Does anyone's clematis have buds yet?

I planted a clematis Montana in Autumn and I'm not sure it's survived the winter.

It's supposed to flower in May, there's buds but they look brown like last years.

Does anyone have buds on their dead looking clematis this early on?

I don't have a montana but I've got other Clematis varieties with buds on.

My Clemmi (No idea what variety) has tonnes of new growth but no flower buds yet. Too early for NE England we currently have snow!

Beebumble2 · 08/03/2023 12:37

Some of mine have, some haven’t. It doesn’t seem to be variety specific so I guess it’s their position in the garden.

All my Clematis (alpina, montana, and three autumn flowering ones) are still heaps of brown stems. I’m not worrying about them yet

Ohthebanality · 08/03/2023 14:04

Yes and I live on a cold and exposed hill in NW England. Their in a sunny garden though.

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 08/03/2023 15:42

My one that I planted at the same time as urs has one. But I will take that. As this is the fourth I have tried to grow and the winter didn’t kill it. Go me.

Thanks for the replies, mines in a sheltered shady spot so I'm just hoping for progress when the sun eventually makes an appearance.

Loads of growths on various clematis, but none on my montana - which was new in last year, but is near to another new in last year one which does have growth.

Beebumble2 · 08/03/2023 22:29

Sometimes newly planted clematis with one or two previous stalks, send up completely new shoots later in Spring from the base that grow stronger.

Chasingsquirrels · 08/03/2023 22:32

Yes, I always plant then deeper in the hope of additional growth from underneath the soil level.

I was looking for buds today but clematis is still sleeping.

pandora206 · 09/03/2023 09:45

Mine always look like dead sticks at this time of year, and I start to panic and think winter has killed them off. Then, lo and behold, they spring back into life in about a month's time.

I think mine died in the bad freeze before winter. Nothing is happening to mine just some very sad looking brown stalks

Please don’t give it up yet. It’s worth waiting till later in the year to see if it’s just a late developer.

We’re in a relatively new house and have three clematis … one has flowered already, another looks like it’s about to, and the other looks completely dead - I think the frost before Christmas did it in. We shall see I suppose!

cobblers123 · 10/03/2023 20:46

All mine have buds, Montana, General Sikorsky, Guernsey Cream, Blue Angel and Edward Markham.

Bideshi · 10/03/2023 20:48

It'll be fine. It comes from high up in the Himalaya.

WobblyLondoner · 11/03/2023 17:54

Mine all have buds though some are much more advanced than others - various varieties. I'm in London.

Beebumble2 · 12/03/2023 12:44

Just been out to check, despite last weeks snow, all are sprouting now that the suns out. It’s quite strong when it’s shining- 31degrees in the greenhouse!

Ohthebanality · 12/03/2023 18:57

I checked mine and even with all the freezing cold, it now has green shoots.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 12/03/2023 19:01

Mine HAD lots of buds. I was pruning it and chopping off the dead stems. You guessed it, I chopped the wrong stem…..gutted.

winelove · 12/03/2023 19:04

A tiny little sign of life but not much. I am optimistic!

You might have done yourself a favour and it will put on stronger new growth.

My Etoile Violette is now flat on the ground as the large lilac tree supporting it fell over in the snow.

I thought a newbie clematis I had planted in the autumn had died as well, but I've just noticed a completely new shoot at the base in the last couple of days. The rest of it still looks completely dead though!
