Plant ID please! Amazing scented climber?

Hello! Every day I walk past this climber growing over a sunny wall. It smells unbelievable- stops me in my tracks every time. Been flowering for the last month or so. The flowers are tiny, yellow/green clusters, see picture. The leaves are quite glossy, not sure if it’s evergreen or not.

I have no idea what it is or even what family it is but would love to track it down and get one for my garden! Any pointers please?

Those look very like jasmine flowers to me.

RealisticSketch · 30/05/2021 23:54

I don't know, but I know there are plant id websites that will tell you from photos like these cos my kids used them during schooling at home for their nature project school set them, I was impressed how good they were (though now can't remember name is site 🙈 probably not hard to find though)

AllOptionsAreOnTheTable · 30/05/2021 23:59

Could it be a Clematis similar to this?

Thank you! I tried various plant id websites and got many different answers…. But from doing a reverse image search I wonder if it may be a Stauntonia Hexaphylla? Which I have never heard of…

The RHS website says it's hardy in coastal and relatively mild areas of the UK to -5. Does that fit? I think you're right and have also never heard of it before.

Looks like jasmine. I have a plant id app called ‘picture this’, you take a photo of the plant and it tells you what it is and a bit about it. It’s brilliant and the DC love identifying wildflowers on walks now so it’s a good way to bribe them out of the house!

ErrolTheDragon · 31/05/2021 08:39

I think you've found it, OP, or something very like it. Sounds lovely!

Certainly not a jasmine, the leaves are nothing like and nor are the flowers really.

(References to plant ID apps on these threads seem to misidentify at least half the time, I'm sure they'll get better as their training sets expand and AI improves but currently they don't seem very reliable)

Watching. I love scented climbers!

MereDintofPandiculation · 31/05/2021 10:44

Those of you using plant apps - if you yourself don't know what the plant is, how do you know the plant app has identified it correctly?

ErrolTheDragon · 31/05/2021 11:18

Using them but sceptically, as the OP did, may be helpful, I suppose. But MN Gardening is better.Grin

Beebumble2 · 31/05/2021 12:07

The leaves and stamens in the centre of the flowers make me wonder if it’s a type of scented clematis.

ErrolTheDragon · 31/05/2021 12:32

The flowers do look quite like the clematis mentioned upthread but the leaves don't look quite right for that or any clematis I've come across.

Liv3 · 31/05/2021 12:32

My ‘Picture This’ app suggests it is a Stauntonia coriacea.

Cross reference with another app and Google.

I study Horticulture and it is recommended to use these app and cross reference if unsure

Beebumble2 · 31/05/2021 16:36

Got this photo of a clematis leaf from the web. Looks similar.

Beebumble2 · 31/05/2021 16:38

No photo, I’ll try again.

Beebumble2 · 31/05/2021 16:39

Phot won’t load! It’s a single leaf rather than the serrated one.

Beebumble2 · 31/05/2021 16:40

I’m going with Stauntonia . 😁

MattBerrysHair · 01/06/2021 22:26

Late to the thread but I think it may be a Holboellia coriacea.

minipie · 01/06/2021 22:45

Thank you! I can’t work out if Stauntonia and Holboellia are the same thing or not 🤯

ErrolTheDragon · 01/06/2021 23:28

Looking them up in Wikipedia, they're different genera in the same family, Lardizabalaceae. There's a name to conjure with!

Sausage vines! What a name. Think I'll stick to Stauntonia.

Will definitely have to check this one out, I love scented climbers.

AlwaysLatte · 01/06/2021 23:48

Is it a type of evergreen clematis armondii? It's quite like ours but the flowers are (only slightly) different.

AlwaysLatte · 01/06/2021 23:49

You walk past it every day though - knock and ask! Might even be lucky enough to be offered a cutting!

whatisheupto · 01/06/2021 23:51

I think it's an orange blossom.
