How do I get rid of spiders please?!

So I'm out of work at the minute and my absolutely, lovely, amazing DH has suggested I use my time wisely by completely gutting out and cleaning the shed. There's old paint tins, old punctured swimming pools in etc so I will need to do a few tip runs.

Only.. it's full of spiders, like big hairy massive spiders. I've known queen bees go in there and not make it out alive.
I'm having the heebie jeebies just thinking about it! Does anyone know of a way I can evict these spiders of their own accord before I go in please? 🙏🏻
I tried fresh lemon pieces before but this didn't work 🫣

Spiders don't like conkers. I know it isn't the right season for conkers yet, but maybe it's the smell, so try some horse chestnut leaves scattered about.

Dombasle · 01/08/2023 18:38

If you evict them where do you think they will go?

Up the path and into your home, of course!

You need a hazmat suit and a Henry or Hetty hoover and your husband must promise to empty and change the bag outside when you're done.

cuckyplunt · 01/08/2023 18:40

Or you could just leave them alone, they’ll get out of your way.
i am sending all sorts of bad Karma your way if you hoover the poor things up.

YoSof · 01/08/2023 18:41

If you don’t like spiders, I would suggest this is not the job for you. Can you do something else and your husband sort the shed?

Please don’t hoover/kill them.

Wiccan · 01/08/2023 18:42

You can use mint mouth spray . If you don't have any squirt a teaspoon of toothpaste into a spray bottle. Spray all over where they are . They will be out of there in no time .

Sorry . Fill with water and shake .

I don't want to kill them at all if we come across one in the house I will get a pint glass and paper and put it out (if it's not bigger than £1 coin, otherwise DH is called whilst I scream on a chair)

I just wondered if there is something I can buy to evict them (preferably not into my house ahhhhh 🫣)
There are some lovely trees right at the back of the garden they could live in... or the neighbours' sheds 🤣
I just hate going in there as it is so I can't stand the thought of cleaning the shed out I know they will scare me every time I move a paint pot I'll freak out!

The only other job he will be doing is cleaning the guttering out and I can't swap to do this as I'm not great with heights, plus I'm way too short anyway so he needs to do this job 🤔

The only other possibility is some Dutch courage before I go in!? 🥃💪

I read on another thread that a study had been done, and spiders are so scared of humans that they actually cry when one is near.

I don’t like them, I tolerate them in the house unless they’re near my bed then they get relocated but I don’t think I could clear out a shed full of them. Good luck!

I feel for you , I hate spiders I did a make over on my greenhouse this month and my god the size of them 😲 got my husband to get them out. 😉

YoSof · 01/08/2023 18:57

I cannot find any evidence that spiders do actually cry by the way, and I realise it is highly unlikely, but it made me less scared of them!

Speedweed · 01/08/2023 18:58

I sympathise op. The only way to evict them is to go in every few days and dust to get rid of their webs, sweep the floor etc. They'll move on if they keep being disturbed, although it's a burden to clean your shed as often as your front room!

immergeradeaus · 01/08/2023 18:58

Hang out your washing in the dark. They will make a beeline for it. Or a spider line.

I agree I found this with my garden room I clean once a week in there now not a spider anywhere 🙂

MyBrownEyedHandsomeBoy · 01/08/2023 19:47

Oh lord I don't have time for that I struggle with housework once a week with toddler in tow 🤣🤣

I did hear of a spider bomb sort of thing you can buy but I've not looked into it and I don't know if it's humane??

I think it'll end up being a Dutch courage job 🥃🥃🥃 (child will be with DM) 🤣🤣 I will get tipsy and just bloody do it 💪💪💪 fuck

Burn down the shed - sorts out both the spiders and the tidying job in one go!

Cheeesus · 01/08/2023 19:53

This is just peppermint and eucalyptus oil and apparently repels them. But tbh you might be better just killing them with a bomb rather than making them homeless.

Or ask your OH to pull everything out and then you sort it out.

Crying spiders 🕷 😢 feel so bad for them now. I remember one on the bathroom floor once that saw me and hid in the fold of a towel that was on the floor. It scrunched itself up so small trying to hide from me, wee leg sticking out. Reminded me of a toddler trying to hide but doing it really badly. I felt so sad for it (I didn't kill it btw!)

MyBrownEyedHandsomeBoy · 01/08/2023 21:12

@Mmmmdanone awwww don't 🥺 I love animals, all animals.. I don't know why as humans we are so terrified of spiders, yet if we see a dog, cat, rabbit or whatever we cooo instantly. I just don't know what it is about them that scare us so much yet they are just tiny insects really.
Although I did know of a girl I worked with who had time off sick through a spider bite, her chest came up in like hives all over and Dr said spider bite!?

Yet if a dog bit us on the right place we could just die!?
Crazy.
I'm just going to gin and bear it! I'll go in, gut the shed and then come up with the most humanely way to evict them (ensuring all my doors, windows etc are fully sealed at the time) 😆

IcakethereforeIam · 02/08/2023 00:51

Don't evict them to trees. If they liked trees they'd already be living there with the other tree living spiders. Do your neighbours have a reachable garage, outhouse or similar you could dump them on? Sympathy though, house spiders can be, relatively, massive.

I didn't know we made them cry 😢
