What’s happened to spring?!

I got a photo reminder on my phone of my garden this time last year and my garden was full of flowers and plants and blossom and bluebells. The clematis was in flower, peonies were in bloom, leaves on the trees.
This year, the exact same day, nothing! My trees have no leaves and not one of the above is past very early growth...
What is happening?! Has literally every plant/ tree died?! 😳

My garden is as you describe in your first paragraph so don’t know what’s gone wrong.

GirlCrush · 25/04/2021 21:30

mines like the first paragraph too

east mids here

SpringtimeSummertime · 25/04/2021 21:37

We’re north of the midlands and I can see tiny buds and very early growth typical of February but other than that, nothing... no leaves on the trees, no blossom. It’s very strange! The garden was in full bloom this time last year!

No rain.
I cannot remember the last time we had any rain here. My water butt is empty.

fairydustandpixies · 25/04/2021 21:40

My neighbour's apple tree is covered in gorgeous blossom. Mine just looks like a large twig stuck in the ground!

SpringtimeSummertime · 25/04/2021 21:47

I’ve just snipped a bit off the clematis (left) and maple tree (right) on the photo.
Tiny buds up each branch and at the tip.
Clematis has buds.
It’s like we’re a month behind!

What’s happened to spring?!

Haha!! Not sure what happened there wasn't meant to add the photo of the dress 😂😂

CarolinaWeeper · 25/04/2021 21:54

I think the weather has been really strange recently, the air has been so dry here (SE) I've been getting static shocks off the car door!

We moved house in the winter so are still trying to work out what things are in the garden. I've got a couple of large shurbs and small trees that I thought were dead until I inspected really closely and saw tiny buds on them so I think everything is just behind.

MildredPuppy · 25/04/2021 21:56

Its been so dry here. The last rain was a very late snow.

Iceniii · 25/04/2021 21:57

I think it is behind too. I've lost a fair few plants too such as bleeding hearts. They never showed. My other plants and trees are progressing but extremely slow.

SpringtimeSummertime · 25/04/2021 21:58

It is really strange! We have had no rain for ages which is very unusual. It’s also been hot some weeks and freezing cold frosts the next! I hope my garden hasn’t died! It was beautiful last year! I can see life in the maple and clematis at least!

Oh me too with the car! Is it because it's so dry?!
SpringtimeSummertime · 25/04/2021 22:03

Just looked at the fuschia. It’s a 1.5 m bush of dead crunchy twigs. 😭

It's dry, warm during the day, frost at night. Some plants have burned in the sun, some have frozen at night. We've lost many veg, but replanted, fingers crossed. S Yorkshire.

SpringtimeSummertime · 25/04/2021 22:06

Yes, the hedges have burned! I looked along the road earlier today and many people have the same problem with brown hedges.

Lack of rain and very cold frosty nights are holding everything back. Blossom only now showing on cherry tree in central Scotland

MilduraS · 25/04/2021 22:14

I'm a few hours south of you and my garden is struggling. The daffodils came up very slowly and didn't hang around for long. My snakehead fritillaries that have been multiplying for a few years amounted to one flower before giving up. My roses and acer have started to grow leaves but much later than normal. I'm not convinced my new peony grown from a bulb will try to flower at all.

I'm hoping that my summer bulbs will be more successful. I'm trying to grow flowers for cutting for the first time. At the moment I'm not really sure what to do to give the bulbs the best start so I've stuck with a deep water once a week and keeping my fingers crossed.

SpringtimeSummertime · 25/04/2021 22:16

Lockdown has given me time to (notice) watch the seasons properly for the first time ever dementedma.
I had no idea Spring is early some years and late the next. I have a lot to learn!

Here (sw) the blackthorn has flowered much earlier than last year. This time last year it was just in full bloom but this year they are fading.
I've not seen many bluebells yet, quite a few tulips, my peonies are still stems but they are only a few years old so probably not ready to flower yet.

Flaunch · 25/04/2021 22:17

My garden is a least 3 weeks behind where it was this time last year. It is very weird! I’m putting it down to lack of rain.

SpringtimeSummertime · 25/04/2021 22:20

It’s a shame isn’t it MilduraS.
Feb- May is usually a bit mad in our garden! Absolutely Beautiful but very full and lots of work! I’m not used to bare bordered, empty trees!
