I want to buy a rose plant to be delivered to my mum. Do you have any good ideas about websites that are reliable.

David Austin every single time. I've bought at least 10 from them over the last two years for myself and others and they are brilliant.

Furries · 09/07/2020 17:13

Another for David Austin! Recently had delivered Olivia Rose Austin standards which I was really impressed with. Plus Gabriel Oak shrubs and Claire Austin climber - the scent from both of them is gorgeous.

BarbedBloom · 10/07/2020 23:04

Agree with David Austin. My Roald Dahl is beautiful, it arrived bare root but grew immediately.

Southwest12 · 11/07/2020 16:24

I'd say David Austin as well. One of the bare root roses I got from them just didn't grow. They replaced it free of charge the next year. I'd contacted them as they only had bare root roses in the colour I wanted and mentioned I didn't want bare root as the last one hadn't grown and they asked for a photo and then said pick a replacement. Fantastic customer service!

donkeyoatey · 11/07/2020 17:03

Gosh, you're all doing better with David Austin than me. I bought a bare root rambling rose from them in early March.
It now has black spot. I have emailed them and sent them photos, but they're refusing to replace it.
Really disappointed.

FaceOfASpink · 11/07/2020 19:15

I'm not surprised they're refusing to replace it really. It could easily have got black spot after you'd planted it so unless you can show that it arrived with black spot I think you're on very shaky ground.

donkeyoatey · 11/07/2020 20:15

It would be difficult to prove that it arrived with black spot, as it didn't have leaves when it arrived. No other roses in the flower bed have black spot. I'd only had it for 6 weeks when I first noticed the black spot on the leaves.

If you want a potted rose soon then lots of roses are out of stock on the David Austin site. I just bought Natasha Richardson from Harkness they have a really nice selection and my order arrived much, much more quickly and was packaged just as well as the David Austin roses I ordered last month.

longwayoff · 14/07/2020 09:32

The David Austin nursery, near Birmingham, is worth making a special visit to whether or not you want to buy a rose. They have a spectacular large garden, fully planted with their roses; stunning in summer when everything in bloom, the scent alone is worth the petrol. Decent cafe too. Lovely place. Great product.

WendyHoused · 14/07/2020 09:55

Another David Austin fan - every rose from them has been a belter.

Beales are pretty good, Fryers hit and miss.

GreyGardens88 · 14/07/2020 10:00

When is the best time of year to buy and plant a rose from David Austin in a container?

EBearhug · 14/07/2020 11:00

I think you can get container roses any time from them, but they'll only do bare-root roses at a suitable planting time. They have more detail about it on their website.

FaceOfASpink · 14/07/2020 11:48

Natasha Richardson was amazing in my garden for the first 2 years but smells of practically nothing this year.Sad

FaceOfASpink · 14/07/2020 11:50

She's got competition though. The jasmine, honeysuckle, lavender and 2 Gertrude Jekyll are giving it everything in that corner atm 😆

TwigTheWonderKid · 14/07/2020 15:57

@FaceOfASpink, that's a shame. I bought her as she is the perfect shade of pink to go in front of a massive lot of jasmine growing up a wall of my house so luckily fragrance is not so important for me.

FaceOfASpink · 14/07/2020 18:37

No it's me - not her! I'm 100% sure it's me not feeding etc. The blooms are still amazing. I think you made a good choice.

butterry · 14/07/2020 18:50

I have used David Austin before but just a couple days ago ordered from Plant drop as MIL wanted a Chandos Beauty rose and they were the only place online I could find it in stock- it’s more expensive as was one intended for show by the breeder at Chelsea Flower show but it’s gorgeous, well worth it.

Roseburn · 14/07/2020 21:24

Awaiting my Gertrude Jekyll arriving.

Bought off the back off this thread. Had been humming and hawing for ages, read the thread and went and did it.

Gertrude is to replace an old midewy zephirine drouhin I took out earlier this year. Similar colour and hopefully fragrance too - but more disease resistant.

WendyHoused · 14/07/2020 21:31

@Roseburn - my Gertrude has been a heavily scented joy. I hopr your delights you as much as mine pleases me.

longwayoff · 15/07/2020 08:34

This is a rare thing, nothing but praise for David Austin on this thread. Completely justified too.

Roseburn · 15/07/2020 13:44

Wendyhoused Im looking forward to getting to know her :)

Mamia15 · 15/07/2020 16:39

Wendyhoused - make sure you don't plant in the same spot where the old rose was. GJ is a great choice Wink

AnneKipanki · 15/07/2020 16:52

Agree there with GJ 👍🏻

Roseburn · 15/07/2020 17:37

Mamia15 It's going slightly off-spot but in the general same place ( further out from the wall because it's not a climber) I bought Mycorrhizal Fungi to help.

Westnorwood · 15/07/2020 17:47

I’ve bought five more DA roses during lockdown. Have a look at rightroses.com/ it will give you a review of most popular DA roses.
