What are you doing in the garden this weekend?

I’ve been waiting for ages for a run of sunny days so my grass would dry out. Spent all day yesterday sowing in pots (tomatoes, courgettes, spinach), clearing twigs and branches off the grass, clearing moss off the drive and turning over compost in various racks. And dried my laundry outside.

Today I’ve got a lot of grass cutting, more seeds to sort, brambles to cut back in the edges and I need to look at a little acer I was given in a pot last year, as I don’t know if this is a good time to put it into something bigger.

How are your gardens going?

@Comfortableatlast

Waiting for the gardener to come in tomorrow, Grin better that way for all concerned, I have the ideas, he executes the ideas, he has a job, I have a garden I can look at and enjoy and I then support the wine industry by sitting in it with a glass of wine when things warm up.

It took me nigh on twenty five years to realise that DH would rather eat the garden than do anything in it, being busy in work, in and out of Europe and the states on business, was then presented as meh at the weekends, lockdown eventually shot holes in that one, so in came the gardener and peace and harmony have been restored at all levels. Life goals, sounds perfect!

Planted out some plants that have overwintered in the green house, they’re hardy so will stand the odd frost. Painted a planter box that hubby made me, strimmed hemlock hedges, started to clear a bed that’s full of some kind of weed (strappy leaves with rubbish flowers) so I can plant my day lilies and agapanthus. Deciding where to plant all these plants I bought on a whim the other day !

Spent all of yesterday weeding, clipping, dividing, pricking out and mulching. Still need to edge the lawn but ran out of steam.

SockFluffInTheBath · 21/03/2022 10:51

@Furries

Back lawn had its second cut of the year. Front lawn had its first cut. 50% of the edging everywhere had been done. Large gravel area completely weeded.

Also sat for a 5 minute break to admire the first clump of tulips to flower.

Lovely tulips, I do like a bit of red.
Pegasussnail · 21/03/2022 10:55

In off today so I'm going to tidy the leaves around the front of the house.

SockFluffInTheBath · 21/03/2022 10:56

@ValBiro that sounds awful Sad worse things in the world yes but you don’t have to have The Worst Problem to be allowed to be upset. Our neighbour changed some panels recently and I was peeking out more than I’d care to admit.

Watered plants in the cold frame that were very dry. I sowed a mix of red campion and ragged robin in a new border by the garage. My husband moved the grass front and back and I strimmed the edges. I've planted some carex pendula that I grew from a seedpod I picked by the canal.

I was admiring my lobelia tupa that has now got about five shoots on it - very exciting - I grew it from seed and it was the only one that germinated!! Hoping it will flower this year - very exciting. I love gardening!!!!!

DaphneduM · 21/03/2022 11:02

'mowed' of course!!!!

BigWoollyJumpers · 21/03/2022 11:15

I've been weeding and edging the last couple of weeks. I don't work, so have the blessing of being able to pop out most days when the weather is nice. Quite a big garden though, with lots of beds, so it does take quite a lot of time. Been working from driest to wettest, and the wettest beds are still heavy, so hard work. Also been thinning out shrubs, and lifting clumps of vinca, which just gets everywhere. Wish I had never planted it. DH has cut the lawn a few times, and we are actually waiting for our patio to be relaid and pointed, as it all came away over the last couple of years, and looks awful.

Next job to clear out the compost area. Very neglected, everything just chucked in over the last few months. Needs turning, and a great big pile of woody stuff removing.... wonder what we'll find under there - eeek!

DidymusAmbrosius · 21/03/2022 12:47

Current jobs include:

  • cleaning off the patio and pathays with a jet wash, weeding them manually and filling the cracks in with some sharp patio sand to slow down regrowth.
  • giving roses, clematis, honeysuckle, bearded iris and hydrangeas their first feed of the season
  • pruning back the penstemons down to trigger fresh growth for the season
  • giving the lawn a gentle trim
  • walking around and around commentating on what is 'coming up'. This is my favourite job Grin
DidymusAmbrosius · 21/03/2022 12:47

Oh yeah - and tidying the lawn edging. My least favourite job Angry

@SockFluffInTheBath thank you! This is true.

These guys popped out over the weekend which is something to celebrate, at least!

SockFluffInTheBath · 21/03/2022 13:33

How lovely! I have the same colour and they’re absolutely gorgeous but no sign yet. Only one red one so far…

MrsBertBibby · 21/03/2022 13:51

Glorious!
