Rose and clematis combination

We've finally prepared a wall for climbers. It's south facing, though gets some shade in the day. Clematis has done well there before, but I don't want another Montana as it was too vigorous. I'd love a pink rose and white clematis combination. Any suggestions for which ones work well together?

I planted a Gertrude Jekyll by David Austin to grow up a wall. It was a bare root, planted in winter and it's small atm but the flowers are beautiful.

I just bought a cheap white clematis from the supermarket to go with it, can't remember the type. And also bought a Peach Melba climbing rose to go with it too. Excited to see them grow over the next few years.

Here is my Gertrude Jekyll - so many blooms this year. I've got a pinky/mauve clematis in the background, but not sure of the name...

Constance Spry is a lovely climber, only blooms once, l have also recently planted Eden and Jasmina, the small nodding bell shape clematis go well with roses they are very pretty but don't overwhelm the rose. I have Roguchi, Sonnett and Buckland beauty, got all mine from a clematis nursery online.

I don't have them together but I have double delight white clematis which grows well but isn't prolific and I have a Handel climbing rose, it's white with bright pink edging. It smells lovely too.

If you’re anywhere near Shropshire I would recommend a trip to the David Austin rose garden and look at all the climbing roses. Such a nice day out.

Geneticsbunny · 13/06/2023 15:45

Clematis grandiflora and a rosa glauca?

Gertrude jekyll is a lovely rose, but just be aware it has a shrub form and a climbing form and make sure you get the right one! ( looking at my shrub rose that should have been a climber!)

Sadly, not near Shropshire. I would love to spend a day looking at roses. I do like a Generous Gardener.

I have generous gardener and it is beautiful.

However it doesn’t hold its flowers for very long and the colour is quite subtle so it might be tricky to find a clematis that didn’t wash it out in comparison.

I have David Austin Rose 'Lady of the Lake' and absolutely adore it. Pink buds and then paler as it opens. Long flowering and the open flower means it's great for pollinators too.

Not clematis I know, but I've just bought a honeysuckle to grow up through the rose and think the pink/yellow of the honeysuckle will look and smell lovely with the rose.

@starlingsnest ooh I didn't know that. It does look a bit more shrub like atm but it is only new - I've just checked my order and it was definitely the climbing version.

@alltheusernamesaretakennow it looks beautiful in your garden, how long did it take to get that big? I've always admired Gertrude from afar, have seen a few around and in garden centres.

Geneticsbunny · 13/06/2023 18:31

@BunnyBettChetwynnd that is stunning

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 13/06/2023 19:15

There aren’t many white clematis that flower at the same time as roses - is this the effect you were after? If so, have you thought about purple clematis and pale pink rose? I have Etoille Violette clematis and rose New Dawn which flower together.

This is a good shout actually, I have new dawn at the front of my house and it's lovely and flowers so well compared to some of my other climbers. Smells lush too

CosmosQueen · 13/06/2023 19:26

I have a white clematis growing through Handel climbing rose, and this one on my front house wall.
There’s a Princess Diana clematis on my white small flowered patio rose and Nelly Moser in my Margaret Merrill, Albertine has a deep pink clematis (no idea what it’s called, bought cheaply in the supermarket!)
Basically every climbing rose will have a clematis 😊

I don't mind if they flower at different times as this would add colour for longer. My garden is tiny and cottagey so everything counts. I love old fashioned pink roses the most, and am more flexible about the colour of the clematis.

Hi - thanks DottyDry - it does smell lovely too! This is probably around 7 years old.

Another place to see a good display of roses is just north of London:

ObiWanKanobi · 14/06/2023 07:52

We haven't got a clematis but we have climbing roses growing with jasmine along a pagoda. It really looks lovely as the jasmine gives good overall coverage with lovely pops of roses coming through. Just waiting for the jasmine to flower but when it does I will try and upload a photo.

Hope you find what you are looking for.

Our Gertrude is looking similar - it is a fantastic rose - beautiful scent, repeat flowering.

You could pair it with pretty much any clematis tbh - we have a mid purple large bloomed no idea of variety growing on the other side of an arbour - looking forward to Gertrude meeting clematis very much.

Summer snow is very pretty.

JulieHoney · 14/06/2023 11:10

Generous Gardener wants sun which I didn't realise when I planted it - I have two and the more shaded one is miserable. It's such a subtle colour I think itwon't give the colour combination you want. The scent is sublime, though.

Gertrude Jekyll is an absolute barnstorming rose, amazing colour and scent. Would look good with many clematis.

Friths · 14/06/2023 11:19

Oh thank you. I do want an actual pink rose so Gertrude J might be the one. I'm going to a garden centre that stocks both at the weekend and can't wait. My life is pretty wild 🫤
