What are you doing in the garden this weekend?

I’ve been waiting for ages for a run of sunny days so my grass would dry out. Spent all day yesterday sowing in pots (tomatoes, courgettes, spinach), clearing twigs and branches off the grass, clearing moss off the drive and turning over compost in various racks. And dried my laundry outside.

Today I’ve got a lot of grass cutting, more seeds to sort, brambles to cut back in the edges and I need to look at a little acer I was given in a pot last year, as I don’t know if this is a good time to put it into something bigger.

How are your gardens going?

I have bought a tiered planter that I am going to build today, and stain hopefully. Then strim the awkward bits of lawn, try boiling water on some resistant weeds, and get the cold frame out.

My seedlings are coming along nicely so need to move them on soon to get more in. Have done a few peas, lettuce, chillies, beetroots and pat choi so far. Need to rotate things around and start some more off!

I've so much moss on the drive and lawn, how do you deal with it?

TheDuchessOfMN · 20/03/2022 08:35

I fed my roses Smile

GeneLovesJezebel · 20/03/2022 08:36

I’ve mowed the lawn twice already this year, and I did the weeding a week or so ago. I’ve nothing to do !

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 20/03/2022 08:37

Sowing my seeds todayand finishing cutting back the shrubs and hedge. DP is going to weed and prepare the veg patches and mow half the lawn (making him leave the other half for daisies and dandelion flowers for insects.) general tidying up as it looks a mess. Bit of fence needs fixing too. Refreshing the compost in the pots. Staring sadly at our spring jasmine that seems to have died in the greenhouse. Playing plant or weed in the gravel bed.

BlueBlueCowWondering · 20/03/2022 08:40

I cut the grass yesterday. Looks lovely now Smile

I think I'm going to take a chair out and sit in the sun and plan.

MrsBertBibby · 20/03/2022 08:43

We have a bunch of big rocks to arrange and place in a new bed, and a Buddleja to cut back.

Some young plants and seedlings to fiddle about with.

Time spent pondering why a tray of seedlings I gave to my dad is twice the size of the identical tray I kept for me.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 20/03/2022 08:45

My gardening time at the moment is the odd 20 minutes when 1 year old is napping.
But yesterday I fed my roses and moved one of them to a sunnier spot.

I also dug out loads of stray grass seedlings from the flower bed that moved in when we re-seeded the lawn last year.

Chasingsquirrels · 20/03/2022 08:46

I need to paint some picket fence pieces before we can put it up and have been waiting for it to warm up so I can do them in the garage - but don't want to waste such a lively day "inside".
I spend yesterday weeding, and still have heaps more to do.
Want to plan my new garden, rather than just shove stuff in haphazardly.
I need weeks and weeks at it 🤣

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 20/03/2022 08:49

I will be accepting that the battery on my lawnmower really is on its last legs and I need a new one (happens every 5 years or so). I need to create more space in my greenhouse for the next batches of seedlings (courgettes, squash, cosmos and tithonia). And I need to decide what to do with my little island bed which needs almost completely stripping out but is full of Alliums which are now coming up.

Debating potting summer bulbs and starting the wildflowers seeding (might frost tonight?)

Has anyone planted a small wildflower meadow area? Any advice?

AllotmentTime · 20/03/2022 08:53

Oo, nice thread.

Yesterday DH and I were maintaining paths and breaking up pallets at the allotment.

Today I will be doing some weeding out the front, cutting back things and planting out a massive transplanted fuchsia that has shown great determination in surviving the winter in an old bag in the growhouse.

SirYawnsAlot · 20/03/2022 08:59

Been trying to pull up the crocosmia that is winging its way through the lawn.
Got lots of weeds that need culling might try cutting then salting the stem. Lawn is patchy and muddy, needs some aeration and seeding. Been given 2 fruit tree saplings, not sure whether to donate them, been looking up how to keep them dwarf as I didn't want another fruit-dropping tree.
With regards to moss on the grass, I used to rake it up and try and seed it, then just decided to work with it and quite enjoyed a springy green lawn which didn't need much cutting.

Workinghardeveryday · 20/03/2022 09:06

I will has dp about moss for you when he wakes up, he has a degree in grass.

Yesterday I bought a new power washer, spend all afternoon doing wood, fencing, summer house. Got loads more to do today. Then need to workout best stain to put on it and make it look fresh and pretty again...
Dp cut grass yesterday

Catname · 20/03/2022 09:23

Yesterday I weeded a bit, planted a couple of pots with hyacinths, and planted some new perennials in the borders before having a big bonfire in the evening (we had a huge pile of conifer prunings from over the winter). Today, I’ve got a couple of shrubs to put in and more weeding.

yamadori · 20/03/2022 09:25

Repotting dozens of bonsai trees.

Pictorial meadows on line has great advice. I haven’t done a meadow but las5 year when dug a new bed I sowed lots of wildflower seed in the gaps between the new perennials. It was amazing. Just a mix from b&q. Lasted all summer.
TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 20/03/2022 10:39

I filled up the two wheelie bins with weeds. Which means I don't have space for all the branches I took of the fruit trees. And so it begins. I get all excited when the bins are emptied and manage to fill them up in an hour of weeding or pruning.

I've planted some seeds, and now I'm having a cuppa before I face turning the compost bins.

PlinkPlankPlunk · 20/03/2022 11:07

Oh yes @TwinkleToesStrikesAgain I feel the same about the wheelie bin; in the winter I scratch around looking for things to make sure it’s full and from March it’s up to the brim as soon as it’s been emptied!

I’ve just signed up for an additional one as even with multiple compost racks and a massive wood pile for the fire I’m creating too much volume of stuff!

Good thread!

Yesterday I tidied up round the side of our house (no plants, my DS's space but covered in debris from building work next door).

Dug up some 3 (more!) cornered bloody leek. Pruned the rose and clematis (this year I've not pruned the latter as drastically as last year - it's one of the non twining ones and is already making great strides; am hoping it will cover more of an arch than last year). Pondered what to plant in the dead-area-where-nothing-will-grow.

Wrote a list of other things to do!

Ecosralayce · 20/03/2022 11:16

couldnt gaarden yesterday as was on a uni open day with teen dc which was annoying as it was lovely weather!
So far this year have:
Weeded and mulched fornt borders, weeded and mulched back borders, a little bit of pond cleaing, cleaned patio, cut back ferns, cleaned patio pots, sorted pots on front garden.
Today though so far: Sown more seeds, moved some germinated seeds from lounge window sill to greenhouse, weeding back border, planted out some foxgloves, planted out sweet pea seedlings,
sadly lawn mower has died ...so need to buy a new one or I would have cut the grass!
still to do today:
Sow more seeds
tidy greenhouse
buy more cobbles for pond edging
sort out leaning storm damaged tree

Moonface123 · 20/03/2022 11:19

Tying in and trimming all my climbers and clematis, l have lots, as well as weeding and repainting fence panels and shed.

Ecosralayce · 20/03/2022 11:21

actually if anyone could tell me why my aster seeds aren't germinating, when I'd be most grateful!
I bought the same seeds last year and they were fab. This year, I have only 2 tiny seedlings out of 2 trays of seed????

jowly · 20/03/2022 11:25

Well I was having a good old sort out in the summerhouse, but then found a spider of prehistoric proportions. So am now in the house having coffee Confused

TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 20/03/2022 11:26

@jowly man eating spiders are the worst
