Fast growing climbers

Can anyone recommend a fast growing climber for a full sun spot?
I have just had a pergola made for my garden and would like some ideas for quick growing/climbing plants.
The area gets pretty much full sun all day (S/W facing).
I'm a total garden novice and I have been known to kill a cactus so I need something quite low maintenance.
Thanks!

Russian vine. Beware though.

StillSmallVoice · 26/05/2020 21:59

Generally you are better to choose something you will love to live with rather than something that will just take over.

Wisteria grows fast but I think it can take a few years before it flowers. Lovely when it does though.

FrankiesKnuckle · 26/05/2020 22:14

Hmmm I'm impatient so now I've got this bare pergola when In my head it's got lovely, creeping green beams!
Would a clematis be ok? I like those.
I love wisteria but it's the impatience.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll do a little more research.

Clematis can be great in full sun as long as in moist, free draining soil. Lots of different varieties to choose from.
RHS Website have some good advice on plants suitable for different aspects.

Bluntness100 · 26/05/2020 22:22

Wisteria grows really really quickly, buy a decent sized one in flower and it’s fine, will cost about thirty quid.

I also have a clematis and my experience says wisteria grows much quicker.

EgremontRusset · 26/05/2020 22:23

You might want to think about evergreen or semi evergreen varieties. Our deciduous clematis looks dreadful in winter. We have star jasmine and honeysuckle in a similar sunny spot growing well. I’m trying a climb g rose too but it’s rather slow.

FrankiesKnuckle · 26/05/2020 22:23

Whatever I grow would have to be in pots. I should've said that initially sorry!
I have room for large tubs/pots so would a clematis still be ok?

Clematis. If you want year round interest winter ones are evergreen & fast growing. I have one that's on a south facing brick wall & it's so nice seeing the little cream flower in the winter & spring. They have pretty, fluffy seed heads too.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 26/05/2020 22:25

Yes, they're happy in a roomy tub.

Thanks!

Passion fruit plant. Mine grew really quickly and the flowers are really beautiful

Hagisonthehill · 26/05/2020 22:29

The potato vine grows really quickly as does jasmine either would do well in a big pot. There some nice ornamental vines to or go mad and grow some scarlet flowered runner beans or purple climbing French beans.

ThatsItNow · 26/05/2020 22:29

Hi OP,
We've recently put Clematis in a tall pot on one post of our pergola. It's growing very quickly and doing well. It needs a lot of watering especially in the summers and (I think) needs a minimum of 18" pot depth.
Good luck!

FrankiesKnuckle · 26/05/2020 22:32

Great, thanks!

You can buy enormous star jasmine in pots, then you won't have to wait at all. We'vej ust bough two which are 3.5m high already.

mineofuselessinformation · 26/05/2020 22:44

Choose a climber that you are prepared to wait for.
If you can, for the meantime, could you get hold of some sweet pea plants or similar?

WellTidy · 26/05/2020 22:44

Solanum is a vigorous climber and does brilliantly in full sun. Ours flowers for months and months (south east). You can get white and purple varieties.

WhenItIsOver · 26/05/2020 22:47

My neighbours have jasmine, it has taken a few years to grow to the top of a low trellis, not more than 3ft. And it really pongs. If you have sensitive nasal passages or sinus problems do not get jasmine, it is painful.

saveeno · 26/05/2020 22:53

Once passion flower gets going, there is no stopping it! Beautiful flowers and inedible fruits but very colourful.
Agree with all other suggestions apart from Russian vine lol.

Atalune · 26/05/2020 22:56

Don’t get Russian vine!!

FLOrenze · 27/05/2020 07:53

The rose Banksaei Lutea grows really quickly. It is scented and thornless so it is very easy to train. I would plant it with summer Jasmine. Buy the jasmine as tall as you can.

I've just posted on another thread and you can get some more nature climbers,

I bought one of those cheap plants from Morrison's last year and now it's probably about 6ft in some canes. It will go in the ground eventually

My clematis is doing well but my honeysuckle seems to be growing an inch a day! Not flowered yet though.

I can't wait to get a passion flower - beautiful blooms and I like the curly tendrils too!
