I’m thinking of starting off some chillis. Even though I know that I’ll fill up the available window sills too soon….and will probably regret it.

Sweet peas, but that's it for the time being, because of the low light levels - especially as it's so gloomy!

I would hold off for a while if I were you, and wait for a spell when we might actually have a bit of sunlight!

PritiPatelsMaker · 08/01/2023 21:20

Just Basil so far although I might do Chillis tomorrow.

I haven’t even ordered my seeds yet!

TheIsaacs · 09/01/2023 11:40

I might do some onions at the weekend, but I think I’ll probably wait till mid feb for anything else, even sweet peas. I sowed early last year and lots of them failed and then we had all sorts of crazy weather in the spring so everything outside was ruined too. Going to be a bit more conservative this year to try to minimise losses.

Rosit · 09/01/2023 11:47

I’ve started off some chillis - but just in damp paper towel on the radiator. Left it way too last year and only got a few chillis.

I didn't know that you could start them off like that!

greenacrylicpaint · 09/01/2023 21:33

not yet.
can't seem to be able to get the seeds I want atm.

PritiPatelsMaker · 09/01/2023 21:38

What are you after green? Just being nosey Wink

greenacrylicpaint · 09/01/2023 21:44

black cherry tomato
window box tomatos
possibly a cucumber

Espritdescalier · 09/01/2023 21:49

I follow Zoe Woodward on Instagram and she is very emphatic about not starting anything else off until mid-feb due to light levels. I'm itching to get started but she's very convincing. A few wild carrot have stuck their heads up after gap filling a bit late in October but other than that I'm holding out and just potting on my autumn sown stuff for now.

Ferntastical · 10/01/2023 08:22

Nope (except sweet peas that were sown last Autumn).

I am itching to, but will hold off until the end of Jan for chillis, aubergines and peppers.

Mid Feb at the earliest for other crops and flowers.

I have everything ready to go but won't let myself start yet!

DogBowlsAreMyWeapon · 10/01/2023 08:32

Not yet. I sowed too early last year thinking I was being clever and getting a head start - was so bloody cold not much got going.

I’ll get the electric propagator out in March. I’m in the far north of Scotland though so your mileage may vary.

Ifailed · 10/01/2023 08:47

To all PPs posting about chillies, did you know they are perennials that can be over wintered? I've got one in my porch that is covered in immature green fruit that's coming into it's 3rd year.

As to sowing, apart from some broad beans I put in last november, I will wait until February before starting with tomatoes.

DogBowlsAreMyWeapon · 10/01/2023 08:51

My chilli committed suicide in the kitchen window. My house is just too cold. 😔

WilbursWinnie · 10/01/2023 09:08

Nope, not started yet. I didn't have much luck on the windowsill last year so I'm thinking of waiting and just planting outside this year.

Mine too.

I can either give them light in the cold windows or warmth in the dark rooms. They cannot have both Grin

PritiPatelsMaker · 10/01/2023 09:36

Thank you @Espritdescalier. I've found Zoe Woodward and now follow her too Wink

indignatio · 11/01/2023 20:26

So chillis and aubergines have been sown today. DH has just asked why the third bedroom is reading as 20+ degrees, so I had to explain about the propagator, so it was a localised warmth.

Ferntastical · 12/01/2023 08:20

No! I must resist sowing the chillis for at least another week! Grin

Some motivation here to remind me not to bother sowing much else until mid Feb (the earliest), ready for the March light levels...

I planted nastursiums last year (my 2nd lot) for the Cabbage White Butterflies . Used to do this with the DC and just kept on.
I really don't like nastursiums but they grow well , our 2nd lot only perished in the December snow .
I have some of the seeds harvested so plan to plant these in the little plastic greenhouse .

And raise the pot higher otherwise our cats chase the butterflies <tsk>

HelloMist · 30/01/2023 23:09

Thank you for the graphic, @Ferntastical!

I started some peppers (from supermarket ones, not had a mature fruit from peppers previous years). Also sweet peas because my autumn sown attempt aren't doing too well.

What are people planning to sow in February? Worth a separate thread or could we continue here?

Ferntastical · 31/01/2023 08:53

I broke about a week ago and started my chillis. They've all germinated so now it's a game of keeping them warm and well lit as the grow.

I've also started some cauliflowers, cabbages and brussel sprouts this weekend...

Ferntastical · 31/01/2023 08:54

Also sweet peas because my autumn sown attempt aren't doing too well.

Mine have suffered a terrible mouse attack, so they are all for the compost heap and I've just ordered some fresh seeds to start again!

Alcyone · 31/01/2023 08:59

Celery and Shallots at the weekend. Thinking of doing Aubergine and Peppers today.
