I want to buy a rose plant to be delivered to my mum. Do you have any good ideas about websites that are reliable.

Crocus is a fantastic site with very healthy plants. If you are a rose though I would go direct to David Austin, their roses are amazing, proper old fashioned shape with amazing scents.

HasaDigaEebowai · 08/07/2020 06:26

Definitely David Austin.

Sami544 · 08/07/2020 06:26

thanks I will look there.

Yes David Austin are great. I've never had a dud rose from them.

Snog · 08/07/2020 06:29

I use David Austin

AngusThermopyle · 08/07/2020 06:29

Another's vote for David Austin from me.

We went to Alnwick castle gardens and the scent of this particular rose was alluring. It's called Chandos Beauty and comes in different sizes - standard, half standard and er..bush? Anyway, I tracked it down to a local nursery that has many branches (no pun) and does a good online business.

David Austin for Roses. His daughter, Claire, for peonies. Excellent.

FaceOfASpink · 08/07/2020 06:48

I have Chandos Beauty and absolutely love it but if I could only have 1 rose it would be Gertrude Jekyll.

Sami544 · 08/07/2020 06:50

thanks for all these. I love peonies as well so might take a look at that for myself.

Last autumn I bought some roses from David Austen specifically for cutting and perfume. I am so pleased with them, I know bought flowers are relatively cheap from the supermarket but having some of my home grown ones is much more enjoyable.

@Bluemoooon those are gorgeous. I'm due to move house soon and I'm going to try with some gardening.

My current house is just grass but this new home will be our forever home and I want some nice plants/bushes that are low maintenance.

Having a cut flowers bed/plant bought specifically for cutting is far more cost effective though (and far better for the environment). An investment in one plant can see you in cut flowers for many years. Ive just done my cut flowers seed order for next year and am about to start my rose garden area specifically for cutting.

I recent bought a rose from Peter Beales ( classicroses.co.uk ) and have been very pleased with it

I'm a rose novice though

MereDintofPandiculation · 08/07/2020 10:49

Just in case you hadn't thought about them, David Austin Grin

I don't know whether it's standard practice, but when I bought from Peter Beales, I ordered in May for autumn delivery, and they took the payment straight away rather than waiting until dispatch. I was not amused.

EBearhug · 08/07/2020 10:53

I recently had a couple of roses delivered from David Austin, having bought from them in the past as well. They come really well-packaged, and there's also a booklet about how to care for your roses. Both roses are now in the ground and seem to be settling in happily.

Their online search has good filters, which means you can choose roses by type, by size, by colour, if you want really scented ones (as I did) and so on. Even if you don't buy from them in the end, it's worth looking at their website to get a better idea of what you might want.

wowfudge · 08/07/2020 11:41

David Austin roses are excellent. Fryers are another rose specialist. If you buy from a specialist you should get quality and reliability.

BugPlaster · 08/07/2020 16:45

I was very happy with Tree 2 My Door, bought for a special birthday and it was a great success. I'll be looking for an opportunity to use them again.

Oldraver · 08/07/2020 18:54

@Mere I'd not thought of that. I was told delivery for my container rose would be 3-4 weeks (was 3) so didn't mind them taking the money straight away

pandora206 · 08/07/2020 20:27

Another vote for David Austin. I've two that I planted recently and they are blooming really well already. (Gertrude Jekyll and Olivia)

pickingdaisies · 09/07/2020 06:15

@Bluemoooon those are beautiful, which are they? Especially like the pink one.

Bluemoooon · 09/07/2020 06:22

Whiter Shade of Pale and the red one is Royal William

EBearhug · 09/07/2020 11:17

I was visiting somewhere last year and complimented them on the scent of their roses. They were Gertrude Jekyll. O considered GJ when I was buying recently, but got Eustacia Vye and Bathsheba Everdene instead, for a bit of a Hardy theme.

SuzieCarmichael · 09/07/2020 11:19

David Austin (!). I ordered a yellow rose as a wedding present for my parents and it arrived in beautiful condition.
