Aaarghhhh - thunderstorm

The sky went dark about an hour ago, I've been listening to the constant sound of thunder, watching the approaching storm on www.lightningmaps.org and what does it do? Veer off and miss my garden by about half a mile.

So it is still parched out there, and I'm going to have to go and water after all.

How annoying!! Off to check out lightening maps.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 12/06/2023 15:32

Weatherfolk not even pretending we're going to get a drop of rain. Sigh.

Valour · 12/06/2023 15:32

Where are you? I have a terrible.terrible phobia of storms and have been obsessed with the lightning maps all day...

lastminutewednesday · 12/06/2023 15:33

If it makes you feel better we had the storm. It lasted all of 5 minutes and an hour later the ground looks dry again so I will also have to water Anyway!

SBAM · 12/06/2023 15:38

I saw the clouds, heard the (faint) thunder - not a drop of rain. It’s been weeks. Still, I’m sure lugging watering cans up and down the garden will be good for my muscles.

CosmosQueen · 12/06/2023 15:38

We’re sitting here, just north of Bath, listening to nonstop thunder but tiddly squat rain. Somewhere local must be copping it but it isn’t us. Again.

PuffinsRocks · 12/06/2023 15:40

LOL you can have some of our thunderstorm. I had my washing out when it started. The wind was so bad with it that it's blown our slide all the way down the garden. And it's been going for over an hour now.

Oldnproud · 12/06/2023 15:44

I'm currently watching the storm clouds and listening to the rolls of thunder, hoping they will come right over us. Its very near, but still hard to tell if it will miss us or not.

The exact same thing happened yesterday teatime. My neighbour and I were both in our gardens and both doubtful that we would get the rain, as it looked to be passing just to the east of us. Two minutes later it began and we got 30 minutes of good, heavy (but not damaging) rain. The soil still looks damp in most places today and the nearly empty water butts refilled to past the halfway point.

I've got my fingers crossed for a repeat of that now, though I'm still sitting outside at the moment ...

I'm 14 miles south of Bath and we've had nothing, no rain or thunder. Haven't had any of either for weeks.

FictionalCharacter · 12/06/2023 15:57

We had a belter of a thunderstorm yesterday, extremely heavy rain and HAIL! Windy too. Flooded the bottom half of our garden and the neighbours’. Greenhouse flooded. Sheds damaged. The water drained down fairly quickly though.
And it’s raining again now.
We really did need rain, but gentler rain for longer would have been better than a monsoon type downpour, because when there’s extremely heavy rain when the soil is dried out and hard, most of it gets lost as runoff.

We're just east of Bath. Nothing here either. Was really hoping for that supposed downpour.

TakeMe2Insanity · 12/06/2023 16:03

Heard some thunder in SWLondon, maybe 5 droplets of rain and then nothing!

Yamadori · 12/06/2023 16:06

At least it's a bit cooler. There's faint rumbling away in the distance, but not a measly drop. I've been out and watered now.

Hang your washing out, that will bring the rain!

viques · 12/06/2023 16:08

We had promising thundery noises earlier, and even a bit of rain, but not enough to wet a whistle let alone a dry garden.

@WhatTheHeckyPeck and @GooseberryPatch Honestly it’s so exasperating!
At least the washing has dried 😊 but more watering tonight 🙄

Popetthetreehugger · 12/06/2023 16:14

My daughter rang from Margate this morning, her and the dogs got soaked , us , a 5 minute half hearted shower , I’m going to look up thunder and lightning maps x

timetorefresh · 12/06/2023 16:25

Lots of dark clouds and thunder. Not a spot of rain

TakeMe2Insanity · 12/06/2023 16:26

I take it back, we’ve had 10 mins of extremely heavy rain. No hailstones or lightning.

timetorefresh · 12/06/2023 16:30

Oh tell a lie. Some rain is here

timetorefresh · 12/06/2023 16:35

Gone again. That won't fix my garden

GooseberryPatch · 12/06/2023 17:11

@CosmosQueen We just got approximately three minutes of rain. Useless.
