2026 20:43

The acers are struggling

Myfluffyblanket · 14/07/2026 20:44

The Japanese anemones are still doing their magnificent invasionary thing. I made the mistake of planting them in the ground rather than in pots. My mother did warn me they could get a bit bossy; I did not take heed.
Convolvulus, sticky willy, brambles and ivy all happy as pigs in muck. I'm tempted to dig up everything and lay concrete instead.

palona · 14/07/2026 20:45

@Plumcorkyduff The Shasta daisy display was fabulous up to the start of this run of heatwave. I don't know what went wrong, I watered them vigorously but they look so droopy and half dead now. I think I'll cut them back a bit and hope for the best. in between them are salvia and bowles mauve and they're doing great. Sad face for the daisies......

palona · 14/07/2026 20:47

I think Mediterranean plants are the only ones going to survive if this heatwave lasts much longer. Lavender, thyme, rosemary are galloping away here. I don't water them much.

bakermummy21 · 14/07/2026 20:47

my small acer is struggling and lost some annual daisy type plants despite watering. Thinking I’m going to try a lot more Mediterranean style plants next year and larger pots. I’ve got too many small pots.

GentleSheep · 14/07/2026 20:50

Tomatoes are doing really well, they like the heat. Normally struggle to grow them here. Not many slugs/snails about which is a bonus, petunias doing well. Potted shrubs not happy, even with watering. Ferns not happy where they are catching the afternoon sun.

Plumcorkyduff · 14/07/2026 20:50

@palona mine too. I love them. Especially the fluffy ones. I grew lots from seed so kind of feel even more of a sad face that all my efforts are droopy or crispy😢.
@Myfluffyblanket i said today I might start painting the gravel instead 😂

Bizarrely, my rosemary cuttings are thriving in the greenhouse and the tomato plants are having a roaring time in the greenhouse! Tomatoes are redding up a treat, I had one the other day and it was lovely. We have had the door and windows open during the day and sometimes spray the glass to create more humidity, but I’m grateful for the greenhouse this year as weirdly the plants in there seem happier than some outside!

I do wonder if, as the suggestion is we will experience this every year, it is worth looking at some plants that are better at coping in the heat. I have some Californian poppies who have been very happy. Maybe we need to reconsider what we plant. And plan for more shade! More trees and big shrubs?

My pear tree looks really sad, it wasn’t very happy last year tbh.

Everything looks dry, could really do with some rain!!

whirlyhead · 14/07/2026 21:04

My bougainvilleas, especially the 10+ year old one are having a grand old time but the newer lavender is looking a bit miserable. The plumbagos are fine with watering but my jacaranda tree is a bit grumpy. I’m chucking loads of water at it too.

I've got the same problem with Japanese Anemones too, I have two pink ones and each year they get larger despite me cutting them back and digging bits out. They suffer in this weather though I do water them as they flop badly, they are pretty and the bees like them.

I'm thinking I might dig them out at the end of summer, maybe pass on some of the clump to anyone that wants any and pot up one or two to keep.

Supersimkin7 · 14/07/2026 21:06

Geraniums and pelargoniums loving it.

2-litre bottle of water on every potted shrub daily, roses very cheerful albeit petals are scorched.

I got two lollipop rose bushes in pots free from the florist because their leaves were so burnt - they’ve come back smiling.

Wildflowers dropped dead instantly. Herbs grumbly, even the basil.

I agree. I’ve got a lot of trees and shrubs, but also a big garden. I love colourful plants in my pots, but will definitely be looking for plants able to cope in this weather for next year. Oh well, a lot of the fun of gardening is in the planning!
